  • Making visible, rendering obscure : Reading the plastic crisis through contemporary artistic visual representations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Global Sustainability. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 2059-4798. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the mid-twentieth century, plastic has become a ubiquitous material. However, its produc- tion, consumption and disposal on a massive scale have led to a range of devastating conse- quences that together form the ‘plastic crisis’. This paper presents a novel mapping of the ways contemporary artistic visual representations narrate and politicize the plastic crisis through their different messages and aesthetics. Drawing on a multifaceted understanding of the plastic crisis and on how art navigates political and aesthetic spheres, an analysis of 35 artworks is con- ducted. Ocean plastic pollution emerges as a dominant theme, together with disposability; and these are connected to consumption patterns and consumer responsibility. However, less atten- tion is given to plastic’s dependence on fossil fuels and possible toxicity. The result is art of strik- ing beauty and emotional resonance, but that downplays the systemic nature of the plastic crisis and the urgent need to hold manufacturers and regulators to account.

  • Reconfiguring work and organizing for post-pandemic futures
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Ephemera: Theory and Politics in Organization. - 1473-2866. ; 20:4, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Across the world, the pandemic has made many of us rapidly change (at least temporarily) how we organize, work, and live, provoking a series of urgent questions. What is our relationship with the family, community, environment and the state? How should we structure our work? How do we value essential work and workers? How are we going to live, work, and organize differently in a post-pandemic world? This editorial to the open issue of ephemera, written amidst the pandemic, starts with a reflection on the new configurations of work and production. We then zoom in on the current trend of digitalization. The remaining part of the editorial reframes work and economy in terms of care and shows how resistance and action for alternatives can be organized. It is concluded with some examples of initiatives for socio-ecological transformation that were articulated during the pandemic.

  • The consumption of work: Representations and interpretations of the meaning of work at a UK university
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Organization. - : SAGE Publications. - 1350-5084 .- 1461-7323. ; 27:4, s. 517-536
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on representations of the nexus of work, meaning and consumption as experienced by university students. We develop an empirically based argument that the meaning of work is being constructed as an object of consumption on a British university campus. We suggest that this indicates two key changes in representations of the meaning of work. First, there is a significant shift in the social construction of orientations to work towards what we term ‘consumption of work’. Second, we argue that this new social construction is made up of three dimensions: consumption of an idealised image of work, consumption through specific work processes and consumption of self-development opportunities at work. We conclude by suggesting ways in which this argument could be researched further.

  • Work
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Uneven Earth.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Work is drudgery for a lot of people, whether physically or mentally, as they have to work a lot to make a living. Despite this, the work we do defines how we are perceived in society, while precarity of work has become the norm. A lot of work in capitalist growth-oriented economies is also environmentally and socially destructive. However, work can be different and meaningful, if radically reorganised. In what follows I will introduce the word, then proceed to addressing the problems with work, and finish by sketching how work could be transformed. This entry is the twelfth contribution to Uneven Earth’s new Resources for a better future series: a glossary of crucial concepts in political ecology, alternative economics, and environmental justice.

  • Work, reconfigured
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Ephemera: Theory and Politics in Organization. - 1473-2866. ; 20:4
  • Annan publikation (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This open issue is published against the background of a major global pandemic. The old ‘normal’ seems far away and undesirable, as a socio-ecological transformation becomes even more urgent. The contributions featured here scrutinize the current trends in the capitalist mode of production and envision the alternative organization of our societies. They examine new configurations of work, to which capital-led digitalization is often key, and ways to resist it. Attention is also paid to a fundamental rethinking of work, economy and care. Having been written before the pandemic, the current situation has only accelerated the gravity of the phenomena the contributions engage with. Through various theoretical and practical interventions, this issue can help address ‘what is to be done’ to construct a radically different normal. The follow-up question of ‘how is it to be done’, in turn, requires more thinking and action from us all.
