Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- The internal structure of the toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmode (TAE) is studied by comparing soft x-ray profile and beam ion loss data taken during TAE activity in the DIII-D tokamak [W. W. Heidbrink , Nucl. Fusion 37, 1411 (1997)] with predictions from theories based on ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), gyrofluid, and gyrokinetic models. The soft x-ray measurements indicate a centrally peaked eigenfunction, a feature which is closest to the gyrokinetic model's prediction. The beam ion losses are simulated using a guiding center code. In the simulations, the TAE eigenfunction calculated using the ideal MHD model acts as a perturbation to the equilibrium field. The predicted beam ion losses are an order of magnitude less than the observed similar to6%-8% losses at the peak experimental amplitude of deltaB(r)/B(0)similar or equal to2-5x10(-4).

- The Schottky barrier height (Phi(B)) and reverse breakdown voltage (V-B) of Au/n-SiC diodes were used to examine the effect of inductively coupled plasma SF6/O-2 discharges on the near-surface electrical properties of SiC. For low ion energies (less than or equal to 60 eV) in the discharge, there is minimal change in Phi(B) and V-B, but both parameters degrade at higher energies. Highly anisotropic features typical of through-wafer via holes were formed in SiC using an Al mask.

Production of exopolysaccharide by Burkholderia cenocepacia results in altered cell-surface interactions and altered bacterial clearance in mice

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Despite the characterization of some Burkholderia cepacia complex exopolysaccharides (EPSs), little is known about the role of EPSs in the pathogenicity of B. cepacia complex organisms. We describe 2 Burkholderia cenocepacia (genomovar III) isolates obtained from a patient with cystic fibrosis (CF): the nonmucoid isolate C8963 and the mucoid isolate C9343. Both isolates had identical random amplified polymorphic DNA patterns. C9343 produced a capsule composed of the EPSs PS-I and PS-II, as well as alpha -1,6-glucan. These isolates exhibited several phenotypic differences: C8963 synthesized octanoyl-homoserine lactone and produced biofilms, but C9343 did not; in a mouse model of pulmonary infection, C8963 was cleared more rapidly than was C9343; and C9343 interacted poorly with macrophages and neutrophils, compared with C8963, suggesting that the C9343 capsule interfered with cell-surface interactions. Overproduction of EPS by C9343 resulted in a mucoid appearance and interfered with cell-surface interactions and clearance in an animal model. This mucoid colonial appearance could enhance the persistence and virulence of this important CF-related pathogen.

Feedback and rotational stabilization of resistive wall modes in ITER

Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
- Different models have been introduced in the stability code MARS-F in order tostudy the damping effect of resistive wall modes (RWM) in rotating plasmas. Benchmarkof MARS-F calculations with RWM experiments on JET and D3D indicates thatthe semi-kinetic damping model is a good candidate for explaining the dampingmechanisms. Based on these results, the critical rotation speeds required forRWM stabilization in an advanced ITER scenario are predicted. Active feedbackcontrol of the $n=1$ RWM in ITER is also studied using the MARS-F code.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Background: Calcipotriene and betamethasone dipropionate are topical treatments for psoriasis vulgaris. Their mode of action is different. Improved risk/benefit may result with concomitant use of the two compounds together. A new vehicle has been created with the objective of obtaining optimal stability of both calcipotriene and betamethasone dipropionate in the combination product. Objective. We compared the clinical efficacy of a fixed combination of calcipotriene and betamethasone clipropionate in a new vehicle to calcipotriene in the new vehicle, betamethasone in the new vehicle, and the new vehicle alone. Methods: This was an international, multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, 4-week study in patients with psoriasis vulgaris amenable to topical treatment. Results. The mean percentage reduction in PASI from baseline to end of treatment was 73.2% in the combination group (n = 301), 48.8% in the calcipotriene group (n = 308), 63.1% in the betamethasone dipropionate group (n = 312) and 28.8% in the new vehicle group (n = 107), (P < .001). The mean percentage reduction in PASI during the first week was 48.1%, 28.4%, 41.4%, and 21.5%, respectively (P < .001). Conclusion: A combination product of calcipotriene 50 mug/g and betamethasone dipropionate 0.5 mg/g in the new vehicle shows superior efficacy with a more rapid onset of action than the new vehicle containing either constituent alone in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris.
