  • Ethical struggles: Living stories from the frontline of retail banking
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, the financial sector globally has become much more reg-ulated to ensure ’ethical’ conduct, yet we have still to understand how the banks has worked to ensure a more cultural shift towards ethical conduct. The purpose of our paper is to examine the cultural changes in three different retail banks, focusing specifically on ethical sales and advising among front-line personnel. Our research question is: how is the appropriate advisor discursively constructed by management and the advisors. Inspired by Bakhtin and Aristotle’s theoretical lenses on practical eth-ics, we bring forward a vocabulary for discussing the ’ethics’ of retail banking in the front line today as well as empirical evidence for the emergence of new plots, identities and cultures of ’good bank-ing’. We argue that our empirical material derived from the cases studies of three different Scandinavi-an banks contributes to an understanding of how ethics may become a governing principle of collec-tive organizational practices and culture in the post-crisis financial sector. Our main academic contri-bution concerns the identification of three key ethical resources and forces that are entangled into each other in an unfinalized and incomplete wholeness, mutually struggling with each other in bringing forward an ethical cultural conduct yet-to-be-achieved. The practical contribution consists in the em-pirical findings of different managerial approaches to growing ethical cultures among frontline per-sonnel. The managerial challenge remains within the ethical struggles involved in the becoming of ethical organizational cultures. As the world is indeterminate and incomplete, ethics remains an ongo-ing work and task compelling practitioners at all levels of the organization to take it on.

  • Immune tolerance induction in patients with hemophilia A
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Thrombosis Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-2472 .- 0049-3848. ; 127, s. 6-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Replacement therapy with factor VIII (FVIII) concentrates has become the mainstay of treatment for hemophilia, but about 30% of patients with a severe disease develop neutralizing antibodies against FVIII, which can lead to treatment resistance and an increased risk of bleeding. Immune tolerance induction (ITI) overcomes the immune response to FVIII concentrates in the majority of patients. Several factors may influence the efficacy of ITI, including disease-related factors (e. g. peak inhibitor titer and pre-ITI titer), and genetic factors (e. g. type of mutation). Treatment-related factors, such as the type of FVIII concentrate used in ITI will also potentially influence the outcome. Specifically, higher success rates with von Willebrand factor (VWF)-containing factor VIII concentrates than with high-purity FVIII concentrates have been reported, but further studies are needed. Potential mechanisms involved include steric hindrance, inhibition of FVIII degradation, or immunomodulatory effects. However, the exact mechanism by which immune tolerance is induced remains unclear. High-dose FVIII ITI appears to induce immune tolerance more rapidly than low-dose protocols and with a reduced risk of bleeding episodes. The addition of immunosuppressive therapy, such as rituximab, to ITI may improve outcomes, although the optimal approach to combined ITI/immunosuppression has not been established. Ongoing studies are likely to provide further insight into the role of genetic features and the type of FVIII concentrate on the success rate of ITI. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Species-environment relationships and potential for distribution modelling in coastal waters
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sea Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1385-1101 .- 1873-1414. ; 85, s. 116-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to increasing pressure on the marine environment there is a growing need to understand species-environment relationships. To provide background for prioritising among variables (predictors) for use in distribution models, the relevance of predictors for benthic species was reviewed using the coastal Baltic Sea as a case-study area. Significant relationships for three response groups (fish, macroinvertebrates, macrovegetation) and six predictor categories (bottom topography, biotic features, hydrography, wave exposure, substrate and spatiotemporal variability) were extracted from 145 queried peer-reviewed field-studies covering three decades and six subregions. In addition, the occurrence of interaction among predictors was analysed. Hydrography was most often found in significant relationships, had low level of interaction with other predictors, but also had the most non-significant relationships. Depth and wave exposure were important in all subregions and are readily available, increasing their applicability for cross-regional modelling efforts. Otherwise, effort to model species distributions may prove challenging at larger scale as the relevance of predictors differed among both response groups and regions. Fish and hard bottom macrovegetation have the largest modelling potential, as they are structured by a set of predictors that at the same time are accurately mapped. A general importance of biotic features implies that these need to be accounted for in distribution modelling, but the mapping of most biotic features is challenging, which currently lowers the applicability. The presence of interactions suggests that predictive methods allowing for interactive effects are preferable. Detailing these complexities is important for future distribution modelling.
