  • A limit on the variation of the speed of light arising from quantum gravity effects
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 462:7271, s. 331-334
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A cornerstone of Einstein’s special relativity is Lorentz invariance—the postulate that all observers measure exactly the same speed of light in vacuum, independent of photon-energy. While special relativity assumes that there is no fundamental length-scale associated with such invariance, there is a fundamental scale (the Planck scale, lPlanck~1.62×10-33cm or EPlanck = MPlanckc2~1.22×1019GeV), at which quantum effects are expected to strongly affect the nature of space–time. There is great interest in the (not yet validated) idea that Lorentz invariance might break near the Planck scale. A key test of such violation of Lorentz invariance is a possible variation of photon speed with energy. Even a tiny variation in photon speed, when accumulated over cosmological light-travel times, may be revealed by observing sharp features in γ-ray burst (GRB) light-curves. Here we report the detection of emission up to ~31GeV from the distant and short GRB090510. We find no evidence for the violation of Lorentz invariance, and place a lower limit of 1.2EPlanck on the scale of a linear energy dependence (or an inverse wavelength dependence), subject to reasonable assumptions about the emission (equivalently we have an upper limit of lPlanck/1.2 on the length scale of the effect). Our results disfavour quantum-gravity theories in which the quantum nature of space–time on a very small scale linearly alters the speed of light.

  • FERMI OBSERVATIONS OF GRB 090902B : A DISTINCT SPECTRAL COMPONENT IN THE PROMPT AND DELAYED EMISSION
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8205 .- 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 706:1, s. L138-L144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the observation of the bright, long gamma-ray burst (GRB), GRB 090902B, by the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) and Large Area Telescope (LAT) instruments on-board the Fermi observatory. This was one of the brightest GRBs to have been observed by the LAT, which detected several hundred photons during the prompt phase. With a redshift of z = 1.822, this burst is among the most luminous detected by Fermi. Time-resolved spectral analysis reveals a significant power-law component in the LAT data that is distinct from the usual Band model emission that is seen in the sub-MeV energy range. This power-law component appears to extrapolate from the GeV range to the lowest energies and is more intense than the Band component, both below similar to 50 keV and above 100 MeV. The Band component undergoes substantial spectral evolution over the entire course of the burst, while the photon index of the power-law component remains constant for most of the prompt phase, then hardens significantly toward the end. After the prompt phase, power-law emission persists in the LAT data as late as 1 ks post-trigger, with its flux declining as t(-1.5). The LAT detected a photon with the highest energy so far measured from a GRB, 33.4(-3.5)(+ 2.7) GeV. This event arrived 82 s after the GBM trigger and similar to 50 s after the prompt phase emission had ended in the GBM band. We discuss the implications of these results for models of GRB emission and for constraints on models of the extragalactic background light.

  • Fermi Observations of High-energy Gamma-ray Emission from GRB 080825C
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 707:1, s. 580-592
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has opened a new high-energy window in the study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Here we present a thorough analysis of GRB 080825C, which triggered the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM), and was the first firm detection of a GRB by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). We discuss the LAT event selections, background estimation, significance calculations, and localization for Fermi GRBs in general and GRB 080825C in particular. We show the results of temporal and time-resolved spectral analysis of the GBM and LAT data. We also present some theoretical interpretation of GRB 080825C observations as well as some common features observed in other LAT GRBs.

  • Genome sequence and analysis of the Irish potato famine pathogen Phytophthora infestans
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 461:7262, s. 393-398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phytophthora infestans is the most destructive pathogen of potato and a model organism for the oomycetes, a distinct lineage of fungus-like eukaryotes that are related to organisms such as brown algae and diatoms. As the agent of the Irish potato famine in the mid-nineteenth century, P. infestans has had a tremendous effect on human history, resulting in famine and population displacement(1). To this day, it affects world agriculture by causing the most destructive disease of potato, the fourth largest food crop and a critical alternative to the major cereal crops for feeding the world's population(1). Current annual worldwide potato crop losses due to late blight are conservatively estimated at $6.7 billion(2). Management of this devastating pathogen is challenged by its remarkable speed of adaptation to control strategies such as genetically resistant cultivars(3,4). Here we report the sequence of the P. infestans genome, which at similar to 240 megabases (Mb) is by far the largest and most complex genome sequenced so far in the chromalveolates. Its expansion results from a proliferation of repetitive DNA accounting for similar to 74% of the genome. Comparison with two other Phytophthora genomes showed rapid turnover and extensive expansion of specific families of secreted disease effector proteins, including many genes that are induced during infection or are predicted to have activities that alter host physiology. These fast-evolving effector genes are localized to highly dynamic and expanded regions of the P. infestans genome. This probably plays a crucial part in the rapid adaptability of the pathogen to host plants and underpins its evolutionary potential.

  • Association between modelled traffic related air pollution (NO2) and asthma score in ECHRS.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Respiratory Journal. - : The European Respiratory Society. - 0903-1936 .- 1399-3003. ; 34:4, s. 834-842
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this analysis is to study the association between air pollution and asthma among adults. For this goal, a previously developed "asthma score" was used.Persons aged 25-44 years were randomly selected (1991-1993) and followed up (2000-2002) within the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS-I and II). The asthma score was defined from 0 to 5, based on positive answers to symptoms reported for the last 12 months: wheeze/breathlessness, chest tightness, dyspnoea at rest, dyspnoea after exercise, and woken by dyspnoea. Participants' home addresses were linked to outdoor modelled NO2 estimates for 2001. Negative binomial regression was used to model the asthma score. The score from ECRHS-II was positively associated with NO2 (Ratio of the Mean asthma Score (RMS) 1.23, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI): 1.09-1.38 for an increase of 10 microg.m(-3)). After excluding participants with asthma and symptoms at baseline, the association remained (RMS 1.25, 95%CI: 1.05-1.51) and was particularly high among those reporting a high score in ECRHS-II. The latter probably reflects incident cases of asthma. Our results suggest that traffic-related pollution causes asthma symptoms and possibly asthma incidence in adults. The asthma score offers an alternative to investigate the course and aetiology of asthma in adults.

  • Pauli spin blockade in carbon nanotube double quantum dots
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 77:24, s. 245439-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report Pauli spin blockade in a carbon nanotube double quantum dot defined by tunnel barriers at the contacts and a structural defect in the nanotube. We observe a pronounced current suppression for negative source-drain bias voltages, which is investigated for both symmetric and asymmetric coupling of the quantum dots to the leads. The measured differential conductance agrees well with a theoretical model of a double quantum dot system in the spin-blockade regime, which allows us to estimate the occupation probabilities of the relevant singlet and triplet states. This work shows that effective spin-to-charge conversion in nanotube quantum dots is feasible and opens the possibility of single-spin readout in a material that is not limited by hyperfine interaction with nuclear spins.

  • Association between annoyance and individuals' values of nitrogen dioxide in a European setting.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of epidemiology and community health. - 1470-2738. ; 62:5, s. e12-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: Annoyance caused by air pollution has been proposed as an indicator of exposure to air pollution. The aim of this study was to assess the geographical homogeneity of the relationship between annoyance and modelled home-based nitrogen dioxide (NO2) measurements. METHODS: The European Community Respiratory Health Survey II was conducted in 2000-1, in 25 European centres in 12 countries. This analysis included 4753 subjects (from 37 in Tartu, Estonia, to 532 in Antwerp, Belgium) who answered the annoyance question and with available outdoor residential NO2 (4399 modelled and 354 measured) including 20 cities from 10 countries. Annoyance as a result of air pollution was self-reported on an 11-point scale (0, no disturbance at all; 10, intolerable disturbance). Demographic and socioeconomic factors, smoking status and the presence of respiratory symptoms or disease were measured through a standard questionnaire. Negative binomial regression was used. RESULTS: The median NO2 concentration was 27 microg.m(-3) (from 10 in Umeå, Sweden, to 57 in Barcelona, Spain). The mean of annoyance was 2.5 (from 0.7 in Reykjavik, Iceland, to 4.4 in Huelva, Spain). NO2 was associated with annoyance (ratio of the mean score 1.26 per 10 microg.m(-3), 95% CI 1.19 to 1.34). The association between NO2 and annoyance was heterogeneous among cities (p for heterogeneity <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Annoyance is associated with home outdoor air pollution but with a different strength by city. This indicates that annoyance is not a valid surrogate for air pollution exposure. Nevertheless, it may be a useful measure of perceived ambient air quality and could be considered a complementary tool for health surveillance.

  • Vasomotion has chloride-dependency in rat mesenteric small arteries.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Pflügers Archiv : European journal of physiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0031-6768 .- 1432-2013. ; 457:2, s. 389-404
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The possibility that Ca(2+)-activated Cl(-) conductances (CaCCs) contribute to oscillations in vascular tone (vasomotion) is tested in isolated mesenteric small arteries from rats where cGMP independent (I (Cl(Ca))) and cGMP-dependent (I (Cl(Ca,cGMP))) chloride conductances are important. The effect of anion substitution and Cl(-) channel blockers on noradrenaline (NA)-stimulated tension in isometrically mounted mesenteric arteries and for chloride conductance of smooth muscle cells isolated from these arteries were assessed electrophysiologically. Cl(-) (o) replacement with aspartate blocked vasomotion while 36mM SCN(-) (o) (substituted for Cl(-)) was sufficient to inhibit vasomotion. Oscillations in tone, membrane potential, and [Ca(2+)](i) disappeared with 36mM SCN(-). DIDS and Zn(2+) blocked I (Cl(Ca,cGMP)) but not I (Cl(Ca)). Vasomotion was not sensitive to DIDS and Zn(2+), and DIDS and Zn(2+) induce vasomotion in arteries without endothelium. The vasomotion in the presence of DIDS and Zn(2+) was sensitive to 36mM SCN(-) (o). The anion substitution data indicate that Cl(-) is crucial for the V (m) and [Ca(2+)](i) oscillations underlying vasomotion. The Cl(-) channel blocker data are consistent with both CaCCs being important.

  • Investigations of N@C60 and N@C70 stability under high pressure and high temperature conditions
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physica Status Solidi B vol. 246, issue 11-12. - : Wiley. ; , s. 2767-2770
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Endohedral fullerenes encapsulating single nitrogen atoms (N@C60 and N@C70) are spin active, due to the presence of unpaired nitrogen electron spins. High reactivity of nitrogen leads to a poor stability of these molecules at elevated temperatures, drastically restricting possibilities of their chemical treatment. In this study, N@C60 and N@C70 in toluene solutions were subjected to high pressure (HP) up to 0.8 GPa and annealed for 1, 2, 10 or 24 h, at either room or elevated temperatures. In each case the number of surviving molecules was evaluated based on the relative spin counts of ex situ EPR spectra obtained before and after the treatment. The enhanced thermal stability of N@C60 and N@C70 under HP conditions is attributed to inhibited formation of azabridges, which under normal pressure facilitate the escape of nitrogen from the fullerene cage.

  • Reduced cell proliferation and increased apoptosis are significant pathological mechanisms in a murine model of mild pseudoachondroplasia resulting from a mutation in the C-terminal domain of COMP
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Human Molecular Genetics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 16:17, s. 2072-2088
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pseudoachondroplasia (PSACH) is one of the more common skeletal dysplasias and results from mutations in cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP). Most COMP mutations identified to date cluster in the TSP3 repeat region of COMP and the mutant protein is retained in the rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) of chondrocytes and may result in increased cell death. In contrast, the pathomolecular mechanism of PSACH resulting from C-terminal domain COMP mutations remain largely unknown. This study describes the generation and analysis of a murine model of mild PSACH resulting from a p.Thr583Met mutation in the C-terminal globular domain (CTD) of COMP. Mutant animals are normal at birth, but grow slower than their wild-type littermates and by 9 weeks of age they have mild short-limb dwarfism. Furthermore, by 16 months of age mutant animals exhibit severe degeneration of articular cartilage, which is consistent with early onset osteoarthritis seen in PSACH patients. In the growth plates of mutant mice the chondrocyte columns are sparser and poorly organized. Mutant COMP is secreted into the extracellular matrix, but its localization is disrupted along with the distribution of several COMP-binding proteins. Although mutant COMP is not retained within the rER there is an unfolded protein/cell stress response and chondrocyte proliferation is significantly reduced, while apoptosis is both increased and spatially dysregulated. Overall, these data suggests a mutation in the CTD of COMP exerts a dominant-negative effect on both intra- and extracellular processes. This ultimately affects the morphology and proliferation of growth plate chondrocytes, eventually leading to chondrodysplasia and reduced long bone growth.
