  • A 12 country field study of the EORTC QLQ-C30 (version 3.0) and the head and neck cancer specific module (EORTC QLQ-H&N35) in head and neck patients
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer. - 1879-0852. ; 36:14, s. 1796-1807
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study tests the reliability and validity of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) head and neck cancer module (QLQ-H&N35) and version 3.0 of the EORTC Core Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) in 622 head and neck cancer patients from 12 countries. The patients completed the QLQ-C30, the QLQ-H&N35 and a debriefing questionnaire before antineoplastic treatment or at a follow-up. 232 patients receiving treatment completed a second questionnaire after treatment. Compliance was high and the questionnaire was well accepted by the patients. Multitrait scaling analysis confirmed the proposed scale structure of the QLQ-H&N35. The QLQ-H&N35 was responsive to differences between disease status, site and patients with different Karnofsky performance status, and to changes over time. The new physical functioning scale (with a four-point response format) of version 3.0 of the QLQ-C30 was shown to be more reliable than previous versions. Thus, the QLQ-H&N35, in conjunction with the QLQ-C30, appears to be reliable, valid and applicable to broad multicultural samples of head and neck cancer patients.

  • A new regioselective Heck vinylation with enamides. Synthesis and investigation of fluorous-tagged bidentate ligands for fast separation
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organic Chemistry. - Uppsala Univ, BMC, Dept Organ Pharmaceut Chem, SE-75123 Uppsala, Sweden. Univ Pittsburgh, Dept Chem, Pittsburgh, PA 15260 USA. : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0022-3263 .- 1520-6904. ; 68:17, s. 6639-6645
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internal ligand-controlled Heck vinylations of enamides were performed with high regioselectivity and delivered moderate to good yields of dienamides. Controlled heating by microwave irradiation accelerated the palladium-catalyzed reactions, and full conversions were achieved after reaction times of only 15-30 min. New bidentate fluorous-tagged 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane ligands (F-dppp's) were synthesized and examined. The cationic vinylations of the enamides with F-dppp ligands rendered essentially the same alpha-selectivity and catalytic activity as in those vinylations where nonfluorous ligands were employed. After reaction, the fluorous-tagged ligand material was easily removed by convenient solid fluorous phase separation. The high selectivity, simplicity, and generality of the experimental procedure should make this approach to 2-acylamino-1,3-butadienes attractive.

  • Molecular Gas in Seyfert Galaxies
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this report we present the results of a single dish study of the molecular gas properties in Seyfert galaxies. From the observations of the closest lying example, the Circinus galaxy, we find that about half of the molecular gas is distributed in a circumnuclear ring orbiting the central super-massive black hole, believed to be powering this type 2 Seyfert. The 100 pc-scale ring orbits with non-Keplerian rotation at a maximum velocity of > 180 km s-1. From this we deduce that the NH2/ICO Galactic conversion ratio causes us to overestimate the gas mass fraction by a factor of > 5. From further studies, the remainder of the gas appears to be in a 90°  wide outflow which extends to ±500 pc along the rotation axis of the ring. The maximum outflow velocity of 107Lsun  and the orientation of the outflow axis suggests that the molecular ring is very nearly coplanar with the central body obscuring the active galactic nucleus. By observing a sample of 20 Seyfert galaxies, we find that the HCN to CO luminosity ratio, LHCN/ LCO > 1/6, is considerably higher than for normal spiral galaxies and comparable to the ratios found in ultra-luminous infra-red galaxies (ULIRGs). Our observations suggest that there may be differences in the molecular gas distributions between low (LFIR ~ 1010 Lsun) and high (LFIR ~ 1011 Lsun) far infra-red luminous (FIR) Seyferts. By combining our results with the FIR luminosities, we find that LFIR/ LCO (LFIR ~ 1011 Lsun Seyferts) > 10LFIR/ LCO (normal  spirals) and LFIR/ LHCN (Seyferts) > LFIR/ LHCN (ULIRGs) > LFIR/ LHCN (normal  spirals). From this we cannot ascertain the relative radiation contribution of the star-burst and the active nucleus, although between NGC 4945 and Circinus, in which we have performed multi-transitional observations, these seem to differ. This may have the effect of lowering current estimates of the star formation rates in Seyfert galaxies, although both galaxies do appear to have relatively high populations (c.f. the Galaxy) of massive (>10Msun) stars. Finally, estimates of the gas inclinations in these 20 Seyferts appear to suggest that the various gas disk structures on all scales are usually aligned in each galaxy, supporting the notion that the obscuration may be but a dense component of the large-scale gas structure.
