    • The purpose of this study is to explore whether, and if so how, a design activity could encourage students to express and develop knowledge on emerging technology in relation to issues about sustainability. Several researchers have asserted that, in today's technologically dependent society, it is important to be able to control technology and make informed decisions connected to technology. Design activities could make a significant contribution to technology education while students are developing their knowledge about technology. Thus, the present study aims to analyze students' verbal interactions as they work in a design project, which includes designing a model of a house, regarding their ability to develop technological literacy with the support of a physical model. The study is based on several small-group interactions that were recorded, transcribed, analyzed, and discussed. This research project was conducted as an observation of technology education in a Swedish compulsory school. The students (aged 13-14) negotiated and shared knowledge about technology as they interacted with their fellow students. The results indicate that, in a relatively large number of situations, the students expressed knowledge about emerging technology and adopted a sustainability perspective while working in a design activity, and thereby, successively developed technological literacy. This meant that the students were able to integrate knowledge on emerging technology like graphene, nanotechnology, and algae batteries in their models. Furthermore, the results indicate that, during technical development work, students were able to develop reasoning, communication, and collaboration skills.

  • APPLICATION OF DIFFERENT HYDROLOGIC MODELS IN FLASH FLOODS SIMULATION

    • In recent years, the flash flood occurs frequently and intensively. It has become a world-wide focus in the field of disaster prevention and mitigation. The flash flood critical rainfall determination method, flash floods forecasting model and experience forecasting method are the most commonly used methods. This study focused on the application of hydrological models for flash floods simulation.The research has adopted 7 flood forecasting models with different types and structures: topography-based API model, Xinanjiang Model, Xinanjiang Model with excess infiltration, Sacramento Model, IHACRES, BP-KNN Model and TOPKAPI. Every model will be applied in semi-humid and semi-arid watersheds Banqiao, Maduwang, Zhidan in China, which have high risk of flash floods. According to the characteristic of flash floods, a set of evaluation for the simulation results isput forward. The purpose is to find out one or several hydrological models fit for research area and to provide reference for future related research.Combining with topography and runoff characteristics of each watershed, the paper collected and compared various simulation results of different models. Results indicated that models performed varies in semi-humid and semi-arid basins because of the complicated runoff mechanism in these areas. Among the conceptual hydrological models, Xinanjiang Model with excess infiltration performed better than the models with single runoff mechanism. TOPKAPI has a better simulation results than the lumped models topography-based API model and IHACRES. However, it has higher data requirements. BP-KNN model contains no physical mechanism and performed best in calibration period, but the accuracy falls greatly in validation period.

    • The objective of this study is to develop an optimized BWR fuel assembly design for thorium–plutonium fuel. In this work, the optimization goal is to maximize the amount of energy that can be extracted from a certain amount of plutonium, while maintaining acceptable values of the neutronic safety parameters such as reactivity coefficients, shutdown margins and power distribution. The factors having the most significant influence on the neutronic properties are the hydrogen-to-heavy-metal ratio, the distribution of the moderator within the fuel assembly, the initial plutonium fraction in the fuel and the radial distribution of the plutonium in the fuel assembly. The study begins with an investigation of how these factors affect the plutonium requirements and the safety parameters. The gathered knowledge is then used to develop and evaluate a fuel assembly design. The main characteristics of this fuel design are improved Pu efficiency, very high fractional Pu burning and neutronic safety parameters compliant with current demands on UOX fuel.
