    • The agenda for the First International Research Symposium on Facilities Management, organised by the University of Salford on behalf of the European Facility Management network, EuroFM, and held in Salford in April 2002, sought to encourage the sharing of theoretical and practical knowledge amongst researchers, and to focus on the workplace as a broad theme. The aim of the Symposium was to strengthen the theoretical foundations, to advance knowledge and to promote research into facilities management.

  • Cross-border post-acquisition knowledge transfer among construction consultants
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Construction Management and Economics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1466-433X .- 0144-6193. ; 22:4, s. 421-427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mergers and acquisitions among engineering consulting firms and other professional service organizations occur frequently. International acquisitions should pose challenges because of corporate and national barriers of culture. The purpose here has been to study the relative influences of technical and cultural heterogeneity on knowledge transfer in a post-merger situation where offices in two countries are involved. In 2001, the UK-based WSP Group - providing management and consultancy services to the property, land and construction sectors - acquired J&W, a leading engineering consultancy firm in Sweden. Two technical disciplines, rail and contaminated land, were selected for this survey. Four offices, two in each country, participated with eight consultants in each place. The survey shows occasional, two-way knowledge exchange taking place 16 months after acquisition. Face-to-face meetings, e-mail and technical business gatherings are perceived as the best transfer mechanisms. The presence of knowledgeable customers differs between disciplines and seems to explain differences between transfer patterns. Among metrics for knowledge transfer, the number of international joint projects is assigned the highest rank. Consequences for the choice of organization of knowledge transfer, as well as the measurement and communication of progress in knowledge transfer, are identified.

  • Outsourcing facilities services: needs and practices of Swedish owners of commercial property
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings CIB W70 Facilities Management and Maintenance International Symposium, Hong Kong, 7-8 December 2004. ; , s. 395-400
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Why and how facilities services are outsourced is a question that continues to attract interest. The purpose of this study has been to investigate links between categories of property owners and their demand for packaged facilities services. The empirical part is based on questionnaire responses from 20 large owners of commercial property in Sweden, and on interviews with 11 of these owners. Owners are characterized by portfolio value, geographical spread of properties, investment horizon, core business, and average tenant size. Three owner segments are identified and tentatively labelled Building Managers, Active Asset Managers, and Passive Asset Managers. Their outsourcing policies and practices differ clearly.

  • Serviced offices: owner capabilities for FM coordination
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Facilities. - : Emerald. - 0263-2772. ; 22:3/4, s. 74-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Owners of multi-tenant office buildings pursue various strategies for providing bundles of services to building users. In order to study what determines patterns of bundling, 12 Swedish owners were interviewed in 2002. Strategies were found to depend on the size of their property holdings, where those who held less than 100,000m2 differed from large property owners. There is also a difference between owners that have a tradition of providing construction and property-related services and owners with their main activities in the financial sector. These patterns can be explained by considering transaction costs arising from services coordination and by referring to the dynamics of learning and competence in owner organizations. It is suggested that service-offering owners should increase their competence for monitoring service delivery. Some property owners may benefit more from developing the competence needed for a sole provider coordinated strategy.

  • Space use among growth companies: linking the theories
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Facilities Management: Innovation and Performance, eds, K Alexander, B Atkin, J Bröchner and T Haugen. London: Spon Press. - : Routledge. ; , s. 47-58
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How do growth companies handle their space needs in successive stages of their evolution? Most studies of workspace changes have dealt with existing large companies rather than with small and growing companies. As publications extolling the 'new economy' multiplied, few people seem to have noticed that the eager converts who espoused new office layouts for networking tended to be large, old and mature companies (see e.g. Rifkin, 2000). A dominant theme has been how these companies can transform their facilities so that changes in work practices brought about by networked personal computers, web tools and mobile telecommunications can be accommodated and exploited. It is rare that there is an analysis of how small and growing firms manage their needs for space; when O'Mara (1999) discusses incrementalism in this context, it is an exception.
