  • Selected recent results from AMANDA
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: ICHEP 2000. Proceedings of the 30th International Conference on High Energy Physics. - : World Scientific. ; , s. 965-968
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a selection of results based on data taken in 1997 with the 302-PMT Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array-B10 ("AMANDA-B10") array. Atmospheric neutrinos created in the northern hemisphere are observed indirectly through their charged current interactions which produce relativistic, Cherenkov-light-emitting upgoing muons in the South Pole ice cap. The reconstructed angular distribution of these events is in good agreement with expectation and demonstrates the viability of this ice-based device as a neutrino telescope. Studies of nearly vertical upgoing muons limit the available parameter space for WIMP dark matter under the assumption that WIMPS are trapped in the earth's gravitational potential well and annihilate with one another near the earth's center.

  • Observation of high energy atmospheric neutrinos with AMANDA
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). ; , s. 823-827
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 1997 the Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) started operating with 10 strings. In an analysis of data taken during the first year of operation 188 atmospheric neutrino candidates were found. Their zenith angle distribution agrees with expectations based on Monte Carlo simulations. A preliminary upper limit is given on a diffuse flux of high energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

  • Physical therapy and imaging outcome measures in a haemophilia population treated with factor prophylaxis: current status and future directions
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Haemophilia. - : Wiley. - 1351-8216 .- 1365-2516. ; 10, s. 88-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Routine infusions of factor VIII to prevent bleeding, known as prophylaxis, and other intensive therapies are being more broadly applied to patients with haemophilia. These therapies differ widely in replacement product usage, cost, frequency of venous access and parental effort. In order to address residual issues relating to recommendations, implementation, and evaluations of prophylaxis therapy in persons with haemophila, a multinational working group was formed and called the International Prophylaxis Study Group (IPSG). The group was comprised of haemophilia treaters actively involved in studies of prophylaxis from North America and Europe. Two expert committees, the Physical Therapy (PT) Working Group and the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Working Group were organized to critically assess existing tools for assessment of Joint outcome. These two committees independently concluded that the WFH Physical Examination Scale (WFH PE Scale) and the WFH X-ray Scale (WFH XR Scale) were inadequately sensitive to detect early changes in Joints. New scales were developed based on suggested modifications of the existing scales and called the Haemophilia joint Health Score (HJHS) and the International MRI Scales. The new scales were piloted. Concordance was measured by the intra-class correlation coefficient of variation. Reliability of the HJHS was excellent with an inter-observer co-efficient of 0.83 and a test-retest value of 0.89. The MRI study was conducted using both Denver and European scoring approaches; inter-reader reliability using the two approaches was 0.88 and 0.87; test-retest reliability was 0.92 and 0.93. These new PT and MRI scales promise to improve outcome assessment in children on early preventive treatment regimens.

  • Friction measurement on cycleways using a portable friction tester
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of cold regions engineering. - 0887-381X .- 1943-5495. ; 17:1, s. 37-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In seeking to promote cycling in wintertime, it is desirable to understand how important the winter maintenance service level is in people's decision to cycle or not,, and methods to compare different road conditions on cycleways are therefore needed. By measuring friction, an assessment of the service level can be achieved, but methods available often involve the use of large vehicles, which can lead to overloading damage on cycleways, and constitute a safety risk for cyclists and pedestrians. A portable friction tester (PFT), originally designed to measure friction on road markings, was thought to be an appropriate instrument for cycleways and was, therefore, tested on different winter road conditions, and on different cycleway pavement materials. In this study, it was found that the PFT is a valuable tool for measuring friction on cycleways. Different winter road conditions, as well as different pavement materials, can be distinguished from each other through PFT measurements. The PFT provides a good complement to visual inspections of cycleways in. winter maintenance evaluation and can, for example, be used to determine if desired service levels have been achieved.
