    • This article summarizes our most recent contributions to the rapidly growing field of supported lipid assemblies with emphasis on current studies addressing both fundamental and applied aspects of supported lipid bilayer (SLB) and tethered lipid vesicles (TLVs) to be utilized in sensing applications. The new insights obtained from combining the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring technique with surface plasmon resonance are described, and we also present recent studies in which nanoplasmonic sensing has been used in studies of SLBs and TLVs. To gain full control over the spatial arrangement of TLVs in both two and three dimensions, we have developed a method for site-selective and sequence-specific sorting of DNA-tagged vesicles to surfaces modified with complementary DNA. The combination of this method with nanoplasmonic sensing formats is covered as well as the possibility of using DNA-modified vesicles for the detection of unlabeled DNA targets on the single-molecule level. Finally, a new method for membrane fusion induced by hybridization of vesicle-anchored DNA is demonstrated, including new results on content mixing obtained with vesicle populations encapsulating short, complementary DNA strands.

  • Turbulence in Business Networks : A Longitudinal Study of Mergers, Acquisitions and Bankruptcies Involving Swedish IT-companies

    • The end of the twentieth centry, and the beginning of the twenty-first, was a revolving period with many mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies among Swedish IT-companies. Such events are likely to affect more than just the companies directly involved, i.e. the bankrupt and consolidating parties, and this thesis considers the contextual embeddedness of mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies by studying them in a business network setting.The primary aim of this thesis is to further the understanding of business network change and its underlying dynamics. A business network is a conceptual description of the interrelatedness of companies, which makes them problematic to describe and understand. This thesis suggests a force-based approach to business network change, which focuses on the forces underlying the change rather than the actual alterations of the business network. The suggested approach emphasizes the change and enables an exploration and description of business network change based on its underlying forces, linked to form a change sequence. The events that occur and the forces they give rise to can be used to describe the character of such business network change sequences.To enable a study of a change sequence within the Swedish IT-related business network, this thesis will use a technique designed to gather information about events and parts of the business network structure by systematizing data from news items describing mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies involving Swedish IT-companies during the years 1994-2003. This data structuration technique enables a longitudinal and retrospective study of a business network change sequence. The analysis indicates a high possibility of inter-linkages between mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies involving Swedish IT-companies, and describes a business network change sequence with high intensity and wide extension, which is the type of business network change with the highest potential impact, here referred to as ‘turbulence in business networks’.

    • The resonance conditions for excitation of propagating surface plasmons at planar metal/dielectric interfaces and localized surface plasmons associated with metal nanostructures are both sensitive to changes in the interfacial refractive index. This has made these phenomena increasingly popular as transducer principles in label-free sensing of biomolecular recognition reactions. In this article, the authors review the recent progress in the field of nanoplasmonic bioanalytical sensing in general, but set particular focus on certain unique possibilities provided by short-range ordered nanoholes in thin metal films. Although the latter structures are formed in continuous metal films, while nanoparticles are discrete entities, these two systems display striking similarities with respect to sensing capabilities, including bulk sensitivities, and the localization of the electromagnetic fields. In contrast, periodic arrays of nanoholes formed in metal films, most known for their ability to provide wavelength-tuned enhanced transmission, show more similarities with conventional propagating surface plasmon resonance. However, common for both short-range ordered and periodic nanoholes formed in metal films is that the substrate is electrically conductive. Some of the possibilities that emerge from sensor templates that are both electrically conductive and plasmon active are discussed and illustrated using recent results on synchronized nanoplasmonic and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring of supported lipid bilayer formation and subsequent biomolecular recognition reactions. Besides the fact that this combination of techniques provides an independent measure of biomolecular structural changes, it is also shown to contribute with a general means to quantify the response from nanoplasmonic sensors in terms of bound molecular mass. c 2008 American Vacuum Society.

  • Network Connectivity and Business Netquakes : Ways to Understand the Spread of Change

    • Business network dynamics are generally discussed from the perspective of a focal business relationship and of relationships (e.g. with customers and/or suppliers) connected to it. Such studies examine how direct relationships influence each other, while indirect business relationships (e.g. with customers’ customers) are generally ignored. Thus, we still know little of how change spreads in business networks.   We propose a framework inspired by seismology, using the term ‘netquake’ to describe spread of change in business networks. In a business network, the effects of a netquake can basically take two forms: 1) change in the interaction between actors in the existing structure of connected ongoing business relationships, and 2) change in the overall network structure of connected relationships, by ending existing business relationships or initiating new ones. We propose that the intensity of a netquake can be identified using these basic forms of change in the network. The more changes in the network structure of connected relationships in relation to the amount of adaptation in the ongoing connected relationships, the higher the intensity of the netquake.   Earlier business network studies have shown that business relationships affect each other, which has been described as connectedness. In this paper we discuss connectedness at network level, i.e. network connectivity, as an important factor for understanding variations in netquake intensity. High level of connectivity means that changes spread easily in the network, whereas a low level of connectivity moderates the spreading, and thus the business netquake intensity.   The analysis is based on structural linkages of bankruptcies among Swedish IT-companies. The bankruptcies are both seen as the epicentre of business netquakes, and as effects of other netquakes. The spread of change can consequently be addressed through the occurrence of bankruptcies, and other types of effects are thus disregarded in this study. A higher level of network connectivity can be assumed in situations where many bankruptcies can be linked through connected business relationships, indicating high netquake intensity, whereas isolated bankruptcies, indicating low netquake intensity, are expected in structures with lower connectivity. The analysis indicates a large variability of the observable structural linkages of bankruptcies, and supports network connectivity as an important concept to understand spread of change in business networks.
