  • Accelerating digital transformation : 10 years of software center
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book celebrates the 10-year anniversary of Software Center (a collaboration between 18 European companies and five Swedish universities) by presenting some of the most impactful and relevant journal or conference papers that researchers in the center have published over the last decade. The book is organized around the five themes around which research in Software Center is organized, i.e. Continuous Delivery, Continuous Architecture, Metrics, Customer Data and Ecosystems Driven Development, and AI Engineering. The focus of the Continuous Delivery theme is to help companies to continuously build high quality products with the right degree of automation. The Continuous Architecture theme addresses challenges that arise when balancing the need for architectural quality and more agile ways of working with shorter development cycles. The Metrics theme studies and provides insight to understand, monitor and improve software processes, products and organizations. The fourth theme, Customer Data and Ecosystem Driven Development, helps companies make sense of the vast amounts of data that are continuously collected from products in the field. Eventually, the theme of AI Engineering addresses the challenge that many companies struggle with in terms of deploying machine- and deep-learning models in industrial contexts with production quality. Each theme has its own part in the book and each part has an introduction chapter and then a carefully selected reprint of the most important papers from that theme. This book mainly aims at researchers and advanced professionals in the areas of software engineering who would like to get an overview about the achievement made in various topics relevant for industrial large-scale software development and management – and to see how research benefits from a close cooperation between industry and academia.

  • Software Logs for Machine Learning in a DevOps Environment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 46th Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications, SEAA 2020. ; , s. 29-33
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • System logs perform a critical function in software-intensive systems as logs record the state of the system and significant events in the system at important points in time. Unfortunately, log entries are typically created in an ad-hoc, unstructured and uncoordinated fashion, limiting their usefulness for analytics and machine learning. In a DevOps environment, especially, unmanaged evolution in log data structure causes frequent disruption of operations in automated data pipelines, dashboards and analytics. In this paper, we present the main challenges of contemporary approaches to generating, storing and managing the evolution of system logs data for large, complex, software-intensive systems based on an in-depth case study at a world-leading telecommunications company. Second, we present an approach for generating and managing the evolution of log data in a DevOps environment that does not suffer from the aforementioned challenges and is optimized for use in machine learning. Third, we provide validation of the approach based on expert interviews that confirm that the approach addresses the identified challenges and problems.

  • Nonstandard Errors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF FINANCE. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0022-1082 .- 1540-6261. ; 79:3, s. 2339-2390
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data-generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty-nonstandard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for more reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer-review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants.

  • National records of 3000 European bee and hoverfly species : A contribution to pollinator conservation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Insect Conservation and Diversity. - 1752-458X. ; 16:6, s. 758-775
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pollinators play a crucial role in ecosystems globally, ensuring the seed production of most flowering plants. They are threatened by global changes and knowledge of their distribution at the national and continental levels is needed to implement efficient conservation actions, but this knowledge is still fragmented and/or difficult to access. As a step forward, we provide an updated list of around 3000 European bee and hoverfly species, reflecting their current distributional status at the national level (in the form of present, absent, regionally extinct, possibly extinct or non-native). This work was attainable by incorporating both published and unpublished data, as well as knowledge from a large set of taxonomists and ecologists in both groups. After providing the first National species lists for bees and hoverflies for many countries, we examine the current distributional patterns of these species and designate the countries with highest levels of species richness. We also show that many species are recorded in a single European country, highlighting the importance of articulating European and national conservation strategies. Finally, we discuss how the data provided here can be combined with future trait and Red List data to implement research that will further advance pollinator conservation.

  • Methylphenidate undermines or enhances divergent creativity depending on baseline dopamine synthesis capacity
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Neuropsychopharmacology. - : Springer Nature. - 0893-133X .- 1740-634X. ; 48:13, s. 1849-1858
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Catecholamine-enhancing psychostimulants, such as methylphenidate have long been argued to undermine creative thinking. However, prior evidence for this is weak or contradictory, stemming from studies with small sample sizes that do not consider the well-established large variability in psychostimulant effects across different individuals and task demands. We aimed to definitively establish the link between psychostimulants and creative thinking by measuring effects of methylphenidate in 90 healthy participants on distinct creative tasks that measure convergent and divergent thinking, as a function of individuals’ baseline dopamine synthesis capacity, indexed with 18F-FDOPA PET imaging. In a double-blind, within-subject design, participants were administered methylphenidate, placebo or selective D2 receptor antagonist sulpiride. The results showed that striatal dopamine synthesis capacity and/or methylphenidate administration did not affect divergent and convergent thinking. However, exploratory analysis demonstrated a baseline dopamine-dependent effect of methylphenidate on a measure of response divergence, a creativity measure that measures response variability. Response divergence was reduced by methylphenidate in participants with low dopamine synthesis capacity but enhanced in those with high dopamine synthesis capacity. No evidence of any effect of sulpiride was found. These results show that methylphenidate can undermine certain forms of divergent creativity but only in individuals with low baseline dopamine levels.

  • Evidence for absence of links between striatal dopamine synthesis capacity and working memory capacity, spontaneous eye-blink rate, and trait impulsivity
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Individual differences in striatal dopamine synthesis capacity have been associated with working memory capacity, trait impulsivity, and spontaneous eye-blink rate (sEBR), as measured with readily available and easily administered, ‘off-the-shelf’ tests. Such findings have raised the suggestion that individual variation in dopamine synthesis capacity, estimated with expensive and invasive brain positron emission tomography (PET) scans, can be approximated with simple, more pragmatic tests. However, direct evidence for the relationship between these simple trait measures and striatal dopamine synthesis capacity has been limited and inconclusive. We measured striatal dopamine synthesis capacity using [18F]-FDOPA PET in a large sample of healthy volunteers (N = 94) and assessed the correlation with simple, short tests of working memory capacity, trait impulsivity, and sEBR. We additionally explored the relationship with an index of subjective reward sensitivity. None of these trait measures correlated significantly with striatal dopamine synthesis capacity, nor did they have out-of-sample predictive power. Bayes factor analyses indicated the evidence was in favour of absence of correlations for all but subjective reward sensitivity. These results warrant caution for using these off-the-shelf trait measures as proxies of striatal dopamine synthesis capacity.

  • OpEx driven software architecture a case study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: CEUR Workshop Proceedings. - 1613-0073. ; 2978
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last thirty years, the software industry has changed how systems are architected and how systems are distributed. Software is moving from a monolithic architecture and locally installed application to micro-services architecture and applications accessible through the internet. The accessibility over the internet is provided by the emergence of cloud providers like Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google GCP. This transformation also impacts the financial structure of software projects, which is moving from capital expenditure (CapEx) to operational expenditure (OpEx). This paper highlights the implication of architecture decisions on a cloud application’s operating cost based on two industrial case studies.

  • Carrot and Stick approaches when managing Technical Debt
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2020 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Technical Debt, TechDebt 2020. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. ; , s. 21-30
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When developing software, it is vitally important to keep the level of technical debt down since it is well established from several studies that technical debt can, e.g., lower the development productivity, decrease the developers’ morale, and compromise the overall quality of the software. However, even if researchers and practitioners working in today's software development industry are quite familiar with the concept of technical debt and its related negative consequences, there has been no empirical research focusing specifically on how software managers actively communicate and manage the need to keep the level of technical debt as low as possible. This paper aims to explore how software companies encourage and reward practitioners for actively keeping the level of technical debt down and also whether the companies use any forcing or penalizing initiatives when managing technical debt. This paper reports the results of both an online web-survey provided quantitative data from 258 participants and follow-up interviews with 32 industrial software practitioners. The findings show that having a TD management strategy can significantly impact the amount of TD in the software. When surveying how commonly used different TD management strategies are, we found that only the encouraging strategy is, to some extent, adopted in today's’ software industry. This study also provides a model describing the four assessed strategies by presenting its strategies and tactics, together with recommendations on how they could be operationalized in today’s software companies.
