  • Potential clinical use of the EDTA-infusion test
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Biochemistry. - 0939-4974. ; 31:6, s. 8-353
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The introduction of assays for the intact parathyrin (parathyroid hormone) has dramatically improved the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. However, in some patients with mild or intermittent hypercalcaemia, when plasma concentrations of intact parathyrin may be within the normal reference concentrations, the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism may still be problematic. In these patients, the EDTA-infusion test is of potential value, as it also might be in patients with equivocal operative findings.

  • The Vaasa Migmatitic Complex (Svecofennian Orogen, Finland): Buildup of a LP-HT Dome During Nuna Assembly
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Tectonics. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0278-7407 .- 1944-9194. ; 9:3, s. 1-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tectonic evolution of the Paleoproterozoic Vaasa migmatitic complex (VMC) in the central part of the Svecofennian accretionary orogen is deciphered using aeromagnetic and gravity maps, deep seismic and magnetotelluric profiles, and structural and metamorphic data. The VMC is a semicircular structure with migmatitic rim and granitic core composed of several subdomes. It evolved in three main tectonic events (D1–D3). The D1 event (ca. 1.89–1.88 Ga) corresponds to the stacking of supracrustal rocks and the formation of an inverted metamorphic gradient. Anatexis at LP‐HT metamorphic conditions enabled the material to flow. The D2 event (ca. 1.88–1.87 Ga) corresponds to large‐scale folding of the partially molten crust within an orocline. It is marked by folds with an E‐W vertical axial planar foliation. The late D3 event resulted from mass redistribution owing to mechanical instabilities within the hinge of the orocline. It is marked by vertical shearing (ca. 1.87–1.85 Ga) in the marginal parts of the complex and along the granitoid subdomes. The seismic reflection profile (FIRE 3a) and magnetotelluric profiles (MT‐PE and MT‐B2) image large‐scale D1 stacking structures within an accretionary prism. Near vertical breaks in crustal‐scale reflectivity and conductivity models are interpreted as D3 shear zones. The VMC is an example of early mass and heat transfer within a collage of hot supracrustal rocks in an accretionary belt. Partial melting enhanced the flow of material, the production, and rise of magma as well as exhumation, marked by magmatic domes in the hinge of the orocline.

  • Review on adhesives and surface treatments for structural applications : Recent developments on sustainability and implementation for metal and composite substrates
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Materials. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1944 .- 1996-1944. ; 13:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using adhesives for connection technology has many benefits. It is cost-efficient, fast, and allows homogeneous stress distribution between the bonded surfaces. This paper gives an overview on the current state of knowledge regarding the technologically important area of adhesive materials, as well as on emergent related technologies. It is expected to fill some of the technological gaps between the existing literature and industrial reality, by focusing at opportunities and challenges in the adhesives sector, on sustainable and eco-friendly chemistries that enable bio-derived adhesives, recycling and debonding, as well as giving a brief overview on the surface treatment approaches involved in the adhesive application process, with major focus on metal and polymer matrix composites. Finally, some thoughts on the connection between research and development (R&D) efforts, industry standards and regulatory aspects are given. It contributes to bridge the gap between industry and research institutes/academy. Examples from the aeronautics industry are often used since many technological advances in this industry are innovation precursors for other industries. This paper is mainly addressed to chemists, materials scientists, materials engineers, and decision-makers. © 2020 by the authors.

  • The outcomes of residential squatting activism in the context of municipalism and capitalism in Madrid and Barcelona (2015–2019)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Urban Affairs. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0735-2166 .- 1467-9906. ; 45:1, s. 65-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the impact of the Spanish housing movement on policies regarding residential squatting of municipalist coalitions in Madrid and Barcelona. Combining literatures on social movement outcomes, new municipalism, and the importance of capitalism for social movement studies, we address the following research questions: How has the Spanish housing movement framed its claims regarding residential squatting? How have these claims impacted policies in Madrid and Barcelona between 2015 and 2019? What explains the differences—if any—in these outcomes? We conclude that—following the 2008 global financial crisis—activists have reframed squatting as a legitimate response to unjust evictions and foreclosures in neoliberal political economies. While this has prompted support from municipalist councilors in both cities, gains have been more substantial in Barcelona. We explain this from variations in political alliances and urban political economies. Our analysis underscores the importance of capitalism in urban and housing movement studies.

  • Collective but Diverse: Preschool Teachers Networking to Develop Toddler Mathematics
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Mathematics Teacher Education and Development. - : Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA). - 1442-3901. ; 19:3, s. 3-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on professional development among teachers within a Swedish national network on toddler mathematics education. The activities within this network can be understood as participant-oriented collective professional development based on a knowledge of practice approach. An inventory of toddler mathematics was performed within this network through observations of authentic mathematical activities. The inventory made diversity in the participating teachers’ perceptions of toddler mathematics visible; different activities were labelled similarly and opposite, similar activities were labelled differently. The inventory made clear the need for theoretical influence and discussions in practical inquiry. The addition of theoretical notions made previous invisible diversity among the network members visible, and strengthened the opportunities for further collective professional development. Diversity becoming visible contributed to the knowledge of practice approach, as well as the development of the professional language of the participating teachers.

  • A proposed dyno bench test cycle to study particle emissions from disc brakes
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In urban areas, the impact of on-road vehicles on particulate matter is well acknowledged. Particulates originating from vehicles come not only from the engine exhaust emissions, but also from wear processes in brakes and between tires and road surface. In the EU, these non-exhaust vehicle emissions equal approximately 50 % of the exhaust emissions of PM10 (particles with aerodynamic diameters smaller than 10 μm).To reduce the air pollution, tail pipe emissions are today regulated. Detailed test protocols for engine exhaust verification and certification, using different driving cycles, are available. However, there are no formal test protocols for particulate emissions from disc brakes. Here a test cycle for disc brakes is proposed considering a typical European car usage. It consists of nine different braking blocks, starting from a burning-in and involving town, country road, highway and hill descend conditions. To evaluate the test cycle, a front brake assembly was set-up in a shaft-type inertia dynamometer. Particle emissions were continuously registered using a particle counter, which can measure particulate matter from ultrafine to coarse sizeThe conclusion is that the proposed test cycle can be used to evaluate particulate emissions from disc brakes, and the next step towards a test protocol should be to improve the measurements using a clean environment around the brake assembly and isokinetic sampling.

  • Delineating Ligand-Receptor Interactions and the Design of Subtype Selective Galanin Receptor Ligands
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We now celebrate that it is 30 years since galanin was first isolated. During these three decades galanin has been identified in numerous tissues and physiological processes, and in an abundant number of species. In the nervous system galanin primarily displays a modulatory role. The galaninergic system consists of a number of bioactive peptides with a highlyplastic expression pattern and three different receptors, GalR1-GalR3. The lack of receptor subtype selective ligands and antibodies have severely hampered the characterization of this system. Therefore, most of the knowledgehas been drawn from experiments with transgenic animals, which has givensome major conclusions, despite the risk of inducing compensatory effects inthese animal studies. Therefore, the production of subtype selective ligandsis of great importance to delineate the galanin system and slowly experimental data from receptor subtype selective ligand trials is emerging. This thesis aims at studying galanin receptor-ligand interactions and to increase and improve the utilized tools in the galanin research field, especially the development of novel galanin receptor subtype selective ligands. Paper I demonstrates the potential to N-terminally extend galanin analogues and the successful development of a GalR2 selective ligand. In addition, a cell line stably expressing GalR3 was developed to improve and simplify future evaluations of receptor subtype selective galanin ligands. Paper II extends the number of GalR2 selective ligands and shows that i.c.v. administration of galanin receptor ligands stimulates food intake through GalR1. Paper III demonstrates the successful development of a mixed GalR1/GalR2 agonist without any detectable interaction with GalR3. Subsequently, this peptide was used to delineate which receptor subtype mediatesthe neuroprotective effects of galanin in the CA3 region of hippocampus. Furthermore, a robust protocol for detection of receptor activation was developed to ease the detection of the relative potency of novel ligands at the three galanin receptor subtypes. Paper IV describes the finding of several essential amino acids for ligand interaction in GalR3 through the performance of an L-alanine mutagenesis study. A constructed in silico homology model of GalR3 confirmed and extended these findings. In conclusion, this thesis provides a novel design strategy for galanin receptor ligands and increases the understanding of ligand interactions with the GalR3. Furthermore, published ligands together with new galanin analogues have proven to be highly receptor specific, thus implicating that a future delineation of the galaninergic system as a therapeutic target is possible.

  • Carbon Dioxide in Supermarket Refrigeration
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis theoretically and experimentally investigates different aspects of the application of CO2 in supermarket refrigeration. Theoretical analysis has been performed using computer simulation models developed to simulate CO2 indirect, NH3/CO2 cascade, CO2 trans-critical and direct expansion (DX) R404A systems. The models supported the selection of the CO2 system solutions to be tested experimentally and facilitated the design of NH3/CO2 cascade and trans-critical systems test rigs. Performance evaluation and systems’ optimizations have also been carried out. In order to verify the findings of the theoretical analysis an experimental evaluation has been performed whereby a scaled-down medium size supermarket has been built in a laboratory environment. NH3/CO2 cascade and trans-critical systems have been tested and compared to a conventional R404A system installed in the same laboratory environment. Experimental findings have been compared to the computer simulation models. In supermarket refrigeration applications, safety is a major concern because of the large number of people that might be affected in the event of leakage. Therefore, a computer simulation model has been developed to perform calculations of the resulting concentration levels arising from different scenarios for leakage accidents in the supermarket. The model has been used to validate some of the risks associated with using CO2 in the application of supermarket refrigeration. Results of the experiments and the computer simulation models showed good agreement and suggest that the NH3/CO2 cascade system is a more efficient solution than the analyzed conventional ones for supermarket refrigeration. On the other hand, CO2 trans-critical solutions have efficiencies comparable to the conventional systems analyzed, with potential for improvements in the trans-critical systems. From a safety point of view, the analysis of the calculations’ results clearly shows that using CO2 in supermarket refrigeration does not create exceptional health risks for customers and workers in the shopping area. Studies conducted in this thesis prove that the CO2 systems investigated are efficient solutions for supermarket refrigeration.
