  • Understanding electron magnetic circular dichroism in a transition potential approach
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 97:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper introduces an approach based on transition potentials for inelastic scattering to understand the underlying physics of electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD). The transition potentials are sufficiently localized to permit atomic-scale EMCD. Two-beam and three-beam systematic row cases are discussed in detail in terms of transition potentials for conventional transmission electron microscopy, and the basic symmetries which arise in the three-beam case are confirmed experimentally. Atomic-scale EMCD in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), using both a standard STEM probe and vortex beams, is discussed.

  • High-T-c SQUID biomagnetometers
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Superconductor Science & Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-2048 .- 1361-6668. ; 30:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we review the preparation technology, integration in measurement systems and tests of high-T-c superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) intended for biomagnetic applications. A focus is on developments specific to Forschungszentrum Julich GmbH, Chalmers University of Technology, MedTech West, and the University of Gothenburg, while placing these results in the perspective of those achieved elsewhere. Sensor fabrication, including the deposition and structuring of epitaxial oxide heterostructures, materials for substrates, epitaxial bilayer buffers, bicrystal and step-edge Josephson junctions, and multilayer flux transformers are detailed. The properties of the epitaxial multilayer high-T-c direct current SQUID sensors, including their integration in measurement systems with special electronics and liquid nitrogen cryostats, are presented in the context of biomagnetic recording. Applications that include magnetic nanoparticle based molecular diagnostics, magnetocardiography, and magnetoencephalography are presented as showcases of high-T-c biomagnetic systems. We conclude by outlining future challenges.

  • Comparative analysis of obesity-related cardiometabolic and renal biomarkers in human plasma and serum.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scientific reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The search for biomarkers associated with obesity-related diseases is ongoing, but it is not clear whether plasma and serum can be used interchangeably in this process. Here we used high-throughput screening to analyze 358 proteins and 76 lipids, selected because of their relevance to obesity-associated diseases, in plasma and serum from age- and sex-matched lean and obese humans. Most of the proteins/lipids had similar concentrations in plasma and serum, but a subset showed significant differences. Notably, a key marker of cardiovascular disease PAI-1 showed a difference in concentration between the obese and lean groups only in plasma. Furthermore, some biomarkers showed poor correlations between plasma and serum, including PCSK9, an important regulator of cholesterol homeostasis. Collectively, our results show that the choice of biofluid may impact study outcome when screening for obesity-related biomarkers and we identify several markers where this will be the case.
