    • Humanitarian aid to children of war. The organization of aid-related activities in the Örebro region 1919-1922The Swedish term krigsbarn, meaning children of war is a term used for the first time to describe children from countries affected by war 1914-1918; children, who were provided aid in the neutral countries. Sweden was one of the countries who aided a group of about 26 000 children during the years 1922-1924 and the coordination of this work was provided by the Swedish Red Cross. This contribution will give an insight into the process of implementation of the aid-related activities at the local level and map the mobilization of local authorities in the Örebro region. Moreover, it will reflect on the character of this aid by embodying the voices of these children, their families, and the individuals who helped them. The presentation is based on the collection called Red Cross Children of War stored at the Archival Center in Örebro.

  • Witnessing the Holocaust : Jewish Experiences and the Collection of the Polish Source Institute in Lund
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Early Holocaust Memory in Sweden. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030555320 - 9783030555313 ; , s. 67-91
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Polish Source Institute (PIŹ) in Lund in southern Sweden collected over 500 testimonies from Polish survivors in Sweden. The study analyses the work of the archive’s founder Zygmunt Łakociński and examines what role the Holocaust played in this documentation project. The author shows that the Polish national experience was the focal point of this collection. However, the institute also created a small Jewish section for interviews with Polish-Jewish survivors in Sweden. As the Jewish witnesses describe, Jewish life in Poland before the war was, despite widely spread antisemitism, strongly flourishing, and Polish-Jewish relations were deeply entangled. The complexity of these relations makes it impossible to view Polish history of war-suffering without considering the war-suffering of Polish Jews.

  • Women and Humanitarian Aid in Sweden - from Philantropy to Public Employment
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, the humanitarian aid-related activities and social assistance to refugees are two closely related fields of social work which in the first half of the 20th century were mostly conducted voluntarily within the unpaid sector of philanthropy and within non-governmental institutions. However, the distress and upheaval after the devastation of the First World War – including the extensive relocation of people from Central Europe to Sweden – demanded a new coordination of activities related to humanitarian aid work in the country. The political situation in the Third Reich during the 1930s led to refuge, that even if not to the expected overwhelming extent, but still to some also reached Sweden. Until the summer of 1939, when the Municipality for the State Refugee Aid (Nämnden för statens flyktinghjälp) was formed, there was no state support for the refugees, and the assistance to people from Central Europe was organized by the so-called Relief Committees. The Relief Committees were economically supported and organized within the framework of civil society. At the same time, the refuge from the Third Reich marks the beginning of the Swedish refuge aid. The aim of this presentation is to frame the aid-related activities as driven by two concrete case-studies and to address the question: to what extent did these activities impact the development of the welfare system in the first half of the 20th century in Sweden.
