  • Nature in Roman Catholic tradition
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Anthropological Quarterly. ; 74:1, s. 15-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is often suggested in contemporary anthropology that Western views of nature are fundamentally different from those in so called “societies of nature”, supposed to conceptualise the environment in non-dualistic terms. This article calls in question this opinion by discussing in some detail three different views on nature in Roman Catholic tradition. Firmly rooted in a dualistic worldview, although not as rigid as sometimes assumed, this tradition conceptually separates nature, humankind and the divine. However, many features assumed to characterise non-Western views of nature, such as animistic beliefs and imageries of communion with nature, form an integral part of scholarly Roman Catholic thought as well as of popular religious practices. Roman Catholic tradition emerges as a dynamic tradition of ideas which allows the relationships between nature and other domains to be construed in diverse ways.

  • Risk discourse: The rhetoric of railway hazards in siting controversy
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Foresight and Precaution (Proceedings of ESREL 2000, SARS and SRA-Europe Annual Conference), eds.: Cottam, M.P., Harvey, D.W., Pape, R.P. & Tait, J.. - 9058091422 ; 2, s. 1061-1066
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the role of risk arguments in controversies in seven Swedish communities affected by the rebuilding of the West Coast Railway. A media analysis suggests that risk was not a major issue in the first stage of the controversies, when local opposition focused on the immediate physical effects of the rebuilding of the railway line. With time risk topics became increasingly salient in media and the public debate. Results from a telephone survey indicate, however, that concerns over hazards related to the recon-struction or the future train traffic were not particularly widespread in local opinion. A process of schismogenesis, outlined in an information flow model that takes into account the positions of stakeholders and the use of rhetoric in the public arena, is proposed as explanation for part of the amplification of risk in the local controversies

  • Schismogenesis in a Swedish case of railway planning
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Facility Siting: Risk, Power and Identity in Land Use Planning / Boholm, Åsa, Löfstedt, Ragnar. - London : Earthscan. - 1844071464 ; , s. 160-176
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The modernisation of the west-coast trunk line, approved by the Swedish government in the late 1980s, is the most substantial railway project in Sweden since the railway boom at the end of the nineteenth century. This investment, originally projected to cost SEK 40 billion (approx. 4.4 billion Euro), is part of an ambitious plan to modernise Swedish infrastructure to meet the needs of the twenty-first century in terms of efficiency and environmental sustainability. As to the more specific plans for rebuilding and relocating particular sections of the railway, there have been serious reservations, even fierce opposition, in communities along the proposed route. We take a close look at the debate concerning the West Coast Railway, as it has occurred in towns along the route, to discern features of the rhetorical logic of argumentation and also of its social nature as a process of discordant communication. In this, Gregory Bateson?s concept of schismogenesis will be used as an analytical tool.
