  • VoIP service performance optimization in pre-IEEE 802.11s Wireless Mesh Networks
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Circuits andSystems for Communications (ICCSC) 2008. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781424417070 ; , s. 75-79
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 802.11-based wireless mesh networks are seen as a means for providing last mile connections to next generation networks. Due to the low deployment cost and the mature technology used, they are scalable, easy to implement and robust. With an increasing coverage of wireless networks, VoIP becomes a cheaper alternative for traditional and cellular telephony. In this paper, we carry out a feasibility study of VoIP in a dual radio mesh environment. Heading towards 802.11s, we present the design of a mesh testbed and methodology for performing the measurements. Additionally, we address the problem that small voice packets introduce a high overhead leading to a low voice capacity of 802.11 based mesh networks. In order to alleviate this problem and increase the voice capacity, a novel packet aggregation mechanism is presented and evaluated using the ns-2 simulator.

  • The effect of veneer-modifcation on the bond-strength in laminated veneer products
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Pro Ligno. - 1841-4737 .- 2069-7430. ; 11:4, s. 43-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A major problem in the manufacture of three-dimensional laminated veneer products (LVP) is damage due to stretching and/or buckling of the veneer. To reduce or eliminate this problem, veneer densification or adding a strengthening layer to the veneer can be an alternative. To study how veneer modification influences the veneer-to-adhesive bond strength, three methods of modification were studied in relation to an unmodified reference veneer: (1) densified veneer, (2) veneer pre-bonded with paper and hot melt adhesive (HMA), (3) veneer pre-bonded with non-woven polypropylene (NW) fabric glued to the veneer (a) with a urea formaldehyde (UF) adhesive, (b) with a mixture of UF and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive, and (c) with a PVAc adhesive. Densification, pre-bonding with paper, and NW with UF/PVAc adhesive mixture resulted in no or only a slight decrease in strength of the bond-line compared to the reference. NW glued with UF or PVAc adhesive showed a considerable reduction in the strength of the bond-line. The climatic cycling had no significant influence on the bond strength.

  • Chlamydophila psittaci in birds of prey, Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Infection Ecology & Epidemiology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2000-8686. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Chlamydia psittaci is an intracellular bacterium primarily causing respiratory diseases in birds but may also be transmitted to other animals, including humans. The prevalence of the pathogen in wild birds in Sweden is largely unknown. Methods: DNA was extracted from cloacae swabs and screened for C. psittaci by using a 23S rRNA gene PCR assay. Partial 16S rRNA and ompA gene fragments were sequence determined and phylogenies were analysed by the neighbour-joining method. Results and conclusion: The C. psittaci prevalence was 1.3% in 319 Peregrine Falcons and White-tailed Sea Eagles, vulnerable top-predators in Sweden. 16S rRNA and ompA gene analysis showed that novel Chlamydia species, as well as novel C. psittaci strains, are to be found among wild birds.

  • Pharyngeal oxygen administration increases the time to serious desaturation at intubation in acute lung injury : an experimental study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Critical Care. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1364-8535 .- 1466-609X. ; 14:3, s. R93-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: Endotracheal intubation in critically ill patients is associated with severe life-threatening complications in about 20%, mainly due to hypoxemia. We hypothesized that apneic oxygenation via a pharyngeal catheter during the endotracheal intubation procedure would prevent or increase the time to life-threatening hypoxemia and tested this hypothesis in an acute lung injury animal model. METHODS: Eight anesthetized piglets with collapse-prone lungs induced by lung lavage were ventilated with a fraction of inspired oxygen of 1.0 and a positive end-expiratory pressure of 5 cmH2O. The shunt fraction was calculated after obtaining arterial and mixed venous blood gases. The trachea was extubated, and in randomized order each animal received either 10 L oxygen per minute or no oxygen via a pharyngeal catheter, and the time to desaturation to pulse oximeter saturation (SpO2) 60% was measured. If SpO2 was maintained at over 60%, the experiment ended when 10 minutes had elapsed. RESULTS: Without pharyngeal oxygen, the animals desaturated after 103 (88-111) seconds (median and interquartile range), whereas with pharyngeal oxygen five animals had a SpO2 > 60% for the 10-minute experimental period, one animal desaturated after 7 minutes, and two animals desaturated within 90 seconds (P < 0.016, Wilcoxon signed rank test). The time to desaturation was related to shunt fraction (R2 = 0.81, P = 0.002, linear regression); the animals that desaturated within 90 seconds had shunt fractions >40%, whereas the others had shunt fractions <25%. CONCLUSIONS: In this experimental acute lung injury model, pharyngeal oxygen administration markedly prolonged the time to severe desaturation during apnea, suggesting that this technique might be useful when intubating critically ill patients with acute respiratory failure.
