  • A man-of-war in pieces : Fragmenting the Rikswasa of 1599
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Broken Bodies, Places and Objects. - : Routledge. - 9781032394992 ; , s. 274-288
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the 1960s, the wreck of a Swedish early 17th-century warship, the Rikswasa, was salvaged by two diving brothers who used the waterlogged oak in their carpeting business. Substantial parts of the wrecked hull were transformed into souvenirs, furniture and crafts, all marked with a plate stating the unique provenance of the material. The deliberate breakage, which took place at the same time as the world-famous Vasa was being reconstructed only a few miles away, marked the end of a 100-year-long period of commercial salvage operations of waterlogged wreck oak in Sweden, as ancient wrecks were thereafter protected by the Heritage Conservation Act. Drawing from the case of the Rikswasa, this contribution looks into the historic qualities attributed to the waterlogged wreck oak material and discusses how it encouraged fragmentation. It suggests that the breaking and redistributing of the Rikswasa can be understood in terms of a time-specific engagement with the past and an alternative take on heritage, which contrasts with the present preservationist paradigm. In addition, it is shown that the wreck fragments formed new objects in their own right, with a diversity of possible trajectories, and that this was enabled by fragmentation.

  • Evaluation of the Incredible Years Series - An open study of its effects when first introduced in Sweden
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-4725 .- 0803-9488. ; 61:2, s. 143-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Behaviour management problems (BMP) are common among children (4-12%) and the prevalence seems to be rising. Persistent antisocial behaviour often leads to poor long-term psychosocial adjustment. Structured parent-training programmes have proven to be the most effective way of treating BMP in young children. The Incredible Years Series (IYS), which is a manual-based programme, was introduced in Sweden in 2001. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of IYS in diverse clinical settings in Sweden. Parents of 113 children (3-9 years), recruited through the IYS-trained group leaders' ordinary services, participated in the study. The parents answered various questionnaires regarding their children's symptoms and their own psychological well-being before and after participating in the parent-training groups. The results are very encouraging; significant reduction of BMP in the children was found on all relevant measures. A significant increase in the self-rated wellbeing of the mothers was also found. The IYS seems to work in Sweden, even when used by group leaders who are in training. The importance of using a well-documented manualized method when implementing new models is accentuated.

  • Burn or let them Bury? : The net social cost of producing district heating from imported waste
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Energy Economics. - : Elsevier. - 0140-9883 .- 1873-6181. ; 105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, a net social cost framework is applied to provide insights on policy issues relating to the cross-border trade in waste fuel. We estimate the net social cost of using imported waste fuel in a highly efficient combined heat and power plant (CHP) in a cold climate by considering both private costs and benefits as well as external costs related to energy production, alternative waste management and fuel transport. We conclude that using imported waste fuel is beneficial from a societal perspective compared to using biofuel, given the wide range of assumptions regarding technical, economic and environmental characteristics. The net social cost is mainly determined by fuel cost advantages and the external cost of greenhouse gas emissions. External costs associated with transports only marginally impact the net social cost of waste imports for incineration. The results are robust to variation in the excess heat utilisation rate, which implies that importing waste for incineration would also be beneficial in countries with warmer climates where district heating networks already exist.
