  • Towards a methodology for longitudinal evaluation of social robotic telepresence for elderly
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 1st Workshop on Social Robotic Telepresence at HRI 2011.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a methodology for performing longitudinal evaluations when a social robotic telepresence system is deployed in realistic environments. This work is the core of an Ambient Assisted Living Project called ExCITE, Enabling Social Interaction Through Telepresence. The ExCITE project is geared towards an elderly audience and has as aim to increase social interaction among elderly, their family and healthcare services by using robotic telepresence. The robotic system used in the project is called the Giraff robot and over a three year period, prototypes of this platform are deployed at a number of test-sites in different European countries where user feedback is collected and fedback into the refinement of the prototype. In this paper, we discuss the methodology of ExCITE in particular relation to other methodologies for longitudinal evaluation. The paper also provides a discussion of the possible pitfalls and risks in performing longitudinal studies of this nature particularly as they relate to social robotic telepresence technologies.

  • Violence gratuite et adolescents-bourreaux : Réception, traduction et enjeux de deux romans suédois pour adolescents, en France, au début des années 2000
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of Swedish literature for adolescents in the French literary scene in the early 2000s. The sociology of literature constitutes the main theoretical framework of this thesis.Drawing from examples that broach the sensitive topic of "unprovoked violence" as it is treated in two Swedish novels for teenagers, Spelar död [Play Death] by Stefan Casta and När tågen går förbi (Train Wreck) by Malin Lindroth, this thesis shows how these novels are innovative in Even-Zohar’s sense of the term, as addressed in his Polysystem Theory (1990). By introducing "unprovoked violence" and violent teenagers via a realistic genre, such works filled a vacuum in the French system and injected a new dynamic into it. This dynamic makes it possible for new literary models to be introduced in the system and to change the standards of that system. The analyses of the French and Swedish receptions of the two novels mentioned above show that they gave rise to a moral panic in France, which is not an unusual thing to happen in periods of ongoing change. This also clarifies the differences in norms between the two systems. The French system tends to reject dark topics, while the Swedish wishes to discuss them. The investigations of the translations of unprovoked violence show that adherence to Swedish norms determine the translation’s adequacy (Toury), which may be part of the reason for the stormy reception the two works received in France, and their undergoing censure. The position of translators and publishers in the literary system also plays a major role for a translated text not being censured during the transfer from one system to another.Even if the Swedish titles translated into French are few, this thesis shows that the impact of Swedish literature on adolescents in France is certain. By introducing new and sensitive topics, such novels could be early markers of an evolution of the French field of literature for adolescents.

  • Political Consumerism and the Transition Towards a More Sustainable Food Regime Looking Behind and Beyond the Organic Shelf
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Food Practices in Transition: Changing Food Consumption, Retail and Production in the Age of Reflexive Modernity.
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Abstract in Undetermined In media, policymaking and research, increasing attention is drawn to the phenomenon of ‘green political consumerism’, referring to consumerrelated practices that are based on concerns beyond the traditional criteria of product quality and price. Political consumerism is about expressing non-economic values, that is, values beyond the direct, economic self-interest of consumers. Such values may concern social conditions of farmers producing our food or the welfare of animals used in food production. Green political consumerism is a concept that highlights a concern for environmental conditions, although these concerns often overlap with social and animal-related ones (Boström & Klintman 2008). Micheletti (2003) has defi ned political consumerism as consumers’ ‘individualistic collective action’, practiced, for instance, through boycotting or buycotting certain products and services. For the purpose of this chapter, it is important to mention that there is a need to keep the defi nition of political consumerism subject to continuous discussion and debate. A main claim in this chapter is that it is particularly important not to equal green political consumption merely with purchases of eco-labeled products and services. To follow such principles of consumption or to have small ecological footprints due to smaller economic resources, for example, are two very diff erent things, which should both be of interest in debates about political consumerism.

  • Information awareness in command and control : precision, quality, utility
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: FUSION 2000. - 2725700000 ; , s. THB1/25-THB1/32 vol.2
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In current command and control system design, the concept of information plays a central role. In order to find architectures for situation and threat databases making full use of all dimensions of information, the concept of information awareness must be understood. We consider and define some information attributes: measures of precision, quality and usability, and suggest some uses of these concepts. The analysis is Bayesian. A critical point is where subjective Bayesian probabilities of decision makers meet the objective sensor related Bayesian assessments of the system. This interface must be designed to avoid credibility problems.

  • Connection of organics to atmospheric new particle formation and growth at an urban site of Beijing
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1352-2310. ; 103, s. 7-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present work, we aim to elucidate the roles of low-volatility organic vapors in atmospheric new particle formation in urban Beijing. Proposed organic molecules are derived from both the ambient measurement and the reasonable proxy. Several representations for the nucleation theories involving sulfuric acid and organic vapors are evaluated. The particle nucleation rates show good correlations both with sulfuric acid and organic vapors, suggesting that both play an important role in the atmospheric new particle formation. For the entire data set, the best fit (R=0.79, slope=1.1) between the observed and modeled particle nucleation rates is achieved with the homogenous nucleation theory of sulfuric acid (both homomolecularly and heteromolecularly) with separate coefficients in J=KSA1[H2SO4]2+KSA2[H2SO4][Org]. In addition, sulfuric acid concentration only contributes a small fraction (<15%) to the total observed growth rate. The growth rates of 7–30nm particles show positive correlation with the organic vapors oxidized by ozone, suggesting that particle nucleation may be controlled by the light intensity or OH concentration, while the growth of nucleation mode particles seems to be limited more by the concentrations of the organic precursors.

  • Distress and hopelessness among parents of children with congenital heartdisease, parents of children with other diseases and parents of healthy children
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Psychosomatic Research. - 0022-3999 .- 1879-1360. ; 52:4, s. 193-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: We examined differences in distress (i.e., depression, anxiety, and somatisation) and hopelessness (e.g., suicide ideation) among parents of congenital heart disease (CHD) children (PCCHD, n=1092), parents of children with other diseases (PCOD, n=112), and parents of healthy children (PHC, n=293). In addition, we determined the proportion of parents in each group whose scores in distress and hopelessness, respectively, exceeded norms for psychiatric outpatients (POPN) and depressed people, and identified determinants of distress and hopelessness among all parents, and the PCCHD. Method: The parents completed a questionnaire about such areas as distress and hopelessness. The design was cross-sectional and data were collected during 20 consecutive days. Results: PCCHD were generally at higher risk of distress and hopelessness. A significant number of parents, in particular PCCHD, reported levels of distress and hopelessness within/above POPN and depressed people, respectively. Mothers within all parent groups had higher levels of distress and hopelessness than fathers, with the highest levels among mothers of children with CHD compared to mothers in the other groups. Fathers of children with CHD were doing worse than fathers belonging to the other groups. There were no differences between PCOD and PHC. Variables such as employment status and financial situation explained more of the variation in distress and hopelessness among parents than the diseases of their children. Conclusion: We corroborated previous findings and provide new insights into the experiences of PCCHD that may be of importance when considering intervention. Further research concerning the parents, in particular PCCHD, at risk of developing psychosocial problems is needed.
