  • Earthquake Sources and Hazard in northern Central America
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Northern Central America is a tectonically complex zone defined by its borders with Cocos and North America plates. The Middle America subduction zone and the strike-slip motion along the North America-Caribbean plate boundary, in that order, control most of its deformation. The interaction between the different elements of the studied area is evident from the high seismicity in the region, especially along plate boundaries. Also in the interior of the region, seismicity shows that deformation takes place, though in lesser degree. In a time window of 30 years, three earthquakes with moment magnitude larger than 7 struck northern Central America evincing the need to estimate the seismic hazard for the zone. To tackle the problem, we compiled a catalogue of hypocenters commencing in 1964, defined seismogenic sources and described the evolution of earthquake activity through a Poisson model. Probabilistic seismic hazard (PSH) calculations for the next 50 years were performed. The highest estimate of seismic hazard was obtained for the zone adjacent to the subduction zone. Because of the fundamental importance of demarcating seismogenic sources in the PSH analysis, i.e. defining the seismotectonic model, we extended the catalogue to cover 102 years for the whole northern Central America. We have studied the North America-Caribbean plate boundary in order to refine the fault representation. Different techniques were used, like that of body-waveform modeling, allowing us to limit the extent of depth of faulting to 20 km. The seismic moment tensor was used to estimate the deformation velocities on known tectonic structures, including those of the Honduras depression and borderland faults. Finally, we made use of the Coulomb stress criterion to determine the relation between earthquake occurrence and static stress changes following major earthquakes.

  • Towards an Efficient Direct Glucose Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell System with Several Electro-Oxidation Units
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Electrochemical Science. - : ESG. - 1452-3981. ; 12:5, s. 3697-3708
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work covers the direct glucose anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEMFC) with near-neutralstate electrolyte of 0.1 M [PO4] (tot) having two high-performing anode electrocatalysts (Pt and PtNi) at 37 degrees C and at a glucose concentration of 0.1 M. The cathode catalyst in each test was a Pt supported on carbon (60 wt.%). The PtNi/C had a total metal content of 40 wt.% and the Pt/C 60 wt.%. The operation of the AEMFC was controlled by means of an in-house made electronic load with PI-controller (i.e. a feedback controller, which has proportional and integral action on control error signal). There were two primary objectives with this study. At first, to find out how the electrode modifications of the anode (i.e. by increasing the thicknesses of these electrodes by adding extra carbon) affect the Coulombic efficiency (CE, based on the exchange of two electrons) and the specific energy (SPE, Wh kg(-1)) values of the direct glucose AEMFC. Secondly, investigate how a two-stage fuel cell system with two fuel cells concatenated and used one after the other for the electrochemical oxidation of glucose, influence the CE and SPE values. The results show that the modified PtNi anode shows superior results for the AEMFC compared to our earlier results. As for the two-stage fuel cell system, it increased the average electric power (mWh) and SPE when compared to single fuel cell systems except when the higher selective anode catalyst (Pt) was used in the first fuel cell prior to the fuel cell in the second fuel cell containing the lower selective anode catalyst (PtNi).

  • Acceptance of Suicide in Moscow
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. - Berlin : Springer. - 0933-7954 .- 1433-9285. ; 46:8, s. 753-765
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Attitudes concerning the acceptability of suicidehave been emphasized as being important for understandingwhy levels of suicide mortality vary in different societiesacross the world. While Russian suicide mortalitylevels are among the highest in the world, not much isknown about attitudes to suicide in Russia. This study aimsto obtain a greater understanding about the levels andcorrelates of suicide acceptance in Russia. Methods Data from a survey of 1,190 Muscovites wereanalysed using logistic regression techniques. Suicideacceptance was examined among respondents in relation tosocial, economic and demographic factors as well as inrelation to attitudes towards other moral questions. Results The majority of interviewees (80%) expressedcondemnatory attitudes towards suicide, although menwere slightly less condemning. The young, the highereducated, and the non-religious were more accepting ofsuicide (OR[2). However, the two first-mentioned effectsdisappeared when controlling for tolerance, while a positiveeffect of lower education on suicide acceptanceappeared. When controlling for other independent variables,no significant effects were found on suicide attitudesby gender, one’s current family situation, or by healthrelatedor economic problems. Conclusions The most important determinants of therespondents’ attitudes towards suicide were their toleranceregarding other moral questions and their religiosity. Moretolerant views, in general, also seemed to explain the moreaccepting views towards suicide among the young and thehigher educated. Differences in suicide attitudes betweenthe sexes seemed to be dependent on differences in otherfactors rather than on gender per se. Suicide attitudes alsoseemed to be more affected by one’s earlier experiences interms of upbringing and socialization than by events andprocesses later in life.

  • Age, period and cohort effects on suicide mortality in Russia, 1956-2005
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2458. ; 17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Russian suicide mortality rates changed rapidly over the second half of the twentieth century. This study attempts to differentiate between underlying period and cohort effects in relation to the changes in suicide mortality in Russia between 1956 and 2005. Methods: Sex-and age-specific suicide mortality data were analyzed using an age-period-cohort (APC) approach. Descriptive analyses and APC modeling with log-linear Poisson regression were performed. Results: Strong period effects were observed for the years during and after Gorbachev ' s political reforms (including the anti-alcohol campaign) and for those following the break-up of the Soviet Union. After mutual adjustment, the cohort-and period-specific relative risk estimates for suicide revealed differing underlying processes. While the estimated period effects had an overall positive trend, cohort-specific developments indicated a positive trend for the male cohorts born between 1891 and 1931 and for the female cohorts born between 1891 and 1911, but a negative trend for subsequent cohorts. Conclusions: Our results indicate that the specific life experiences of cohorts may be important for variations in suicide mortality across time, in addition to more immediate effects of changes in the social environment.
