  • Note : Soft X-ray transmission polarizer based on ferromagnetic thin films
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : American Institute of Physics Inc.. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 89:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A transmission polarizer for producing elliptically polarized soft X-ray radiation from linearly polarized light is presented. The setup is intended for use at synchrotron and free-electron laser beamlines that do not directly offer circularly polarized light for, e.g., X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements or holographic imaging. Here, we investigate the degree of ellipticity upon transmission of linearly polarized radiation through a cobalt thin film. The experiment was performed at a photon energy resonant to the Co L3-edge, i.e., 778 eV, and the polarization of the transmitted radiation was determined using a polarization analyzer that measures the directional dependence of photo electrons emitted from a gas target. Elliptically polarized radiation can be created at any absorption edge showing the XMCD effect by using the respective magnetic element.

  • Indirect excitation of ultrafast demagnetization.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Does the excitation of ultrafast magnetization require direct interaction between the photons of the optical pump pulse and the magnetic layer? Here, we demonstrate unambiguously that this is not the case. For this we have studied the magnetization dynamics of a ferromagnetic cobalt/palladium multilayer capped by an IR-opaque aluminum layer. Upon excitation with an intense femtosecond-short IR laser pulse, the film exhibits the classical ultrafast demagnetization phenomenon although only a negligible number of IR photons penetrate the aluminum layer. In comparison with an uncapped cobalt/palladium reference film, the initial demagnetization of the capped film occurs with a delayed onset and at a slower rate. Both observations are qualitatively in line with energy transport from the aluminum layer into the underlying magnetic film by the excited, hot electrons of the aluminum film. Our data thus confirm recent theoretical predictions.

  • Employing soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering to study domain sizes and anisotropy in Co/Pd multilayers
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 94:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is demonstrated that themagnetic diffraction pattern of the isotropic disorderedmaze pattern is well described utilizing a gamma distribution of domain sizes in a one-dimensional model. From the analysis, the mean domain size and the shape parameter of the distribution are obtained. The model reveals an average domain size that is significantly different from the value that is determined from the peak position of the structure factor in reciprocal space. As a proof of principle, a wedge-shaped (Co-t angstrom/Pd-10 angstrom) 8 multilayer film, that covers the thickness range of the spin-reorientation transition, has been used. By means of soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) and imaging techniques the thickness-driven evolution of the magnetic properties of the cobalt layers is explored. It is shown that minute changes of the domain pattern concerning domain size and geometry can be investigated and analyzed due to the high sensitivity and lateral resolution of the XRMS technique. The latter allows for the determination of the magnetic anisotropies of the cobalt layers within a thickness range of a few angstroms.

  • Spatial coherence determination from the Fourier analysis of a resonant soft X-ray magnetic speckle pattern
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optical Society of America. - 1094-4087. ; 24:20, s. 23162-23176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a method to determine the two-dimensional spatial coherence of synchrotron radiation in the soft X-ray regime by analyzing the Fourier transform of the magnetic speckle pattern from a ferromagnetic film in a multidomain state. To corroborate the results, a Young's double-pinhole experiment has been performed. The transverse coherence lengths in vertical and horizontal direction of both approaches are in a good agreement. The method presented here is simple and gives a direct access to the coherence properties of synchrotron radiation without nanostructured test objects.

  • Crystal electric field splitting and f -electron hybridization in heavy-fermion CePt2In7
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 100:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the electronic structure of the antiferromagnetic heavy fermion compound CePt2In7, which is a member of the CeIn3-derived heavy fermion material family. Weak hybridization among 4f electron states and conduction bands was identified in CePt2In7 at low temperature much weaker than that in the other heavy fermion compounds like CeIrIn5 and CeRhIn5. The Ce 4f spectrum shows fine structures near the Fermi energy, reflecting the crystal electric field splitting of the 4f5/21 and 4f7/21 states. Also, we find that the Fermi surface has a strongly three-dimensional topology, in agreement with density-functional theory calculations.  © 2019 American Physical Society.

  • Electron scattering, charge order, and pseudogap physics in La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 : An angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 92:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report an angle-resolved photoemission study of the charge stripe ordered La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 (Nd-LSCO) system. A comparative and quantitative line-shape analysis is presented as the system evolves from the overdoped regime into the charge ordered phase. On the overdoped side (x = 0.20), a normal-state antinodal spectral gap opens upon cooling below 80 K. In this process, spectral weight is preserved but redistributed to larger energies. A correlation between this spectral gap and electron scattering is found. A different line shape is observed in the antinodal region of charge ordered Nd-LSCO x = 1/8. Significant low-energy spectral weight appears to be lost. These observations are discussed in terms of spectral-weight redistribution and gapping originating from charge stripe ordering.

  • Does Pretreatment Tumor Growth Hold Prognostic Information for Patients with Glioblastoma?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: World neurosurgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-8769 .- 1878-8750. ; 101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Glioblastomas are highly aggressive and heterogeneous tumors, both in terms of patient outcome and molecular profile. Magnetic resonance imaging of tumor growth could potentially reveal new insights about tumor biology noninvasively. The aim of this exploratory retrospective study was to investigate the prognostic potential of pretreatment growth rate of glioblastomas, after controlling for known prognostic factors.A growth model derived from clinical pretreatment postcontrast T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging images was used to divide 106 glioblastoma patients into 2 groups. The "faster growth" group had tumors growing faster than expected based on their volume at diagnosis, whereas the "slower growth" group had tumors growing slower than expected. Associations between tumor growth and survival were examined by the use of multivariable Cox regression and logistic regression.None of the known prognostic factors were significantly associated with tumor growth. An extended multivariable Cox model showed that during the first 12 months of follow-up, there was no significant difference in survival between faster and slower growing tumors. Beyond 12 months' follow-up, however, there was a significant, independent survival benefit in having a tumor with slower pretreatment growth. In a multiple logistic regression model including patients receiving both radiotherapy and chemotherapy (n= 82), slower pre-treatment growth of the tumor was shown to be a significant predictor of 2-year survival (odds ratio 4.4).Pretreatment glioblastoma growth harbors prognostic information. Patients with slower growing tumors have higher odds of survival beyond 2 years, adjusted for other prognostic factors.
