  • Measurements of (XcJ)-> K+K-K+K- decays
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 642:3, s. 197-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using 14M psi(2S) events taken with the BESII detector, chi(cJ) -> 2(K+K-) decays are studied. For the four-kaon final state, the branching fractions are B(chi(c0,1,2) ->.2(K+K-)) = (3.48 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.47) x 10(-3), (0.70 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3), and (2.17 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.31) x 10(-3). For the phi K+K- final state, the branching fractions, which are measured for the first time, are B(chi(c0,1,2) -> phi K+K-) = (1.03 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.15) x 10(-3), (0.46 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.06) x 10(-3), and (1.67 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.24) x 10(-4). For the phi phi final state, B(chi(c0,2) -> phi phi) = (0.94 +/- 0.21 +/- 0.13) x 10(-3) and (1.70 +/- 0.30 +/- 0.25) x 10(-3).

  • Comparison of hydrological impacts of climate change simulated by six hydrological models in the Dongjiang Basin, South China
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hydrology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-1694 .- 1879-2707. ; 336:3-4, s. 316-333
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Large differences in future climatic scenarios found when different global circulation models (GCMs) are employed have been extensively discussed in the scientific literature. However, differences in hydrological responses to the climatic scenarios resulting from the use of different hydrological models have received much less attention. Therefore, comparing and quantifying such differences are of particular importance for the water resources management of a catchment, a region, a continent, or even the globe. This study investigates potential impacts of human-induced climate change on the water availability in the Dongjiang basin, South China, using six monthly water balance models, namely the Thornthwaite–Mather (TM), Vrije Universitet Brussel (VUB), Xinanjiang (XAJ), Guo (GM), WatBal (WM), and Schaake (SM) models. The study utilizes 29-year long records of monthly streamflow and climate in the Dongjiang basin. The capability of the six models in simulating the present climate water balance components is first evaluated and the results of the models in simulating the impact of the postulated climate change are then analyzed and compared. The results of analysis reveal that (1) all six conceptual models have similar capabilities in reproducing historical water balance components; (2) greater differences in the model results occur when the models are used to simulate the hydrological impact of the postulated climate changes; and (3) a model without a threshold in soil moisture simulation results in greater changes in model-predicted soil moisture with respect to alternative climates than the models with a threshold soil moisture. The study provides insights into the plausible changes in basin hydrology due to climate change, that is, it shows that there can be significant implications for the investigation of response strategies for water supply and flood control due to climate change.

  • Photon-hadron jet correlations in p plus p and Au plus Au collisions at s(NN)=200 GeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 80:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the observation at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of suppression of back-to-back correlations in the direct photon+jet channel in Au+Au relative to p+p collisions. Two-particle correlations of direct photon triggers with associated hadrons are obtained by statistical subtraction of the decay photon-hadron (gamma-h) background. The initial momentum of the away-side parton is tightly constrained, because the parton-photon pair exactly balance in momentum at leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, making such correlations a powerful probe of the in-medium parton energy loss. The away-side nuclear suppression factor, I-AA, in central Au+Au collisions, is 0.32 +/- 0.12(stat)+/- 0.09(syst) for hadrons of 3 < p(T)(h)< 5 in coincidence with photons of 5 < p(T)(gamma)< 15 GeV/c. The suppression is comparable to that observed for high-p(T) single hadrons and dihadrons. The direct photon associated yields in p+p collisions scale approximately with the momentum balance, z(T)equivalent to p(T)(h)/p(T)(gamma), as expected for a measurement of the away-side parton fragmentation function. We compare to Au+Au collisions for which the momentum balance dependence of the nuclear modification should be sensitive to the path-length dependence of parton energy loss.

  • CHANGE-POINT ALTERATIONS OF EXTREME WATER LEVELS AND UNDERLYING CAUSES IN THE PEARL RIVER DELTA, CHINA
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Rivers Research and Applications. - : Wiley. - 1535-1459 .- 1535-1467. ; 25, s. 1153-1168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the Bayesian model and Lepage test were used to detect change point and to analyse associated statistical properties of high/low water levels in summer (June, July and August (JJA)) and winter (December, January and February (DJF)) months across the PRD (Pearl River Delta). The results indicate that: (1) two time intervals, that is 1979-1981 and 1988-1995, witness abrupt changes of SmH/SmL (summer mean high water level/summer mean low water level). The lower PRD is dominated by increased mean and coefficient of variation (Cv) of SmH. Increased mean but decreased Cv of SmL can be observed in the Mainstem Pearl River; (2) WmL (winter mean low water level) and WmH (winter mean high water level) of about 74% of the total stations have two change points occurred roughly during 1969-1971 and 1993-1995. First change points of WmH are mainly characterized by increased mean and Cv, but decreased mean and increased Cv of WmL can be observed across major parts of the PRD. The driving factors causing abrupt changes of water levels are various. Intensive human activities cannot be ignored, for example in-channel dredging and reallocation of the streamflow within the river channels due to human-induced topographical changes of river channel. Different responses of high/low water levels to externally influencing factors and interactions between influencing factors make the alterations of the water levels across the PRD more complicated. The findings of this paper will be helpful for the management of the PRD and human mitigation to natural hazards under the changing environment. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

  • A distributed monthly hydrological model for integrating spatial variations of basin topography and rainfall
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Hydrological Processes. - : Wiley. - 0885-6087 .- 1099-1085. ; 21:2, s. 242-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hydrological models at a monthly time-scale are important tools for hydrological analysis, such as in impact assessment of climate change and regional water resources planning. Traditionally, monthly models adopt a conceptual, lumped-parameter approach and cannot account for spatial variations of basin characteristics and climatic inputs. A large requirement for data often severely limits the utility of physically based, distributed-parameter models. Based on the variable-source-area concept, we considered basin topography and rainfall to be two major factors whose spatial variations play a dominant role in runoff generation and developed a monthly model that is able to account for their influences in the spatial and temporal dynamics of water balance. As a hybrid of the Xinanjiang model and TOPMODEL, the new model is constructed by innovatively making use of the highly acclaimed simulation techniques in the two existing models. A major contribution of this model development study is to adopt the technique of implicit representation of soil moisture characteristics in the Xinanjiang model and use the TOPMODEL concept to integrate terrain variations into runoff simulation. Specifically, the TOPMODEL topographic index ln(a/tan) is converted into an index of relative difficulty in runoff generation (IRDG) and then the cumulative frequency distribution of IRDG is used to substitute the parabolic curve, which represents the spatial variation of soil storage capacity in the Xinanjiang model. Digital elevation model data play a key role in the modelling procedures on a geographical information system platform, including basin segmentation, estimation of rainfall for each sub-basin and computation of terrain characteristics. Other monthly data for model calibration and validation are rainfall, pan evaporation and runoff. The new model has only three parameters to be estimated, i.e. watershed-average field capacity WM, pan coefficient and runoff generation coefficient . Sensitivity analysis demonstrates that runoff is least sensitive to WM and, therefore, it can be determined by a prior estimation based on the climate and soil properties of the study basin. The other two parameters can be determined using optimization methods. Model testing was carried out in a number of nested sub-basins of two watersheds (Yuanjiang River and Dongjiang River) in the humid region in central and southern China. Simulation results show that the model is capable of describing spatial and temporal variations of water balance components, including soil moisture content, evapotranspiration and runoff, over the watershed. With a minimal requirement for input data and parameterization, this terrain-based distributed model is a valuable contribution to the ever-advancing technology of hydrological modelling.

  • Sensitivity of the Penman–Monteith reference evapotranspiration to key climatic variables in the Changjiang (Yangtze River) basin
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hydrology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-1694 .- 1879-2707. ; 329:3-4, s. 620-629
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sensitivity analysis is important in understanding the relative importance of climatic variables to the variation of reference evapotranspiration (ETref). In this study, a non-dimensional relative sensitivity coefficient was employed to predict responses of ETref to perturbations of four climatic variables in the Changjiang (Yangtze River) basin. ETref was estimated with the FAO-56 Penman–Monteith equation. A 41-year historical dataset of daily air temperature, wind speed, relative humidity and daily sunshine duration at 150 national meteorological observatory stations was used in the analysis. Results show that the response of ETref can be precisely predicted under perturbation of relative humidity or shortwave radiation by their sensitivity coefficients; the predictive power under perturbations of air temperature and wind speed depended on the magnitude of the perturbation, season and region. The prediction errors were much smaller than the seasonal and regional variation of their sensitivity coefficients. The sensitivity coefficient could also be used to predict the response of ETref to co-perturbation of several variables. The accuracy of the prediction increases from the lower to the upper region. Spatial variations of long-term average monthly and yearly sensitivity coefficients were obtained by interpolation of station estimates. In general, relative humidity was the most sensitive variable, followed by shortwave radiation, air temperature and wind speed. The actual rank of the four climatic variables in terms of their sensitivity varied with season and region. The large spatial variability of the sensitivity coefficients of all the climatic variables in the middle and lower regions of the basin was to a large extent determined by the distinct wind-speed patterns in those two regions.
