  • Annotating public fungal ITS sequences from the built environment according to the MIxS-Built Environment standard – a report from a May 23-24, 2016 workshop (Gothenburg, Sweden)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: MycoKeys. - : Pensoft Publishers. - 1314-4057 .- 1314-4049. ; 16, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent molecular studies have identified substantial fungal diversity in indoor environments. Fungi and fungal particles have been linked to a range of potentially unwanted effects in the built environment, including asthma, decay of building materials, and food spoilage. The study of the built mycobiome is hampered by a number of constraints, one of which is the poor state of the metadata annotation of fungal DNA sequences from the built environment in public databases. In order to enable precise interrogation of such data – for example, “retrieve all fungal sequences recovered from bathrooms” – a workshop was organized at the University of Gothenburg (May 23-24, 2016) to annotate public fungal barcode (ITS) sequences according to the MIxS-Built Environment annotation standard (http://gensc.org/mixs/). The 36 participants assembled a total of 45,488 data points from the published literature, including the addition of 8,430 instances of countries of collection from a total of 83 countries, 5,801 instances of building types, and 3,876 instances of surface-air contaminants. The results were implemented in the UNITE database for molecular identification of fungi (http://unite.ut.ee) and were shared with other online resources. Data obtained from human/animal pathogenic fungi will furthermore be verified on culture based metadata for subsequent inclusion in the ISHAM-ITS database (http://its.mycologylab.org).

  • Outdoor Environments at Three Nursing Homes: Semantic Environmental Descriptions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Housing for the Elderly. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0276-3893 .- 1540-353X. ; 29, s. 53-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research suggests that the outdoor environment is an important source of variety and change as well as health and well-being for nursing home residents. However, not every outdoor environment has the potential to be a positive resource in the life of older persons at nursing homes, and in this respect we need to study the particular design and content of the outdoor environment. The semantic environmental description (SMB) is a quantitatively based standardized tool intended to systematically describe an environment through assessments of 8 dimensions, namely: pleasantness, complexity, unity, enclosedness, potency, social status, affection, and originality. In this study the SMB was used to compare the outdoor environment of an imagined ideal nursing home and the outdoor environments of 3 existing nursing homes. Furthermore, assessments of an imagined ideal nursing home by pensioners and by nursing home staff were compared. The environment that was the closest to the ideal environment according to the assessments was a park-like environment that was larger and had more variation in vegetation than the other environments. The article concludes by discussing the SMB dimensions in relation to important environmental qualities in nursing home gardens.

  • After the Great Recession: Unions’ Views on Transnational Interests and Cooperation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies. - 2245-0157. ; 8:3, s. 111-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim is to describe and explain the similarities and differences between European trade unions concerning their views on transnational union interests and cooperation in the wake of the Great Recession. We do this by analyzing 221 responses from a European-wide web/postal survey distributed in 2015–2016 to union officials representing staff in employment sectors such as transport, metal and mining, construction, health care, and banking and finance. We find only limited sectoral differences, despite the varied impact of the Great Recession. The main findings are that unions in crisis-ridden southern European countries express a stronger orientation toward transnational union interests and cooperation. Unions in the northern and western European center express a weaker transnational orientation, in line with a renationalization strategy typically expressed in the form of national competitive corporative arrangements. This shows the importance of different institutional resources for unions across the various European industrial relations regimes.

  • Integrated Virtual Preparation and Commissioning: supporting formal methods during automation systems development
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IFAC-PapersOnLine. - : Elsevier BV. - 2405-8963. ; 49:12, s. 1939-1944
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Virtual commissioning – the development and validation of industrial control systems against a simulation model – is attracting interest in the automotive industry. The main motivation for its use is that control systems can start to be integrated and tested before the construction of the physical system. In addition to this, the ability to continuously test can lead to increased reliability and enables better coping with late changes. At the same time, using formal methods during production preparation and control system design promise similar benefits. Formal methods however, are not seeing the same surge in interest – they are rarely used in the automotive industry. In this paper a framework is proposed, Integrated Virtual Preparation and Commissioning, where virtual commissioning models are used as a base for preparation and control system implementation assisted by formal methods. The extensive use of simulation in virtual commissioning allows computation results from formal methods to be continuously validated by visual inspection and using existing analysis tools (e.g. collision detection methods). The framework is applied in a case study, where the combination of a simulation model and a formal model is used as an aid in generating operation sequences for validation during production preparation. The resulting formal model can be used to study the behavior of the production system before a control system has been implemented.

  • Sequence Planner: Supporting Integrated Virtual Preparation and Commissioning
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IFAC-PapersOnLine. - : Elsevier BV. - 2405-8963. ; 50:1, s. 5818-5823
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is essential to understand the operation sequences of a production system when designing or changing it. This paper will demonstrate how the software tool Sequence Planner (SP) not only supports this understanding by sequence visualization, but also improves the solution using optimization and verification. SP is a tool for modeling and analyzing automation systems. The tool has been developed since 2007 with an initial focus on supporting engineers when developing control code for programmable logical controllers. Today, SP is a micro-service architecture, usable in various areas like runtime control, online monitoring, energy optimization, and even emergency department patient planning. This paper presents a use case at an automotive company, where the operation sequences in a large number of automated robot stations, need to be modified. SP, together with virtual commissioning tools, automates this modification by identifying, optimizing, verifying and simulating operation sequences, and then updates the robot and control programs. This use case demonstrates the strength of SP and its architecture and how it is used for integrated virtual preparation and commissioning.

  • Biocompatibility of a polymer based on Off-Stoichiometry Thiol-Enes + Epoxy (OSTE+) for neural implants.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2055-7124. ; 19:19, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The flexibility of implantable neural probes has increased during the last 10 years, starting with stiff materials such as silicone to more flexible materials like polyimide. We have developed a novel polymer based on Off-Stoichiometry Thiol-Enes + Epoxy (OSTE+, consisting of a thiol, two allyls, an epoxy resin and two initiators), which is up to 100 times more flexible than polyimide. Since a flexible neural probe should be more biocompatible than a stiff probe, an OSTE+ probe should be more biocompatible than one composed of a more rigid material. We have investigated the toxicity of OSTE+ as well as of OSTE+ that had been incubated in water for a week (OSTE+H2O) using MTT assays with mouse L929 fibroblasts. We found that OSTE+ showed cytotoxicity, but OSTE+H2O did not. Extracts were analyzed using LC-MS and GC-MS in order to identify leaked chemicals.

  • A Shield against Distraction from Environmental Noise
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Working in noisy environments can be detrimental to cognitive performance. In order to perform well people have to find a way to attenuate distraction. This thesis aimed to study the balance between distractibility and task demands in the context of office-related tasks as a means by which to better understand how people in the work environment are influenced by environmental noise. In Report 1, 2 and 3 higher focal-task difficulty was achieved by manipulating the readability of the text that participants were asked to read (i.e. either displaying the text in hard-to-read font or by masking it with static visual noise). The results of Report 1 and Report 2 showed that background speech impaired performance on proofreading and memory for written stories respectively compared to silence, but only when the focaltask difficulty was low, not when it was high.In Report 3 it was shown that background speech, road traffic noise, and aircraft noise impaired performance on text memory compared to silence, but again, only when focal-task difficulty was low.In Report 4 it was tested whether higher cognitive load on the focal task would reduce peripheral processing of a to-be-ignored background story. The results of Report 4 showed that participants in the low-load condition recalled more of the information conveyed in the to-be-ignored background story compared to participants in the high-load condition. It was also investigated whether individual differences in working memory capacity (WMC) would influence participants’ memory for written stories (Report 2) and incidental memory of the to-background story (Report 4) differently depending on task demand. The results showed that individuals scoring high on the WMC-test were less distracted by background speech in the easy-to-read font condition (Report 2), and recalled less of the information in the to-be-ignored background story in the low-cognitive load condition (Report 4) compared to individuals that scored lower on the WMC-test. These relationships were not found in the hard-to-read font condition in Report 2, or in the high-cognitive load condition in Report 4. Taken together, these results indicate that higher focal-task difficulty can shield against the detrimental effect environmental noise on performance on office-related tasks. Moreover, it shows that higher focal-task difficulty can help individuals with low-WMC to reach a level of performance that is similar to that of high-capacity individuals.

  • Simulation of bright-field microscopy images depicting pap-smear specimen
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Cytometry Part A. - : Wiley. - 1552-4922 .- 1552-4930. ; 87:3, s. 212-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As digital imaging is becoming a fundamental part of medical and biomedical research, the demand for computer-based evaluation using advanced image analysis is becoming an integral part of many research projects. A common problem when developing new image analysis algorithms is the need of large datasets with ground truth on which the algorithms can be tested and optimized. Generating such datasets is often tedious and introduces subjectivity and interindividual and intraindividual variations. An alternative to manually created ground-truth data is to generate synthetic images where the ground truth is known. The challenge then is to make the images sufficiently similar to the real ones to be useful in algorithm development. One of the first and most widely studied medical image analysis tasks is to automate screening for cervical cancer through Pap-smear analysis. As part of an effort to develop a new generation cervical cancer screening system, we have developed a framework for the creation of realistic synthetic bright-field microscopy images that can be used for algorithm development and benchmarking. The resulting framework has been assessed through a visual evaluation by experts with extensive experience of Pap-smear images. The results show that images produced using our described methods are realistic enough to be mistaken for real microscopy images. The developed simulation framework is very flexible and can be modified to mimic many other types of bright-field microscopy images.
