  • 17.25% high efficiency ternary solar cells with increased open-circuit voltage using a high HOMO level small molecule guest donor in a PM6:Y6 blend
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2050-7496 .- 2050-7488. ; 9:36, s. 20493-20501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A small molecule donor TiC12 with an asymmetric thieno[3,2-c]isochromene unit is incorporated into the PM6:Y6 system as the third component for constructing ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). It was found that TiC12 played an outstanding role in improvement of open-circuit voltage (V-oc), short-circuit current (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF) for the OSCs. The effects of TiC12 on the absorption, exciton dissociation, charge extraction, bimolecular recombination and morphology of the active layer are analyzed in detail. The synergetic improvement of J(sc), V-oc and FF parameters is realized to generate an advanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.25% in the optimized PM6 : TiC12 : Y6 (0.9 : 0.1 : 1.2) ternary device. Furthermore, the V-oc is increased in proportion to the added amount of TiC12 in the ternary devices due to reduced disorder and nonradiative energy loss, although the guest donor TiC12 exhibited a higher HOMO level than PM6. This study provides an effective and innovative approach to elevate V-oc and thus PCE for ternary OSCs by introducing a guest small molecule donor with a higher HOMO level and better miscibility with the acceptor.

  • Low-bandgap nonfullerene acceptor based on thieno[3,2-b]indole core for highly efficient binary and ternary organic solar cells
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A low-bandgap nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) TIT-2FIC based on thieno[3,2-b]indole-thiophenes core has been developed. Compared with the analogue NFAs DTC(4Ph)-4FIC and IT-4F, TIT-2FIC exhibited remarkably red-shifted absorption, and up-shifted HOMO energy level. In addition, TIT-2FIC showed interesting universal miscibility with the donors nonfluorinated PBDB-T and fluorinated PM6, therefore the corresponding organic solar cells achieved promising power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 11.80% and 13.00%, respectively, which are higher compared to the counterpart IT-4F based cells. Furthermore, the ternary PM6:TIT-2FIC:Y6 cell pronounced a high PCE of 17.22%, being significantly improved from that of 16.04% for the binary PM6:Y6 cell. Similar improvement in PCEs from 13.41% to 14.46% was also observed in the ternary PM6:TIT-2FIC:IT-4F cell with TIT-2FIC as the third component. These results indicated that TIT-2FIC is universally applicable as an acceptor with nonfluorinated or fluorinated polymer donor materials in both binary and ternary cells.

  • Progress of the key materials for organic solar cells
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science in China Series B. - Beijing, China : SCIENCE PRESS. - 1674-7291 .- 1869-1870. ; 63:6, s. 758-765
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organic solar cells have attracted academic and industrial interests due to the advantages like lightweight, flexibility and roll-to-roll fabrication. Nowadays, 18% power conversion efficiency has been achieved in the state-of-the-art organic solar cells. The recent rapid progress in organic solar cells relies on the continuously emerging new materials and device fabrication technologies, and the deep understanding on film morphology, molecular packing and device physics. Donor and acceptor materials are the key materials for organic solar cells since they determine the device performance. The past 25 years have witnessed an odyssey in developing high-performance donors and acceptors. In this review, we focus on those star materials and milestone work, and introduce the molecular structure evolution of key materials. These key materials include homopolymer donors, D-A copolymer donors, A-D-A small molecular donors, fullerene acceptors and nonfullerene acceptors. At last, we outlook the challenges and very important directions in key materials development.

  • Efficient Charge Transport Enables High Efficiency in Dilute Donor Organic Solar Cells
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society. - 1948-7185. ; 12:20, s. 5039-5044
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The donor/acceptor weight ratio is crucial for photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, we systematically investigate the photovoltaic behaviors of PM6:Y6 solar cells with different stoichiometries. It is found that the photovoltaic performance is tolerant to PM6 contents ranging from 10 to 60 wt %. Especially an impressive efficiency over 10% has been achieved in dilute donor solar cells with 10 wt % PM6 enabled by efficient charge generation, electron/ hole transport, slow charge recombination, and field-insensitive extraction. This raises the question about the origin of efficient hole transport in such dilute donor structure. By investigating hole mobilities of PM6 diluted in Y6 and insulators, we find that effective hole transport pathway is mainly through PM6 phase in PM6:Y6 blends despite with low PM6 content. The results indicate that a low fraction of polymer donors combines with near-infrared nonfullerene acceptors could achieve high photovoltaic performance, which might be a candidate for semitransparent windows.

  • Neutron tagging following atmospheric neutrino events in a water Cherenkov detector
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 1748-0221. ; 17:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. The fitted neutron capture lifetime was measured as 218 +/- 9 mu s.

  • Genome-wide association study of intracranial aneurysms identifies 17 risk loci and genetic overlap with clinical risk factors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 52:12, s. 1303-1313
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rupture of an intracranial aneurysm leads to subarachnoid hemorrhage, a severe type of stroke. To discover new risk loci and the genetic architecture of intracranial aneurysms, we performed a cross-ancestry, genome-wide association study in 10,754 cases and 306,882 controls of European and East Asian ancestry. We discovered 17 risk loci, 11 of which are new. We reveal a polygenic architecture and explain over half of the disease heritability. We show a high genetic correlation between ruptured and unruptured intracranial aneurysms. We also find a suggestive role for endothelial cells by using gene mapping and heritability enrichment. Drug-target enrichment shows pleiotropy between intracranial aneurysms and antiepileptic and sex hormone drugs, providing insights into intracranial aneurysm pathophysiology. Finally, genetic risks for smoking and high blood pressure, the two main clinical risk factors, play important roles in intracranial aneurysm risk, and drive most of the genetic correlation between intracranial aneurysms and other cerebrovascular traits. Cross-ancestry genome-wide association analyses in individuals of European and East Asian ancestry identify 11 new risk loci for intracranial aneurysms and highlight a polygenic architecture explaining a substantial fraction of disease heritability.

  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • CFD Study of Molten Pool Convection in a Reactor Vessel during a Severe Accident
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During severe accidents in nuclear reactors, the core and internal structures can melt down and relocate into the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) lower head (LH) forming there a stratified molten corium pool. The pool generally consists of superheated oxidic and metallic liquid layers imposing thermo-mechanical loads on the RPV wall. The in-vessel retention (IVR) strategy employs external cooling with water to maintain RPV integrity. Investigating the thermo-fluid behaviour of corium and predicting heat flux distribution on the vessel wall are crucial. The molten pool exhibits natural convection, which can typically consist of two stratified layers. There exists internally heated (IH) natural convection in the oxidic layer and Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection in the surface metallic layer. This study starts by illustrating the mathematical models that involve the numerical study of natural convection flow in molten corium. A verification work of the model has been done using a previous direct numerical simulation (DNS) study, and the results show good agreement. In addition, a scaling theory of the natural convection flow is demonstrated to facilitate the pre-estimation based on the Rayleigh number (Ra) and Prandtl number (Pr). After that, the numerical approaches involved in the numerical simulation of the corium are illustrated, especially focusing on the DNS method. A DNS mesh strategy is proposed in the form of a pipeline from the pre-estimation to the post-check. A scalability study of Nek5000 is performed on four different HPC clusters based on a DNS case of the IH molten convection in a hemispherical geometry with Ra=1.6×1011. The results show a super-liner speedup property of Nek5000 on each cluster within a certain range. Then, three numerical studies focusing on turbulent natural convection flow within both the oxidic and metallic layers of corium are demonstrated and discussed. Through these simulations, the thermos-fluid behaviour of the system is examined in detail, including flow configuration, temperature distribution, heat flux profiles on cooling boundaries, and turbulent quantities.1. A DNS investigation is performed on the IH molten pool convection within a hemispherical domain, employing a Rayleigh number of 1.6×1011 and a Prandtl number of 0.5. The results show a turbulent flow characterized by three distinct regions, consistent with the observation from the BALI experiments. Detailed information regarding turbulence, including turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), turbulent heat flux (THF), and temperature variance, is presented. Furthermore, the study offers comprehensive 3D heat flux distributions along the boundaries, showing heat flux fluctuations along the top boundary due to nearby turbulent eddies and a nonlinear increase in heat flux along the curved boundary from bottom to top.2. A numerical study investigates the effect of Prandtl number on the natural convection of an IH molten pool in a 3D semi-circular test section. Prandtl numbers of 3.11, 1.0, and 0.5 are considered, with a Ra= 6.54×1011. Smaller Prandtl numbers result in more vigorous turbulent motion and a thicker layer of intense turbulent mixing in the upper region. The descending flow extends further down the bottom, creating a stronger circulation at the bottom with smaller Pr. Additionally, smaller Pr leads to more thermal stripping structures and less stable stratification layers. Comparing heat fluxes on the top and curved walls reveals higher fluctuation frequency with smaller Pr for heat fluxes to the top boundary. However, the maximum heat fluxes to the side walls are lower with smaller Pr.3. A numerical study investigates the turbulent natural convection in a 3D fluid layer based on the BALI-Metal 8U experiment. Different methods, including DNS and three Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models, are employed. The results are compared with experimental data, and the performance of the RANS models is evaluated using DNS as a reference. DNS reproduces a two-distinct region flow structure observed in experiments, while the k-ω SST model exhibits similar flow patterns and TKE profiles. However, all simulations overpredict temperature compared to experimental data, with DNS providing the closest results. The DNS results also achieve better agreement with experimental data in terms of heat flux distribution and energy balance, specifically capturing the transient maximum heat flux on the lateral cooling wall. This transient behaviour plays a crucial role in accurately estimating the ‘focusing effect’.
