  • Vibronic coherence contributes to photocurrent generation in organic semiconductor heterojunction diodes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2041-1723. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Charge separation dynamics after the absorption of a photon is a fundamental process relevant both for photosynthetic reaction centers and artificial solar conversion devices. It has been proposed that quantum coherence plays a role in the formation of charge carriers in organic photovoltaics, but experimental proofs have been lacking. Here we report experimental evidence of coherence in the charge separation process in organic donor/acceptor heterojunctions, in the form of low frequency oscillatory signature in the kinetics of the transient absorption and nonlinear two-dimensional photocurrent spectroscopy. The coherence plays a decisive role in the initial 200 femtoseconds as we observe distinct experimental signatures of coherent photocurrent generation. This coherent process breaks the energy barrier limitation for charge formation, thus competing with excitation energy transfer. The physics may inspire the design of new photovoltaic materials with high device performance, which explore the quantum effects in the next-generation optoelectronic applications.

  • China's Terrestrial Carbon Sink Over 2010–2015 Constrained by Satellite Observations of Atmospheric CO2 and Land Surface Variables
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences. - 2169-8953. ; 127:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnitude and distribution of China's terrestrial carbon sink remain uncertain due to insufficient constraints at large scales, whereby satellite data offer great potential for reducing the uncertainty. Here, we present two carbon sink estimates for China constrained either by satellite CO2 column concentrations (XCO2) within the Global Carbon Assimilation System or by remotely sensed soil moisture and Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) in addition to in situ CO2 observations within the Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation System. They point to a moderate size of carbon sinks of 0.34 ± 0.14 (mean ± unc.) and 0.43 ± 0.09 PgC/yr during 2010–2015, which are supported by an inventory-based estimate for forest and soil carbon sink (0.26 PgC/yr) and fall in the range of contemporary ensemble atmospheric inversions (0.25–0.48 PgC/yr). They also agree reasonably well on interannual variations, which reflect the carbon sink anomalies induced by regional droughts in southwest China. Furthermore, their spatial distributions are broadly consistent that of the forest inventory-based estimate, indicating that the largest carbon sinks locate in central and eastern China. Their estimates for forest carbon sink coincide fairly well with the inventory-based estimate across different regions, especially when aggregated to the north and south of China. Although enhanced recently by afforestation, China's carbon sink was also significantly weakened by regional droughts, which were often not fully represented in previous in situ CO2-based inversions due to insufficient observations. Our results suggest that satellite-based atmospheric CO2 and land surface observations are vital in characterizing terrestrial net carbon fluxes at regional scales.

  • An Efficient Deep-Subwavelength Second Harmonic Nanoantenna Based on Surface Plasmon-Coupled Dilute Nitride GaNP Nanowires
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 21:8, s. 3426-3434
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-index semiconductor nanoantennae represent a powerful platform for nonlinear photon generation. Devices with reduced footprints are pivotal for higher integration capacity and energy efficiency in photonic integrated circuitry (PIC). Here, we report on a deep subwavelength nonlinear antenna based on dilute nitride GaNP nanowires (NWs), whose second harmonic generation (SHG) shows a 5-fold increase by incorporating similar to 0.45% of nitrogen (N), in comparison with GaP counterpart. Further integrating with a gold (Au) thin film-based hybrid cavity achieves a significantly boosted SHG output by a factor of similar to 380, with a nonlinear conversion efficiency up to 9.4 x 10(-6) W-1. In addition, high-density zinc blende (ZB) twin phases were found to tailor the nonlinear radiation profile via dipolar interference, resulting in a highly symmetric polarimetric pattern well-suited for coupling with polarization nano-optics. Our results manifest dilute nitride nanoantenna as promising building blocks for future chip-based nonlinear photonic technology.

  • Effect of Crystal Symmetry on the Spin States of Fe3+ and Vibration Modes in Lead-free Double-Perovskite Cs2AgBi(Fe)Br-6
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1948-7185 .- 1948-7185. ; 11:12, s. 4873-4878
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show by electron spin resonance (ESR) and Raman spectroscopies that the crystal phase transition of the lead-free double-perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 has a profound symmetry-breaking effect on the high spin states of, for example, a transition-metal ion Fe3+ and the vibrational modes. It lifts their degeneracy when the crystal undergoes the cubic-tetragonal phase transition, splitting the six-fold degenerate S = 5/2 state of Fe3+ to three Kramer doublets and the enharmonic breathing mode T-g of the MBr6 octahedra (M = Ag, Bi, Fe) into E-g + A(g). The magnitudes of both spin and Raman line splitting are shown to directly correlate with the strength of the tetragonal strain field. This work, in turn, demonstrates the power of the ESR and Raman spectroscopies in probing structural phase transitions and in providing in-depth information on the interplay between the structural, spin, and vibrational properties of lead-free double perovskites, a newly emerging and promising class of materials for low-cost and high-efficiency photovoltaics and optoelectronics.

  • Anomalously Strong Second‐Harmonic Generation in GaAs Nanowires via Crystal‐Structure Engineering
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - Weinheim, Germany : Wiley-V C H Verlag GMBH. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028. ; 31:36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • GaAs-based semiconductors are highly attractive for diverse nonlinear photonic applications, owing to their non-centrosymmetric crystal structure and huge nonlinear optical coefficients. Nanostructured semiconductors, for example, nanowires (NWs), offer rich possibilities to tailor nonlinear optical properties and further enhance photonic device performance. In this study, it is demonstrated highly efficient second-harmonic generation in subwavelength wurtzite (WZ) GaAs NWs, reaching 2.5 × 10−5 W−1, which is about seven times higher than their zincblende counterpart. This enhancement is shown to be predominantly caused by an axial built-in electric field induced by spontaneous polarization in the WZ lattice via electric field-induced second-order nonlinear susceptibility and can be controlled optically and potentially electrically. The findings, therefore, provide an effective strategy for enhancing and manipulating the nonlinear optical response in subwavelength NWs by utilizing lattice engineering.

  • Effects of Bi incorporation on recombination processes in wurtzite GaBiAs nanowires
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 31:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of Bi incorporation on the recombination process in wurtzite (WZ) GaBiAs nanowires are studied by employing micro-photoluminescence (mu-PL) and time-resolved PL spectroscopies. It is shown that at low temperatures (T amp;lt; 75 K) Bi-induced localization effects cause trapping of excitons within band-tail states, which prolongs their lifetime and suppresses surface nonradiative recombination (SNR). With increasing temperature, the trapped excitons become delocalized and their lifetime rapidly shortens due to facilitated SNR. Furthermore, Bi incorporation in the GaBiAs NW is found to have a minor influence on the surface states responsible for SNR.

  • Ion-modulated radical doping of spiro-OMeTAD for more efficient and stable perovskite solar cells
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Science. - : AMER ASSOC ADVANCEMENT SCIENCE. - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 377:6605, s. 495-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Record power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been obtained with the organic hole transporter 2,2,7,7-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenyl-amine)9,9-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD). Conventional doping of spiro-OMeTAD with hygroscopic lithium salts and volatile 4-tert-butylpyridine is a time-consuming process and also leads to poor device stability. We developed a new doping strategy for spiro-OMeTAD that avoids post-oxidation by using stable organic radicals as the dopant and ionic salts as the doping modulator (referred to as ion-modulated radical doping). We achieved PCEs of >25% and much-improved device stability under harsh conditions. The radicals provide hole polarons that instantly increase the conductivity and work function (WF), and ionic salts further modulate the WF by affecting the energetics of the hole polarons. This organic semiconductor doping strategy, which decouples conductivity and WF tunability, could inspire further optimization in other optoelectronic devices.

  • Effects of thermal annealing on localization and strain in core/multishell GaAs/GaNAs/GaAs nanowires
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Core/shell nanowire (NW) heterostructures based on III-V semiconductors and related alloys are attractive for optoelectronic and photonic applications owing to the ability to modify their electronic structure via bandgap and strain engineering. Post-growth thermal annealing of such NWs is often involved during device fabrication and can also be used to improve their optical and transport properties. However, effects of such annealing on alloy disorder and strain in core/shell NWs are not fully understood. In this work we investigate these effects in novel core/shell/shell GaAs/GaNAs/GaAs NWs grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (111) Si substrates. By employing polarization-resolved photoluminescence measurements, we show that annealing (i) improves overall alloy uniformity due to suppressed long-range fluctuations in the N composition; (ii) reduces local strain within N clusters acting as quantum dot emitters; and (iii) leads to partial relaxation of the global strain caused by the lattice mismatch between GaNAs and GaAs. Our results, therefore, underline applicability of such treatment for improving optical quality of NWs from highly-mismatched alloys. They also call for caution when using ex-situ annealing in strain-engineered NW heterostructures.

  • Coupled MELCOR/COCOMO analysis on quench of ex-vessel debris beds
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Annals of Nuclear Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-4549 .- 1873-2100. ; 165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cornerstone of severe accident strategy of Nordic BWRs is to flood the reactor cavity for the long-termcoolability of an ex-vessel debris bed. As a prerequisite of the long-term coolability, the hot debris bedformed from fuel coolant interactions (FCI) should be quenched. In the present study, coupling of theMELCOR and COCOMO codes is realized with the aim to analyze the quench process of an ex-vessel debrisbed under prototypical condition of a Nordic BWR. In this coupled simulation, MELCOR performs an integralanalysis of accident progression, and COCOMO performs the thermal–hydraulic analysis of the debrisbed in the flooded cavity. The effective diameter of the particles is investigated. The discussion on thebed’s shape shows a significant effect on the propagation of the quench front, due to different flow patterns.Compared with MELCOR standalone simulation, the coupled simulation predicts earlier cavity poolsaturation and containment venting.

  • Development and application of a surrogate model for quick estimation of ex-vessel debris bed coolability
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Engineering and Design. - : Elsevier BV. - 0029-5493 .- 1872-759X. ; 370
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During a hypothetical severe accident of a Nordic boiling water reactor (BWR), an ex-vessel particulate debris bed is expected to form in the flooded lower drywell due to melt-coolant interactions after vessel failure. The key parameter to evaluate debris bed coolability is the dryout heat flux (DHF) or dryout power density, representing the limit of heat removal capacity by the coolant. Several numerical codes such as COCOMO have been developed to simulate thermal hydraulics in multi-dimensional debris beds and predict the cooling limit, but they are computationally expensive and not suitable for probabilistic risk analysis. This paper aims to develop a surrogate model which can serve as a quick-estimate tool for the dryout power density of a heap-like debris bed in a saturated water pool. The dryout power density predicted from the COCOMO code is treated as the full model. A characteristic factor is introduced as the dryout power density ratio between the multi-dimensional debris bed (predicted by COCOMO code) and the corresponding one-dimensional debris bed (predicted by Lipinski 0-D model). The characteristic factor is correlated by the Kriging method with six parameters: bed porosity, particle diameter, debris mass, bed slope, cavity radius and containment pressure. After the surrogate model is trained and validated, it is employed to analyze the coolability of prototypical debris beds of a reference Nordic BWR, given the bed mass and containment pressure from MELCOR simulation. Coolability maps are produced as quick look-up diagrams for identification of coolable domain with the variation of porosity, particle diameter and slope angle. A preliminary uncertainty analysis is performed to demonstrate the effect of uncertain input parameters on non-coolable domain.
