  • Not Speaking or Acting as Anti-Social Feminism and Unbecoming Woman : A Queer Reading of Silence in Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s Tony Trilogy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Barnboken. - : The Swedish Institute for Children's Books. - 0347-772X .- 2000-4389. ; 45, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to explore the queer possibilities of the silence in the depiction of the protagonist’s love life in Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s Tony trilogy (1922–1926). The silence in the trilogy is manifested through absence: the theme of “ingenting” (nothing), the protagonist not speaking or acting, and the aesthetic that is created by interruptions in the protagonist’s dialogue, inner monologue, and narration. The analysis focuses on three passages: a depiction of an encounter between Tony and one of her suitors, her relative Frank Maclean, in Tonys läroår (Tony’s Apprenticeship, 1924); the ending of the trilogy in Tonys sista läroår (Tony’s Last Apprenticeship, 1926); and an epilogue to the trilogy, which was never included in it but later published in the second, expanded edition of En dagdriverskas anteckningar (The Notes of a Flâneuse, 1934). They are contextualised with references to the trilogy as a whole and compared to Krusenstjerna’s previous novels Ninas dagbok (The Diary of Nina, 1917) and Helenas första kärlek (Helena’s First Love, 1918). The method is a close reading with instead of against the grain, focusing on queer aspects of depictions of heterosexuality. It draws on theory belonging to the anti-social turn of queer studies and queer temporality studies. My conclusion is that Tony not speaking or acting can be read as anti-social feminism, with Tony as an anti-social feminist subject. Her queer life schedule can be interpreted as unbecoming woman. The “nothing,” and implicitly the creativity, that her passivity leads to accomplishes the opposite of patriarchal and chrononormative structures. The narrative and its ending are queer in the sense that they refuse to cohere and to fulfil demands for a happy, emancipatory ending.

  • A tunable decellularized liver-based hybrid bioink
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: MicroTAS 2021 - 25th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences. - : Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society. ; , s. 281-282
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Decellularized extracellular matrix is a tissue-specific biomaterial that recapitulates the complexity of the inherent tissue environment to elicit cellular response. Here, a multi-material decellularized liver (dLM)-based bioink with gelatin is developed and polyethylene glycol crosslinking is used to enhance the viscoelasticity of the dLM. We evaluated the necessity of a post-printing secondary cross-linker mushroom tyrosinase to improve robustness and long term stability. We further demonstrate it's biocompatibility using liver specific gene analysis of HepG2 cells.

  • Increasing Road Traffic Throughput Through Dynamic Traffic Accident Risk Mitigation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transportation Technologies. - : Scientific Research Publishing, Inc.. - 2160-0481 .- 2160-0473. ; 5:4, s. 223-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The introduction of Vehicular ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) leads to the possibility to re-evaluate many traditional functions and views of road traffic networks. The ability for vehicles and infrastructure to commu- nicate and collaborate will enable many novel solutions for problems as diverse as collision avoidance and traffic management with the view of re- ducing traffic congestion, increasing the effectiveness of logistics systems etc. In this paper we introduce a novel framework that utilises VANET in- formation to share information about risk factors among road occupants and infrastructure. We introduce the concept of risk limits as a means of traffic accident risk mitigation, whereby vehicles need to adjust their be- haviour to maintain a given level of risk. We discuss determination of risk values and detail this process using the NSW traffic accident database. We show how the effects on risk of particular vehicular behaviours such as speed and headway can be calculated and use these results to modify vehicle behaviour in real time to maintain a predefined risk limit. Exper- iments are carried out using the Paramics microsimulator. Our results show that it is possible to reduce the accident rate among vehicles while at the same time increasing road network throughput by exploiting the variation in risk between vehicles.

  • Divine (In)Justice in Charles Maturin’s Melmoth the Wanderer
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In his introduction to the Oxford World’s Classics edition of Melmoth, Chris Baldick suggests the following: “When … Melmoth defends the Protestant view of the Bible against the Catholic Church, and we recall that this uncharacteristic behaviour is being related to us in a Jewish text transmitted by a Catholic, something more is involved than mere clumsiness or forgetfulness: an inadvertent dissolution of distinctions is taking place in which the same voice can utter sacrilegious sarcasms and pious platitudes almost in the same breath, erasing the clear line that was expected to lie between them in an ‘improving’ work of fiction” (xvi). The Irish context of Maturin’s self-deconstructing project is decisive. The Protestant rhetoric only strengthens the Catholic resistance in the way it would in an Irish political context (applied power always provokes opposition). In the novel, the Protestant impulse that Maturin at least seems to be driven by is a sterness that only functions as a catalyst for the dissolving of distinctions that Baldick draws attention to. The Gothic outcome is a display of the only justice, the fate of desire. The sought purity of the Panoptic eye becomes something like the eye in Georges Bataille’s Story of an Eye: “‘Put it up my arse, Sir Edmund,’ Simone shouted. And Sir Edmund delicately glided the eye between her buttocks” (66). This paper examines the functioning of (in)justice in Melmoth, mainly in its theological dimensions.

  • Trends, Projections, and Regional Disparities of Maternal Mortality in Africa (1990-2030): An ARIMA Forecasting Approach
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: EPIDEMIOLOGIA. - 2673-3986. ; 4:3, s. 322-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) (2015-2030) focused on the reduction in maternal mortality, monitoring and forecasting maternal mortality rates (MMRs) in regions like Africa is crucial for health strategy planning by policymakers, international organizations, and NGOs. We collected maternal mortality rates per 100,000 births from the World Bank database between 1990 and 2015. Joinpoint regression was applied to assess trends, and the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model was used on 1990-2015 data to forecast the MMRs for the next 15 years. We also used the Holt method and the machine-learning Prophet Forecasting Model. The study found a decline in MMRs in Africa with an average annual percentage change (APC) of -2.6% (95% CI -2.7; -2.5). North Africa reported the lowest MMR, while East Africa experienced the sharpest decline. The region-specific ARIMA models predict that the maternal mortality rate (MMR) in 2030 will vary across regions, ranging from 161 deaths per 100,000 births in North Africa to 302 deaths per 100,000 births in Central Africa, averaging 182 per 100,000 births for the continent. Despite the observed decreasing trend in maternal mortality rate (MMR), the MMR in Africa remains relatively high. The results indicate that MMR in Africa will continue to decrease by 2030. However, no region of Africa will likely reach the SDG target.
