  • EuPA achieves visibility – an activity report on the first three years
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Proteomics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1874-3919. ; 30:71, s. 11-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedPlans for the European Proteomics Association (EuPA) were conceived and established during 2004 and 2005, and culminated in the formal inception of the Organisation during the 4th HUPO World Congress held in Munich in 2005. The mission from the outset has been three-tiered and is to: i) strengthen the national Proteomics organizations in their efforts; ii) to co-ordinate and provide educational programs, and iii) to advance the networking of scientists through meetings, workshops and student exchange. Linked to the mission were objectives to emphasise the benefits and contributions of Proteomics to biological and industrial researchers, the general public and science policy makers in Europe. in addition, the EuPA set out to promote scientific exchange for all applications and technology development related to Proteomics, and coordinate joint activities of national Proteomics societies at the European level. To achieve these tasks an organisational. structure was conceived whereby four Activity Committees (Conferences/Communications, Education, EuPA-HUPO-Interactions and Funding) were implemented and a General Council consisting of all member countries. The remarkable rise and progress the EuPA has achieved in this small time frame is reported here.

  • Measurement and simulation of the neutron response and detection efficiency of a Pb-scintillating fiber calorimeter
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499 .- 1558-1578. ; 55:3, s. 1409-1412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have measured the overall detection efficiency to neutrons of a small prototype of the KLOE Pb-scintillating fiber calorimeter in the kinetic energy range [5,175] MeV. using the neutron beam facility of The Svedberg Laboratory, TSL, Uppsala. The measurement of the neutron detection efficiency of a NE110 scintillator provided a reference calibration. At the lowest trigger threshold, the overall calorimeter efficiency ranges from 28% to 33%. This value largely exceeds the estimated similar to 8% expected if the response were proportional only to the scintillator equivalent thickness. A detailed simulation of the calorimeter and of the TSL beamline has been performed with the FLUKA Monte Carlo code. The simulated response of the detector to neutrons is presented together with first data to Monte Carlo comparison. The results show an overall neutron efficiency of about 35%. The reasons for such an efficiency enhancement, in comparison with the typical scintillator-based neutron counters, are explained, opening the road to a novel neutron detector.

A detailed simulation of the calorimeter and of the TSL beam line has been performed with the FLUKA Monte Carlo code. First data-MC comparisons are encouraging and allow to disentangle a neutron halo component in the beam.

  • Measurement of the detection efficiency of the KLOE calorimeter for neutrons between 22 and 174 MeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 598:1, s. 244-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A prototype of the high-sampling lead-scintillating fiber KLOE calorimeter has been exposed to neutron beams of 21, 46 and 174 MeV, provided by the The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala, to test its neutron detection efficiency. The measurement of the neutron detection efficiency of an NE110 scintillator provided a reference calibration. The measured efficiency is larger than what expected considering the scintillator thickness of the KLOE prototype only. This result proves the existence of a contribution from the passive material to neutron detection efficiency, in a high-sampling calorimeter configuration.

  • Retrovirus-like long-terminal repeat DQ-LTR13 and genetic susceptibility to type 1 diabetes and autoimmune Addison's disease
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Diabetes. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0012-1797 .- 1939-327X. ; 54:3, s. 900-905
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Controversial data are available on the association between the retrovirus-like long-terminal repeat (LTR) DQ-LTR13 and genetic susceptibility to type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. We analyzed DNA samples from 315 type 1 diabetic patients, 166 autoimmune Addison’s disease (AAD) patients, 1,054 healthy subjects, and 144 families of type 1 diabetic offspring. DQ-LTR13 was more frequent among patients than healthy subjects (Pc < 0.0006), and a preferential transmission of DQB1*0302-LTR13+ from parents to type 1 diabetic offspring was observed. DQ-LTR13 was in linkage disequilibrium (LD) with DQB1*0302 but not DQB1*0201. The presence of DQ-LTR13 increased the odds ratio of DQB1*0302 2.9- to 3.2-fold for type 1 diabetes and AAD. DRB1*0403 was absent in all of the 169 DRB1*04-positive patients but present in 27% (34 of 127) DRB1*04-positive healthy subjects (Pc < 0.001). DQ-LTR13 was detected in 1 of 34 (3%) DRB1*0403-positive healthy subjects and 36 of 93 (39%) individuals carrying another DRB1*04 allele (Pc = 0.002). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that DQ-LTR13 is not independently associated with type 1 diabetes and AAD after correction for DQB1*0302 and DRB1*0403. Conversely, DQB1*0201, DQB1*0302, DRB1*0401, and DRB1*0403 were all significantly associated with disease risk also after correction for DQ-LTR13. We provide conclusive evidence that the genetic association of DQ-LTR13 with type 1 diabetes and AAD is primarily due to a LD with DQB1*0302 and DRB1*0403.
