  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Crohn's & Colitis. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS. - 1873-9946 .- 1876-4479.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is the second in a series of two publications on the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation [ECCO] evidence-based consensus on the management of Crohn's disease. The first article covers medical management; the present article addresses surgical management, including preoperative aspects and drug management before surgery. It also provides technical advice for a variety of common clinical situations. Both articles together represent the evidence-based recommendations of the ECCO for Crohn's disease and an update of prior ECCO Guidelines.

  • Value of energy storage for transmission investments
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Energy Strategy Reviews. - : Elsevier. - 2211-467X .- 2211-4688. ; 24, s. 94-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates joint investment planning of transmission lines and energy storage. Energy storage can be seen as a complement to transmission infrastructure and can be used for transmission deferral. On the other hand, under certain conditions, when the expected profit of both sectors depends on congestion in the system, transmission and energy storage can be seen as competitors. The transmission sector is in this study assumed to be a natural monopoly and operation and planning of transmission lines is performed by an independent company whereas the energy storage owner company operates and invests under competitive market rules. Three main questions are addressed in this paper. First of all, will additional energy storage capacity contribute to the growth of social welfare? Second, how will incentive regulation of the transmission network affect the need for energy storage? Third, how will the choice of incentive regulation affect the value of energy storage. This paper first provides an overview of incentive regulation which can be applied to transmission investments. Then case studies based on a 6-node power system network and the IEEE 118-node system are proposed in order to answer the aforementioned questions. The results of the case studies show that energy storage investments complement transmission expansion and contribute to higher social welfare values. The benefits from energy storage investments are significantly higher under two investigated incentive regulations as compared to the case without incentive regulation. Thus, the transmission investment planning process should consider energy storage options.

  • A methodological framework for capturing marine small-scale fisheries' contributions to the sustainable development goals
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE. - 1862-4065 .- 1862-4057. ; 19, s. 1119-1137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small-scale fisheries (SSF) receive increasing international attention for landing around 40% of global marine fisheries catches and employing millions of people globally. Their contributions to food security and poverty alleviation, especially in developing countries, make it relevant to consider them when discussing sustainable development goals (SDGs). Achieving SDGs by supporting SSF means understanding fisheries in their broader context, from the health of marine ecosystems to social and economic features such as employment, public health, culture, and the effects of global change. Social-ecological relationships in SSF are complex and poorly understood, thus challenging the identification of policies that could improve and preserve the contributions of SSF to sustainable development. Here, we developed an expert-based rapid appraisal framework to identify and characterize the relationships between SSF and SDGs. The framework serves as a diagnostic tool for identifying strengths and gaps in SSF potential in enhancing SDG achievement in data-limited situations. Our structured approach extends beyond SDG 14 and target 14.b, offering insights into SSF's contributions to 11 other SDGs. As a proof of concept, we illustrate the approach and its potential contributions in two case studies in Madagascar. The method effectively captured the multiple dimensions of the SSF through the SDG lens, providing a contextually relevant understanding of how global UN goals can be achieved locally. Further research is needed to define mechanisms for aggregating and reporting the multiple, case-specific contributions of SSF to monitor progress toward the SDGs at national and global levels.

  • Phase-change materials (PCMs) for warming or cooling in protective clothing
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Protective Clothing : Managing Thermal Stress - Managing Thermal Stress. - : Elsevier. - 9781782420323 - 9781782420408 ; , s. 227-249
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The various types of phase-change materials (PCMs), which absorb or release stored latent heat when they change phases causing cooling and warming effects, are described and the working principles are outlined. The various ways of incorporating PCMs into textiles for protective clothing are explored, and critical factors identified that determine the effectiveness of PCM cooling and warming effects. Examples of applications are given. Standards and testing, future trends and challenges are discussed.

  • A neural network approach to missing marker reconstruction in human motion capture
  • 2018
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Optical motion capture systems have become a widely used technology in various fields, such as augmented reality, robotics, movie production, etc. Such systems use a large number of cameras to triangulate the position of optical markers. The marker positions are estimated with high accuracy. However, especially when tracking articulated bodies, a fraction of the markers in each timestep is missing from the reconstruction. In this paper, we propose to use a neural network approach to learn how human motion is temporally and spatially correlated, and reconstruct missing markers positions through this model. We experiment with two different models, one LSTM-based and one time-window-based. Both methods produce state-of-the-art results, while working online, as opposed to most of the alternative methods, which require the complete sequence to be known. The implementation is publicly available at https://github.com/Svito-zar/NN-for-Missing-Marker-Reconstruction .

  • Analyzing Input and Output Representations for Speech-Driven Gesture Generation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 19th ACM International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Publications. - 9781450366724
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a novel framework for automatic speech-driven gesture generation, applicable to human-agent interaction including both virtual agents and robots. Specifically, we extend recent deep-learning-based, data-driven methods for speech-driven gesture generation by incorporating representation learning. Our model takes speech as input and produces gestures as output, in the form of a sequence of 3D coordinates. Our approach consists of two steps. First, we learn a lower-dimensional representation of human motion using a denoising autoencoder neural network, consisting of a motion encoder MotionE and a motion decoder MotionD. The learned representation preserves the most important aspects of the human pose variation while removing less relevant variation. Second, we train a novel encoder network SpeechE to map from speech to a corresponding motion representation with reduced dimensionality. At test time, the speech encoder and the motion decoder networks are combined: SpeechE predicts motion representations based on a given speech signal and MotionD then decodes these representations to produce motion sequences. We evaluate different representation sizes in order to find the most effective dimensionality for the representation. We also evaluate the effects of using different speech features as input to the model. We find that mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), alone or combined with prosodic features, perform the best. The results of a subsequent user study confirm the benefits of the representation learning.

  • Road safety on four continents : Warsaw, Poland 5-7 October 2005. Conference proceedings
  • 2005
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This conference was the 13th in a series of road safety conferences starting in 1987 with emphasis on two continents, Europe and North America. In year 2000 the conference included three continents, also Africa, and this time emphasis was even broader with four continents including Asia. The main objective of the Conference was to explore emerging research and developments in the area of Road Safety. Special emphasis was towards the application of research and to involve developing countries and countries in transition in the event both as presenters and as delegates. A principle theme was the pros and cons of applied research done in the 'north' to problems in the 'south'.
