  • Measurements of quasi-trapped electron and positron fluxes with PAMELA
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 114, s. A12218-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents precise measurements of the differential energy spectra of quasi-trapped secondary electrons and positrons and their ratio between 80 MeV and 10 GeV in the near-equatorial region (altitudes between 350 km and 600 km). Latitudinal dependences of the spectra are analyzed in detail. The results were obtained from July until November 2006 onboard the Resurs-DK satellite by the PAMELA spectrometer, a general purpose cosmic ray detector system built around a permanent magnet spectrometer and a silicon-tungsten calorimeter.

  • Characterization of major enzymes and genes involved in flavonoid and proanthocyanidin biosynthesis during fruit development in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa)
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0003-9861. ; 465:1, s. 61-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The biosynthesis of flavonoids and proanthocyanidins was studied in cultivated strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) by combining biochemical and molecular approaches. Chemical analyses showed that ripe strawberries accumulate high amounts of pelargonidin-derived anthocyanins, and a larger pool of 3',4'-hydroxylated proanthocyanidins. Activities and properties of major recombinant enzymes were demonstrated by means of in vitro assays, with special emphasis on specificity for the biologically relevant 4'- and 3',4'-hydroxylated compounds. Only leucoanthocyanidin reductase showed a strict specificity for the 3',4'-hydroxylated leucocyanidin, while other enzymes accepted either hydroxylated substrate with different relative activity rates. The structure of late flavonoid pathway genes, leading to the synthesis of major compounds in ripe fruits, was elucidated. Complex developmental and spatial expression patterns were shown for phenylpropanoid and flavonoid genes in fruits throughout ripening as well as in leaves, petals and roots. Presented results elucidate key steps in the biosynthesis of strawberry flavonoid end products. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

  • PAMELA and indirect dark matter searches
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 11, s. 105023-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a review of the experimental results obtained by PAMELA in measuring the (p, (p) over bar ) and e(+/-) abundance in cosmic rays. In this context, we discuss the interpretation of the observed anomalous positron excess in terms of the annihilation of dark matter particles as well as in terms of standard astrophysical sources. Moreover we show the constraints on dark matter models from (p) over bar data.

  • Precision studies of cosmic rays with the PAMELA satellite experiment
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 2009 IEEE NUCLEAR SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM CONFERENCE RECORD, VOLS 1-5. - : IEEE. - 9781424439621 ; , s. 2125-2130
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PAMELA satellite experiment was launched into low earth orbit on June 15th 2006. The combination of a permanent magnet silicon strip spectrometer, and a silicon-tungsten imaging calorimeter allows precision studies of the charged cosmic radiation to be conducted over a wide energy range (100 MeV - 200 GeV). A primary scientific goal is to search for dark matter particle annihilations by measuring the energy spectra of cosmic ray antiparticles. Latest results from the PAMELA experiment will be reviewed with a particular focus on cosmic ray antiprotons and positrons. The status of PAMELA measurements for other cosmic ray species will also be reviewed.

  • Latest results from PAMELA
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PAMELA experiment is a satellite-borne apparatus designed to study charged particles in the cosmic radiation, with a particular focus on antiparticles. The detector is housed on the Resurs-DK1 satellite and it is taking data since June 2006. The main parts of the apparatus are a magnetic spectrometer, which is equipped with a silicon-microstrip tracking system and which is used to measure the rigidity and the charge of particles, and a silicon/tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter which provides particle identification. The main results about the antiparticles component of cosmic rays obtained during the first 500 days of data taking are summarized here.

  • The scaling of diving time budgets: Insights from an optimality approach
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: American Naturalist. - : University of Chicago Press. - 0003-0147 .- 1537-5323. ; 171:3, s. 305-314
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simple scaling arguments suggest that, among air-breathing divers, dive duration should scale approximately with mass to the one-third power. Recent phylogenetic analyses appear to confirm this. The same analyses showed that duration of time spent at the surface between dives has scaling very similar to that of dive duration, with the result that the ratio of dive duration to surface pause duration is approximately mass invariant. This finding runs counter to other arguments found in the diving literature that suggest that surface pause duration should scale more positively with mass, leading to a negative scaling of the dive-pause ratio. We use a published model of optimal time allocation in the dive cycle to show that optimal decisions can predict approximate mass invariance in the dive-pause ratio, especially if metabolism scales approximately with mass to the two-thirds power (as indicated by some recent analyses) and oxygen uptake is assumed to have evolved to supply the body tissues at the required rate. However, emergent scaling rules are sensitive to input parameters, especially to the relationship between the scaling of metabolism and oxygen uptake rate at the surface. Our results illustrate the utility of an optimality approach for developing predictions and identifying key areas for empirical research on the allometry of diving behavior.

  • Increased expression of leukocyte Ig-like receptor-1 and activating role of UL18 in the response to cytomegalovirus infection
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: J Immunol. - : The American Association of Immunologists. - 0022-1767 .- 1550-6606. ; 178:6, s. 3536-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NK and T cells are important for combating CMV infection. Some NK and T cells express leukocyte Ig-like receptor-1 (LIR-1), an inhibitory receptor recognizing MHC class I and the CMV-encoded homolog UL18. We previously demonstrated an early increase in LIR-1-expressing blood lymphocytes in lung-transplanted patients later developing CMV disease. We now show that NK and T cells account for the observed LIR-1 augmentation. Coincubation of PBMC from CMV-seropositive donors with virus-infected lung fibroblasts led to a T cell-dependent secretion of IFN-gamma, produced mainly by LIR-1(+) T cells and by NK cells. Cytokine production during coculture with fibroblasts infected with virus containing the UL18 gene was augmented compared with the UL18 deletion virus, suggesting a stimulatory role for UL18. However, purified UL18Fc proteins inhibited IFN-gamma production of LIR-1(+) T cells. We propose that cytokine production in the transplant induces NK and T cells to express LIR-1, which may predispose to CMV disease by MHC/LIR-1-mediated suppression. Although the UL18/LIR-1 interaction could inhibit T cell responses, this unlikely plays a role in response to infected cells. Instead, our data point to an activating role for viral UL18 during infection, where indirect intracellular effects cannot be excluded.

  • The PAMELA space experiment
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 44th Rencontres de Moriond - 2009 Electroweak Interactions and Unified Theories, EW 2009. - : Gioi Publishers. ; , s. 317-324
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 15th of June 2006, the PAMELA satellite-borne experiment was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome and it has been collecting data since July 2006. The apparatus comprises a time-of-flight system, a silicon-microstrip magnetic spectrometer, a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter, an anticoincidence system, a shower tail counter scintillator and a neutron detector. The combination of these devices allows precision studies of the charged cosmic radiation to be conducted over a wide energy range (100 MeV - 100's GeV) with high statistics. The primary scientific goal is the measurement of the antiproton and positron energy spectrum in order to search for exotic sources, such as dark matter particle annihilations. PAMELA is also searching for primordial antinuclei (anti-helium) and testing cosmic-ray propagation models through precise measurements of the anti-particle energy spectrum and precision studies of light nuclei and their isotopes. Moreover, PAMELA is investigating phenomena connected with solar and earth physics.
