  • TRY plant trait database - enhanced coverage and open access
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Global Change Biology. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1354-1013 .- 1365-2486. ; 26:1, s. 119-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives.

  • Testing the Effect of Relative Pollen Productivity on the REVEALS Model : A Validated Reconstruction of Europe-Wide Holocene Vegetation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Land. - : MDPI. - 2073-445X. ; 12:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reliable quantitative vegetation reconstructions for Europe during the Holocene are crucial to improving our understanding of landscape dynamics, making it possible to assess the past effects of environmental variables and land-use change on ecosystems and biodiversity, and mitigating their effects in the future. We present here the most spatially extensive and temporally continuous pollen-based reconstructions of plant cover in Europe (at a spatial resolution of 1 degrees x 1 degrees) over the Holocene (last 11.7 ka BP) using the 'Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites' (REVEALS) model. This study has three main aims. First, to present the most accurate and reliable generation of REVEALS reconstructions across Europe so far. This has been achieved by including a larger number of pollen records compared to former analyses, in particular from the Mediterranean area. Second, to discuss methodological issues in the quantification of past land cover by using alternative datasets of relative pollen productivities (RPPs), one of the key input parameters of REVEALS, to test model sensitivity. Finally, to validate our reconstructions with the global forest change dataset. The results suggest that the RPPs.st1 (31 taxa) dataset is best suited to producing regional vegetation cover estimates for Europe. These reconstructions offer a long-term perspective providing unique possibilities to explore spatial-temporal changes in past land cover and biodiversity.

  • "Må de herrskande klasserna darra" : Radikal retorik och reaktion i Stockholms press, 1848-1851
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation explores the formation of the modern historiography of class in mid-nineteenth century Sweden by analyzing constitutive rhetoric of class in the Stockholm press from 1848 to 1851. The aim is to study how disparaged workers during the February Revolution in France began to be ascribed a new kind of unified agency, and how workers in Stockholm became recipients of mobilizing appeals from all parts of the political spectrum. To this end the dissertation examines periodical papers representing the three major political positions of the period, i.e. a royalist conservative press, liberal papers in opposition, and a newly emerging socialist press. How were workers described, invoked and addressed as a new kind of community of political interest and action in these publications?Refuting perspectives of socio-economic determinism, this study adopts a conception of belonging and agency that views political communities as discursively produced by the creation of subject positions and the interpellation of individuals to them. The study is also influenced by recent re-evaluations of the category of the event associated with poststructuralism, and analyzes operations of constitutive rhetoric in forming a new symbolic field of class identity and agency in an open-ended and multivalent historical situation. The analysis shows how workers were construed as political agents in the Stockholm press during the mid-nineteenth century turmoil by being described, invoked and addressed within the framework of four main rival narratives. The socialist press tried to evoke a self-organizing working class within a collectivist narrative of labour’s liberation and universal male suffrage. The liberal press interpellated workers to a position aligned with the reformist middle class within a narrative of individual self-determination and gradual improvement. The royalist narrative of reconciliation was aimed at separating the large mass of workers from socialist and communist ideologues, deemed as mischievous outsiders, while at the same time offering them a new-found and prominent role as protectors of social harmony and peace. Only within the royalist narrative of catastrophe were the workers continuously excluded from mobilizing appeals, instead being invoked as the harbingers of an approaching communist revolution, against which all other sections of society should unite.

  • Clinical course of patients with single large-scale mtDNA deletions and childhood onset anemia
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 14th European Paediatric Neurology Society Congress, Glasgow, UK (ISBN 978-3-00-072065-9).
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Objective: To add to our knowledge of the clinical spectrum of patients with single large-scale mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletion and childhood onset anemia. Methods: Retrospective collection of clinical data from medical records for patients, both living and deceased, with a single large-scale mtDNA deletion from seven mitochondrial disease centers in five countries. Statistical analysis with descriptive methods and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Results: Seventeen patients matching the genetic criterium and with anemia onset before six years of age. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency was only seen in five patients in this group. Multiple organs were involved in all patients, with the most common non-hematologic ones being skeletal muscle, central nervous system, endocrine, eyes, gastrointestinal system, kidneys, hearing, liver and heart. Psychomotor retardation was seen in ten patients, hearing impairment in nine patients, failure to thrive in eight patients. Eight later developed Kearns-Sayre syndrome. Eleven patients were deceased, with a median age at death of 7.5 years. Conclusions: The classically described phenotype of patients with large-scale mtDNA deletions and early onset anemia is Pearson marrow-pancreas syndrome, characterized by sideroblastic anemia and exocrine pancreas dysfunction. Only a minority of our patients fulfill the original criteria of Pearson syndrome though. Involvement of other organs than the pancreas is more common. The clinical course vary, but multi-system impact is the rule and life-expectancy is low. Early onset anemia in patients with large-scale mtDNA deletions is most frequently not associated with exocrine pancreas dysfunction. Better knowledge of the phenotype is helpful for diagnosis and more accurate prognosis.

  • Phenotypic spectrum and clinical course of single large-scale mitochondrial DNA deletion disease in the paediatric population: a multicentre study.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medical Genetics. - : BMJ. - 0022-2593 .- 1468-6244. ; 60:1, s. 65-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Large-scale mitochondrial DNA deletions (LMD) are a common genetic cause of mitochondrial disease and give rise to a wide range of clinical features. Lack of longitudinal data means the natural history remains unclear. This study was undertaken to describe the clinical spectrum in a large cohort of patients with paediatric disease onset. Methods A retrospective multicentre study was performed in patients with clinical onset <16 years of age, diagnosed and followed in seven European mitochondrial disease centres. Results A total of 80 patients were included. The average age at disease onset and at last examination was 10 and 31 years, respectively. The median time from disease onset to death was 11.5 years. Pearson syndrome was present in 21%, Kearns-Sayre syndrome spectrum disorder in 50% and progressive external ophthalmoplegia in 29% of patients. Haematological abnormalities were the hallmark of the disease in preschool children, while the most common presentations in older patients were ptosis and external ophthalmoplegia. Skeletal muscle involvement was found in 65% and exercise intolerance in 25% of the patients. Central nervous system involvement was frequent, with variable presence of ataxia (40%), cognitive involvement (36%) and stroke-like episodes (9%). Other common features were pigmentary retinopathy (46%), short stature (42%), hearing impairment (39%), cardiac disease (39%), diabetes mellitus (25%) and renal disease (19%). Conclusion Our study provides new insights into the phenotypic spectrum of childhood-onset, LMD-associated syndromes. We found a wider spectrum of more prevalent multisystem involvement compared with previous studies, most likely related to a longer time of follow-up.

  • Tuberculosis Infection and Disease Among Pregnant People Living in Sweden With Origin in Tuberculosis-Endemic Countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Open Forum Infectious Diseases. - 2328-8957. ; 10:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Pregnancy has been associated with elevated incidence of tuberculosis (TB) disease. Since 2014, people living in Sweden with origin in TB-endemic countries have been offered screening for TB infection in antenatal care (ANC) using Quantiferon-TB assays. We assessed factors associated with TB infection in this population and determined the incidence of TB disease during pregnancy and postpartum periods with regard to ANC Quantiferon-TB results. Methods: Quantiferon-TB results obtained during ANC in Sweden, 2014-2018, were linked to data from national registers (Pregnancy Register, Patient Register and Tuberculosis Register). Factors associated with TB infection (defined as Quantiferon-TB ≥0.35 IU/mL) were identified using logistic regression analysis. Incidence of TB disease was determined with regard to pregnancy, postpartum and subsequent periods, and ANC Quantiferon-TB results. Results: Among 7638 screened individuals, 1424 (18.6%) had TB infection. Tuberculosis infection was independently associated with higher age at immigration (adjusted odds ratio, 1.04 [95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.05]; P <. 001), and was more common among people originating from Africa compared to other world regions (845/3088 [27.4%] vs 579/4550 [12.7%]; P <. 001). In total, 16 participants were diagnosed with TB disease (10 during pregnancy, 4 at <6 months after delivery, 2 at >6 months after delivery); among these, all diagnosed during pregnancy/postpartum had positive ANC Quantiferon-TB results (constituting 14/1424 [1%] of people with TB infection). Conclusions: Among pregnant people screened in Swedish ANC, TB infection was associated with higher age and African origin. All cases of TB disease reported in persons with TB infection at ANC screening occurred during pregnancy or postpartum.

  • Cardiovascular effects of intrauterine exposure to maternal HIV and antiretroviral therapy in Ethiopian infants followed from fetal life
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: AIDS. - 0269-9370. ; 36:7, s. 941-951
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective:To assess cardiovascular effects of in-utero HIV and antiretroviral treatment (ART) exposure on offspring of HIV-positive mothers in Ethiopia.Design:HIV-positive and HIV-negative pregnancies were identified from a prospective cohort of women recruited at their first antenatal care visit in Ethiopia, using a nested case-control design. Methods:Fetal standard ultrasound and echocardiography were performed at 2237 weeks of pregnancy to assess fetal biometry and cardiac structure. Postnatal cardiovascular evaluation, including echocardiography and vascular assessment, was performed at 6 months of age. Cardiovascular data were correlated to HIV serostatus, antiretroviral drug exposure and HIV-unrelated maternal characteristics. Results:Fetuses from 29 HIV-positive and 67 HIV-negative women paired by gestational age at scan were included. Among HIV-positive women, 25 were on ART before conception, and 4 initiated ART during pregnancy. Estimated fetal weight was similar in both groups [mean 1873 g (standard deviation; SD 569) vs. 1839 g (SD 579) P = 0.79, respectively]. Fetal cardiac morphometry was similar with regard to maternal HIV serostatus: cardiothoracic ratio mean 0.26 (SD 0.05) vs. 0.25 (SD 0.06), P = 0.48; and septal wall thickness mean 4.03 mm (SD 0.58) vs. 3.98 mm (SD 0.70), P = 0.94. No significant cardiovascular differences were detected postnatally according to maternal HIV serostatus: septal wall thickness mean 5.46 mm (SD 0.65) vs. 5.49 (SD 0.89); P = 0.896; isovolumic relaxation time 55.08 ms (SD 6.57) vs. 56.56 (SD 6.74); P = 0.359.Conclusion:In offspring of Ethiopian women, intrauterine exposure to HIV and ART were not associated with cardiovascular changes from fetal life up to infanthood.
