Sediment record from the western Arctic Ocean with an improved Late Quaternary age resolution : HOTRAX core HLY0503-8JPC, Mendeleev Ridge

- Sediment core HLY0503-8JPC raised by the HOTRAX'05 expedition from the Mendeleev Ridge was analyzed for multiple lithological, paleontological. and stable-isotopic proxies to reconstruct paleoceanographic conditions in the western Arctic Ocean during the Late Quaternary. The core, extensively sampled in the upper 5 m, reveals pronounced changes in sedimentary environments during the ca. 250 kyr interval encompassing Marine Isotopic Stages (MIS) 1 to 7. An estimated average resolution of 500 yr/sample, at least for the last glacial cycle including the last interglacial, provides more detail than seen in other sedimentary records from the western Arctic Ocean. The age control is provided by C-14 and amino acid racemization measurements on planktonic foraminifers and correlations with the stratigraphy developed for the central Lomonosov Ridge and with glacial events at the Eurasian Arctic margin. Cyclic variations in lithology combined with foraminiferal abundance and stable-isotopic composition indicate profound changes in hydrographic and depositional environments between interglacial-type and glacial-type periods apparently reflecting a combination of 100-kyr and precessional time scales. This periodicity is complicated by abrupt iceberg- and/or meltwater-discharge events with variable (Laurentide vs. Eurasian) provenance. The proxy record from the interval identified as the last interglacial (MIS 5e), which may aid in understanding the future state of the Arctic Ocean, indicates low ice conditions and possibly enhanced stratification of the water column.

Common suppression pattern of eta and pi(0) mesons at high transverse momentum in Au plus Au collisions at root SNN=200 GeV

- Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of eta mesons have been measured within p(T)=2-10 GeV/c at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. In central Au+Au the eta yields are significantly suppressed compared to peripheral Au+Au, d+Au, and p+p yields scaled by the corresponding number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. The magnitude, centrality, and p(T) dependence of the suppression is common, within errors, for eta and pi(0). The ratio of eta to pi(0) spectra at high p(T) amounts to 0.40 < R-eta/pi(0)< 0.48 for the three systems, in agreement with the world average measured in hadronic and nuclear reactions and, at large scaled momentum, in e(+)e(-) collisions.

Effects of counting variances on water quality assessments: implications from four benthic diatom samples, each counted by 40 diatomists

- The European Water Framework Directive (EU WFD) aims to improve and maintain the water quality of lakes and rivers. Diatoms play an important role for implementing the EU WFD as they are widely used to assess water quality. To asses and use diatom-based evaluations in practice, it is essential to know and to minimize the analyst-dependent variability of the primary diatom results. We compare the counting results of benthic diatoms from two river and two lake samples as identified by 40 participants of the first German benthic diatom intercalibration exercise. Differences among participants and auditors are calculated with the Bray-Curtis distance, and similarities are graphically displayed by detrended correspondence analyses. Additionally, this study identifies the effects of counting variances on the ecological water assessment with the German PHYLIB method for implementing the EU WFD using the above dataset. Counting result differences among participants may have a significant impact on the assessed water quality. Some taxonomically problematic taxa do not have indicator values (no impact), sometimes, several taxonomic mistakes counterbalance each other during assessment (no or minor impact), and sometimes, taxonomic differences greatly influence the assessment due to highly deviating taxon abundances and/or strongly differing indicator values between mistaken taxa. Intercalibration exercises promote discussion about taxonomy, identify problematic taxa, and harmonize taxonomic concepts among diatomists. Thus, the shown analyst-induced variability of diatom counts may be reduced with an intercalibration exercise, thereby further refining the accuracy of water quality assessments.

Elliptic flow of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

- The anisotropy parameter (v(2)), the second harmonic of the azimuthal particle distribution, has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at roots(NN)=200 GeV for identified and inclusive charged particle production at central rapidities (eta<0.35) with respect to the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (eta=3-4 ). We observe that the v(2) of mesons falls below that of (anti)baryons for p(T)>2 GeV/c, in marked contrast to the predictions of a hydrodynamical model. A quark-coalescence model is also investigated.

- The transverse momentum dependence of the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v(2), the second harmonic of the azimuthal distribution, for electrons at midrapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.35) has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The measurement was made with respect to the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (vertical bar eta vertical bar = 3.1-3.9). From the result we have measured the v(2) of electrons from heavy flavor decay after subtraction of the v(2) of electrons from other sources such as photon conversions and Dalitz decay from light neutral mesons. We observe a nonzero single electron v(2) with a 90% confidence level in the intermediate-p(T) region. The precision of the present data set does not permit us to conclude definitively that heavy quarks exhibit thermalization with the transverse flow of the bulk matter.

Production of omega mesons at large transverse momenta in p+p and d+Au collisions at root S(NN) = 200 GeV

- The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the invariant cross section for omega-meson production at midrapidity in the transverse momentum range 2.5 < p(T)< 9.25 GeV/c in p+p and d+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Measurements in two decay channels (omega ->pi(0)pi(+)pi(-) and omega ->pi(0)gamma) yield consistent results, and the reconstructed omega mass agrees with the accepted value within the p(T) range of the measurements. The omega/pi(0) ratio is found to be 0.85 +/- 0.05(stat)+/- 0.09(sys) in p+p and 0.94 +/- 0.08(stat)+/- 0.12(sys) in d+Au collisions, independent of p(T). The nuclear modification factor R-dA(omega) is 1.03 +/- 0.12(stat)+/- 0.21(sys) and 0.83 +/- 0.21(stat)+/- 0.17(sys) in minimum bias and central (0-20%) d+Au collisions, respectively.
