- This chapter proposes the theme of the history of travel and travelers for a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning history for active citizenship education. In particular, we analyze briefly on the historical ways: itineraries, routes, and cultures. From the routes of faith to the itineraries and routes of trade to the routes of conflict (European explorations and conquests in the Americas, from the crusades to the world wars) and their participants; your travel and trade. Over the millennia, the sea has been the main vector of trade and the Mediterranean ports have been crucial places for the economy. Networks of exchanges from foodstuffs to metals, from timber to grain, spices and textiles, men, women, slaves, yesterday as still today; the journeys and mirages of forced nomads. These are contents that through an active methodology can offer a critical approach to the phenomenon of travel considered decisive for the elaboration of European societies and make students acquire a vision of the complex relationships existing between different cultures through an approach by outcomes of history. Knowing the fundamental moments and processes of the European history of time travel with glances at world history starting also from personal and local history and expounding historical knowledge by making connections and arguing one’s own reflections, we believe can develop education for democratic citizenship through critical and responsible behavior inspired by the values of freedom and solidarity at all levels of organized life (local, national, European, and world).

Further Investigations of Convergence Results for Homogenization Problems with Various Combinations of Scales

- This thesis is based on six papers. We study the homogenization of selected parabolic problems with one or more microscopic scales in space and time, respectively. The approaches are prepared by means of certain methods, like two-scale convergence, multiscale convergence and also the evolution setting of multiscale convergence and very weak multiscale convergence. Paper I treats a linear parabolic homogenization problem with rapid spatial and temporal oscillations in perforated domains. Suitable results of two-scale convergence type are established. Paper II deals with further development of compactness results which can be used in the homogenization procedure engaging a certain limit condition. The homogenization procedure deals with a parabolic problem with a certain matching between a fast spatial and a fast temporal scale and a coefficient passing to zero that the time derivative is multiplied with. Papers III and IV are further generalizations of Paper II and investigate homogenization problems with different types of matching between the microscopic scales. Papers III and IV deal with one and two rapid scales in both space and time respectively. Paper V treats the nonlinearity of monotone parabolic problems with an arbitrary number of spatial and temporal scales by applying the perturbed test functions method together with multiscale convergence and very weak multiscale convergence adapted to the evolution setting. In Paper VI we discuss the relation between two-scale convergence and the unfolding method and potential extensions of existing results. The papers above are summarized in Chapter 4. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction to the topic and Chapters 2 and 3 are surveys over some important previous results.

- In this paper we prove a general homogenization result for monotone parabolic problems with an arbitrary number of microscopic scales in space as well as in time, where the scale functions are not necessarily powers of epsilon. The main tools for the homogenization procedure are multiscale convergence and very weak multiscale convergence, both adapted to evolution problems. At the end of the paper an example is given to concretize the use of the main result.

- Kapitlet ingår i en festskrift till professor emeritus Evert Vedung och har publicerats i Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis vid Uppsala universitet som ett av 25 kapitel i en forskarantlogi om utvärdering. I kapitlet återvänder jag till Vedungs rapport "Forskningens relevans, användbarhet, användning och nytta" från 1993. Det är en delrapport från ett treårigt FoU-projekt finansierat av Byggforskningsrådet (BFR) med syfte att utveckla en modell för att underlätta bedömning av FoU-kunskap. Ambitionen var att skapa checklistor som skulle kunna rutinisera ansökningar, beredning och utvärdering av forskning och därmed avgöra vad som var samhällsrelevant. Evert Vedung ville utreda hur forskningsresultat kan mätas med utgångspunkten att forskning måste vara användbar även utanför forskarsamhället. I kapitlet undersöker jag hur hans argument om vad som gör forskning relevant står sig trettio år senare. Framställningen präglas av dagens diskussioner om forskningens användbarhet med begrepp som kunskaps- och faktaresistens.
