    • The n_TOF facility at CERN has been designed for the measurement of neutron capture, fission and (n, xn) cross-sections with high accuracy. This requires a flexible and-due to the high instantaneous neutron flux-almost dead time free data acquisition system. A scalable and versatile data solution has been designed based on 8-bit flash-ADCs with sampling rates up to 2 GHz and 8 Mbyte memory buffer. The software is written in C and C++ and is running on PCs equipped with RedHat Linux.

    • Phytophthora infestans is the most destructive pathogen of potato and a model organism for the oomycetes, a distinct lineage of fungus-like eukaryotes that are related to organisms such as brown algae and diatoms. As the agent of the Irish potato famine in the mid-nineteenth century, P. infestans has had a tremendous effect on human history, resulting in famine and population displacement(1). To this day, it affects world agriculture by causing the most destructive disease of potato, the fourth largest food crop and a critical alternative to the major cereal crops for feeding the world's population(1). Current annual worldwide potato crop losses due to late blight are conservatively estimated at $6.7 billion(2). Management of this devastating pathogen is challenged by its remarkable speed of adaptation to control strategies such as genetically resistant cultivars(3,4). Here we report the sequence of the P. infestans genome, which at similar to 240 megabases (Mb) is by far the largest and most complex genome sequenced so far in the chromalveolates. Its expansion results from a proliferation of repetitive DNA accounting for similar to 74% of the genome. Comparison with two other Phytophthora genomes showed rapid turnover and extensive expansion of specific families of secreted disease effector proteins, including many genes that are induced during infection or are predicted to have activities that alter host physiology. These fast-evolving effector genes are localized to highly dynamic and expanded regions of the P. infestans genome. This probably plays a crucial part in the rapid adaptability of the pathogen to host plants and underpins its evolutionary potential.

    • The gamma decay of the 12(+) yrast trap in Fe-52 has been measured for the first time. The two E4 gamma-branches to the 8(+) states are hindered with respect to other B(E4) reduced transition probabilities measured in the f(7/2) shell. The interpretation of the data is given in the full pf shell model framework, comparing the results obtained with different residual interactions. It is shown that measurements of hexadecapole transition probabilities constitute a powerful tool in discriminating the correct configuration of the involved wavefunctions.

    • At present, there is a great interest in studying new sorbent materials for the removal of arsenic from aqueous solutions because of its high toxicity and adverse effects on human health. In previous research, sorghum biomass was found to be an efficient and economic sorbent for the removal of arsenic from aqueous solutions. In this investigation, the effects of CaCl2, MgCl 2, FeSO4, MgSO4, Fe(NO3) 3, and humic substances (peat moss, humin and humic acids) on arsenic binding to sorghum biomass were evaluated. Among these compounds, only iron salts were found to positively increase the sorption of arsenic to sorghum biomass. In addition, the sorption equilibrium was reached faster when the reaction mixture contained iron salts. However, an overall reduction of 21% of arsenic sorption to sorghum biomass was observed in the presence of MgSO 4. This interference may be due to the presence of sulfate ions, instead of the hard cations, that could be in competition with As for the same interaction sites or ligands. Peat moss, humins and humic acid, extracted from sphagnum peat moss, significantly decreased the arsenic sorption to sorghum biomass.

    • The development of efficient and economic new adsorbent materials for the removal of arsenic from groundwater is a priority in regions where human health is directly affected by elevated arsenic concentrations. Adsorption of arsenic on sorghum biomass (SB) was investigated for the removal of arsenic from aqueous solutions. Potentiometric titrations and FTIR analysis evidenced two potential binding sites associated with carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Batch experiments were carried out to determine the equilibrium time for arsenic adsorption to SB. The effect of pH on arsenic adsorption to SB was investigated for a pH range of 2.0-10.0. A strong influence of pH was demonstrated with a maximum removal of arsenic at pH 5.0. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms were applied to equilibrium data. The Freundlich model fitted the equilibrium data and provided evidence for site heterogeneity at the binding surface. Column experiments were performed to obtain the breakthrough curves for both non-immobilized sorghum biomass and immobilized sorghum biomass.

  • Iron-modified light expanded clay aggregates for the removal of arsenic(V) from groundwater

    • Iron modified materials have been proposed as a filter medium to remove arsenic compounds from groundwater. This research investigated the removal of arsenate, As(V) from aqueous solutions by iron-coated light expanded clay aggregates (Fe-LECA). Arsenic is effectively adsorbed by Fe-LECA in the optimum pH range 6-7 by using a 10 mg mL(-1) adsorbent dose. Kinetics experiments were performed to investigate the adsorption mechanisms. Electrostatic attraction and surface complexation were proposed to be the major arsenic removal mechanisms. The experimental data fitted the pseudo-first-order equation of Lagergren. For an arsenic concentration of 1 mg L-1, the rate constant (k(1)) of pseudo-first-order was 0.098 min(-1), representing a rapid adsorption in order to reach equilibrium early. Equilibrium sorption isotherms were constructed from batch sorption experiments and the data was best described by the Langmuir isotherm model. Large scale column experiments were conducted under different bed depths, flow rates, coating duration and initial iron salts concentration to determine the optimal arsenic removal efficiency by Fc-LECA column. Volumetric design as well as higher hydraulic detention time was proposed to optimize the efficiency of the column to remove arsenic. In addition, concentrated iron salts and longer coating duration were also found to be crucial parameters for arsenic removal. The maximum arsenic accumulation was 3.31 mg of As g(-1) of Fe-LECA when the column was operated at a flow rate of 10 mL min(-1) and the LECA was coated with 0.1 M FeCl3 suspension for a 24 h coating duration.   • Contrasting levels of variation in neutral and quantitative genetic loci on island populations of moor frogs (Rana arvalis)

    • Reduced levels of genetic variability and a prominent differentiation in both neutral marker genes and phenotypic traits are typical for many island populations as compared to their mainland conspecifics. However, whether genetic diversity in neutral marker genes reflects genetic variability in quantitative traits, and thus, their evolutionary potential, remains typically unclear. Moreover, the phenotypic differentiation on islands could be attributable to phenotypic plasticity, selection or drift; something which seldom has been tested. Using eight polymorphic microsatellite loci and quantitative genetic breeding experiments we conducted a detailed comparison on genetic variability and differentiation between Nordic islands (viz. Gotland, Öland and Læsø) and neighbouring mainland populations of moor frogs (Rana arvalis). As expected, the neutral variation was generally lower in island than in mainland populations. But as opposed to this, higher levels of additive genetic variation (V A) in body size and tibia length were found on the island of Gotland as compared to the mainland population. When comparing the differentiation seen in neutral marker genes (F ST) with the differentiation in genes coding quantitative traits (Q ST) two different evolutionary scenarios were found: while selection might explain a smaller size of moor frogs on Gotland, the differentiation seen in tibia length could be explained by genetic drift. These results highlight the limited utility of microsatellite loci alone in inferring the causes behind an observed phenotypic differentiation, or in predicting the amount of genetic variation in ecologically important quantitative traits.
