  • Fabrication and characterization of diffractive optical elements in InP for monolithic integration with surface-emitting components
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Applied Optics. - 1559-128X .- 2155-3165. ; 39:3, s. 398-401
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the fabrication and subsequent characterization of binary diffractive optical elements (DOE's) in InP for operation at 1.3 mu m. Fresnel lenses of different focal, lengths and a DOE that splits and focuses an incident beam into a 1 x 4 array of spots (optical fan-out) were fabricated. We realized the surface reliefs by patterning resist, using electron-beam lithography and etching with a chemically assisted ion beam, which produced well-defined patterns with smooth sidewalls and little if no surface roughness. The measured efficiency for the lenses was 36%. For the fan-out element the efficiency and the uniformity error were 26% and 30%, respectively. Spot sizes small as 16 mu m were measured.

  • Impaired kidney graft survival is associated with the TNF-alpha genotype
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transplantation. - 0041-1337. ; 78:1, s. 117-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The TNF2 allele at position -308 of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha gene is associated with high TNF production. The purpose was to study the association of this gene polymorphism with rejection episodes and graft survival after kidney transplantation. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of transplant outcomes of patients who only had been treated with one single form of immunosuppression consisting of cyclosporine, azathioprine, and prednisolon was performed. RESULTS: We found that 115 (73%) patients had the TNF1/TNF1 genotype, whereas 42 (27%) were TNF2 positive. There was no difference in the overall acute rejection frequency between these two groups (50% in each), but our data showed a non-significant tendency towards a higher frequency of steroid resistant rejections in the TNF2 positive group (57% vs. 40%). There was no significant difference in graft survival between the two genotype groups, although an early tendency towards worse survival was seen in TNF2 recipients. However, the TNF2 positive recipients with rejection episodes had far worse graft survival compared with the TNF1/TNF1 recipients with rejection episodes (P<0.02). No difference was seen between the two genotype groups in patients without rejection episodes. CONCLUSION: Our data propose that potentially high TNF producers with the TNF2 allele do not have an increased risk for rejection episodes, but if rejection episodes occur, they have a significantly increased risk for early graft loss. TNF production may intensify rejection, but is not a primary factor for the induction of such acute immune activation.

  • "SOLVENT": development of a reversible solar-screen glazing system
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Energy and Buildings. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-7788 .- 1872-6178. ; 36:5, s. 467-480
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Preliminary experiments with a novel glazing system developed at the Desert Architecture and Urban Planning Unit of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel indicated that it may provide improved visual and thermal performance in buildings with large glazed areas located in sunny regions, regardless of orientation. In winter, it reduces glare, local over-heating and damage to furnishings caused by exposure to direct solar radiation, with only a small reduction in solar space heating. In summer, it reduces the penetration of unwanted radiation without obstructing the view through the window, to an extent that may render external shading devices unnecessary. The SOLVENT project was contracted to complete the development of the glazing system, which is based on the concept of converting short-wave solar radiation to convective heat and long wave radiation. The glazing system was modeled and evaluated experimentally; a suitable frame was developed for it; and a design tool required for its application was developed. The current paper reports on physical modeling and experimental evaluation of the glazing system.

  • Bone mass and body composition of adult women with congenital virilizing 21-hydroxylase deficiency after glucocorticoid treatment since infancy
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: European journal of endocrinology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0804-4643 .- 1479-683X. ; 143:5, s. 667-671
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To study bone mass, body composition and androgenic/anabolic activity in adult women with virilizing congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) treated with glucocorticoids since infancy and to relate this to the postmenarcheal glucocorticoid impact. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirteen adult women with virilizing CAH treated with gluco- and mineralocorticoids but otherwise medicine-free were investigated with respect to bone mineral content, body composition by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and endocrine status. In addition an index of accumulated postmenarcheal exogenous glucocorticoid impact was calculated. Seven of the patients had regular menstrual periods, and six were oligomenorrheic but responded with withdrawal bleedings on cyclic progestagens. The data for the patients were compared with those of age-matched healthy reference subjects. RESULTS: In spite of their shorter stature, CAH patients were significantly heavier and had a significantly higher body mass index and fat/lean body mass ratio than the controls. Their bone mineral area density (BMD) was significantly lower than that of the controls. Serum concentrations of androgens were subnormal in all except two of the patients. Strong negative associations were found between BMD and the calculated index of accumulated postmenarcheal glucocorticoid dose but not between BMD and circulating androgen levels. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that glucocorticoids were administered in excess in most of the patients, resulting in subnormal levels of adrenocortical androgens, increased body fat and bone demineralization. Increased catabolic activity due to hypercortisolism rather than decreased androgenic/anabolic steroids is probably the major cause of the subnormal BMD in the treated CAH patients.
