  • Leading by example? EU citizens’ preferences for climate leadership
  • 2022
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For global problems like climate change, strong international agreements are difficult to achieve. Alternative solutions might therefore be necessary. In this paper, we study the support for climate leadership in seven European countries. Climate leadership means that an individual country takes the lead by decreasing its carbon emissions above its level of commitment in the current EU agreement and with the intention of inspiring other countries to do likewise. Overall, we find that at realistic cost levels, a majority of people oppose their country taking the lead, and most do not expect that taking the lead will result in other countries following suit. The lack of support is caused by expectations that such leadership will result in other countries behaving as free riders. We do, however, find evidence of preferences for conditional leadership: People are more positive about their country taking the lead if assured that other countries will follow. These preferences are stronger among those who identify as leftwing. Moreover, citizens in smaller countries are more pessimistic that other countries would follow their country’s lead and more sensitive to the response of other EU countries.

  • The Climate Decade: Changing Attitudes on Three Continents
  • 2020
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We examine how attitudes and willingness to pay (WTP) for climate policies have changed over the past decade in the United States, China, and Sweden. All three countries exhibit an increased willingness to pay for climate mitigation. Ten years ago, Sweden had a larger fraction of believers in anthropogenic climate change and a higher WTP for mitigation, but today the national averages are more similar. Although we find convergence in public support for climate policy across countries, there is considerable divergence in climate attitudes and preferences within countries, particularly the United States. Political polarization explains part of this divergence.

    • Using identical surveys a decade apart, we examine how attitudes and willingness to pay (WTP) for climate policies have changed in the United States, China, and Sweden. All three countries exhibit an increased willingness to pay for climate mitigation. Ten years ago, Sweden had a larger fraction of believers in anthropogenic climate change and a higher WTP for mitigation, but today the national averages are more similar. Although we find convergence in public support for climate policy across countries, there is considerable divergence in both WTP and climate attitudes within countries. Political polarization explains part of this divergence.

  • Effects of a Vegetarian Diet on Cardiometabolic Risk Factors, Gut Microbiota, and Plasma Metabolome in Subjects With Ischemic Heart Disease: A Randomized, Crossover Study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Heart Association. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 2047-9980. ; 9:18, s. e016518-e016518
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background A vegetarian diet (VD) may reduce future cardiovascular risk in patients with ischemic heart disease. Methods and Results A randomized crossover study was conducted in subjects with ischemic heart disease, assigned to 4-week intervention periods of isocaloric VD and meat diet (MD) with individually designed diet plans, separated by a 4-week washout period. The primary outcome was difference in oxidized low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) between diets. Secondary outcomes were differences in cardiometabolic risk factors, quality of life, gut microbiota, fecal short-chain and branched-chain fatty acids, and plasma metabolome. Of 150 eligible patients, 31 (21%) agreed to participate, and 27 (87%) participants completed the study. Mean oxidized LDL-C (-2.73 U/L), total cholesterol (-5.03 mg/dL), LDL-C (-3.87 mg/dL), and body weight (-0.67 kg) were significantly lower with the VD than with the MD. Differences between VD and MD were observed in the relative abundance of several microbe genera within the families Ruminococcaceae, Lachnospiraceae, and Akkermansiaceae. Plasma metabolites, including l-carnitine, acylcarnitine metabolites, and phospholipids, differed in subjects consuming VD and MD. The effect on oxidized LDL-C in response to the VD was associated with a baseline gut microbiota composition dominated by several genera of Ruminococcaceae. Conclusions The VD in conjunction with optimal medical therapy reduced levels of oxidized LDL-C, improved cardiometabolic risk factors, and altered the relative abundance of gut microbes and plasma metabolites in patients with ischemic heart disease. Our results suggest that composition of the gut microbiota at baseline may be related to the reduction of oxidized LDL-C observed with the VD. • Penile cancer : long-term infectious and thromboembolic complications following lymph node dissection - a population-based study (Sweden)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0284-186X .- 1651-226X. ; 62:5, s. 458-464
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: To assess the long-term risks of infectious and thromboembolic events following inguinal (ILND) and pelvic (PLND) lymph node dissection in men with penile cancer.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 364 men subjected to ILND with or without PLND for penile cancer between 2000 and 2012 were identified in the Swedish National Penile Cancer Register. Each patient was matched based on age and county of residence with six penile cancer-free men. The Swedish Cancer Register and other population-based registers were used to retrieve information on treatment and hospitalisation for selected infectious and thromboembolic events. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard models with multiple imputation.RESULTS: The risk of infectious events remained increased for more than five years postoperatively in men with penile cancer compared with matched controls. The palpable nodal disease was the only predictor of these events, with risk increasing with the cN stage. The HR at one, three and five years and six months postoperatively was 8.60 (95% CI 5.16-14.34), 4.02 (95% CI 2.65-6.09) and 1.93 (95% CI 1.11-3.38), respectively. An increased risk of thromboembolic events persisted for three years postoperatively. The HR at one and three years postoperatively was 13.51 (95% CI 6.53-27.93) and 2.12 (95% CI 1.07-4.20). The results correspond well with the over-prescription of anticoagulants observed during this period. An association with bulky disease (cN3) was observed.CONCLUSIONS: Lymph node dissection for penile cancer is associated with an increased risk of infectious and thromboembolic events. The findings of this population-based study show that the risks of these events remain increased more than five years for infectious and three years for thromboembolic events. Improved awareness of long-term complications following ILND is of importance both among patients and care givers to ensure early detection and treatment.

  • Considering KNIME Workflows as Shareable Resources : An Example from ‘Trolling the Library’
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Presented at HumInfra Conference (HiC) 2024, Gothenburg.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As the growing influence of the radical right turns cultural institutions into political symbols (Harding, 2021), online forums and social media are key venues for antagonistic outbursts directed at public libraries (Carlsson, Hanell & Hansson 2022). Trolling the Library aims to explore radical right digital attacks against public libraries, and is currently piloting different methods to analyse online comments and news items from the website SamNytt. This contribution outlines one intended deliverable of the project: a shareable workflow for the low-code tool KNIME (KoNstanz Information MinEr). Low-code tools play an important role in making data analysis and visualization accessible to researchers and students with limited experience, or interest, in programming (see De Mauro, Marzoni & Walter, 2021). While low-code tools do introduce closed-box issues, they can still be considered important steppingstones towards computational approaches (Tyrkkö & Ihrmark, submitted). An additional benefit is the shareability of the workflow resulting from designing the method pipeline in tools such as KNIME or Orange.  The specific workflow resulting from Trolling the Library contains sentiment analysis and topic modeling components. While limited in scope, the discussion of the workflow highlights both the benefits and drawbacks of low-code workflows as potential shareable resources for the digital humanities. This contribution focuses on the ease of use, possible obstacles from an unfamiliar user’s perspective, and the availability of appropriate resources for the platform.   Works cited: Carlsson, H., Hanell, F., & Hansson, J. • Trolling the Library : the digital threat to the democratic mission of public libraries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Presented at Big Data 2023, November 30th - December 1st, Växjö.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In Sweden, the growing influence of the radical right have turned cultural institutions into political symbols in an emerging ‘culture war’ (Harding, 2021). Carlsson, Hanell & Hansson (2022) show how digital forums and social media play a significant part in orchestrating the ideologically laden conflicts and confrontations that public libraries are currently facing. Digitally mediated threats from the radical right may obstruct the statutory mission of the institution to promote democracy, but knowledge about how such threats develop and unfold, as well as the relation between online interactions and offline events (Scrivens, Davies & Frank, 2020), is lacking. This prompts an investigation of the digital environments where supporters of radical right-wing ideas interact, share thoughts, construct collective identities, and coordinate actions towards libraries.Methodologically, the pilot study explores user comments on online news websites (Landert 2014), applying a data-driven approach informed by sentiment analysis and topic modelling (TM) testing both conventional lexicon-based sentiment scoring and LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) topic modelling, and more recent BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) modelling. For purposes of transparency and easy replicability, we carry out the analyses in the open-source environment KNIME (Konstanz Information Miner; see Ihrmark & Tyrkkö 2023).The dataset of the pilot study contains 561 comments taken from 138 different articles published between 2019 and 2023 on the SamNytt website, the main media outlet for the Swedish radical right. The articles were selected by using the search term “bibliotek” in the site’s search function. The comments were made by 338 different user accounts, with a low number of individual accounts making more than 5 comments. An ongoing analysis suggests that the frequency and temporality of comments and upvotes provide a window into the processes shaping radical right-wing digital attacks that result in tangible consequences for public libraries.

  • Offending trajectories from childhood to retirement age : Findings from the Stockholm birth cohort study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of criminal justice. - 0047-2352 .- 1873-6203. ; 91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: The current study explores heterogeneity in the aggregate age-crime curve. This is achieved by analyzing to what extent there is empirical support for the existence of pivotal typologies in developmental and life-course criminology, as well as whether there is any heterogeneity in trajectories among adult-onset offenders (first recorded for crime at age 25 or later). Methods: Data were drawn from a population-representative birth cohort of 14,608 males and females, followed prospectively in registers from age nine to 64. Trajectories of antisocial and criminal behavior were identified by means of group-based trajectory modelling. Results: A small group with a high prevalence of crime across the life course, among both males and females, was found. Furthermore, a large proportion of offenders were adult-onset offenders, and there was meaningful heterogeneity in their criminal trajectories. However, the data did not lend much support to the hypothesized phenomenon of late-blooming.Conclusion: There is meaningful heterogeneity in the aggregate age-crime curve, including trajectories that resonate fairly well with predictions derived from Moffitt's taxonomy. Nevertheless, there are firm reasons for theorizing proximate causes for the onset and continuation of crime beyond emerging adulthood.
