  • Sequence and comparative analysis of the chicken genome provide unique perspectives on vertebrate evolution
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 432:7018, s. 695-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present here a draft genome sequence of the red jungle fowl, Gallus gallus. Because the chicken is a modern descendant of the dinosaurs and the first non-mammalian amniote to have its genome sequenced, the draft sequence of its genome--composed of approximately one billion base pairs of sequence and an estimated 20,000-23,000 genes--provides a new perspective on vertebrate genome evolution, while also improving the annotation of mammalian genomes. For example, the evolutionary distance between chicken and human provides high specificity in detecting functional elements, both non-coding and coding. Notably, many conserved non-coding sequences are far from genes and cannot be assigned to defined functional classes. In coding regions the evolutionary dynamics of protein domains and orthologous groups illustrate processes that distinguish the lineages leading to birds and mammals. The distinctive properties of avian microchromosomes, together with the inferred patterns of conserved synteny, provide additional insights into vertebrate chromosome architecture.

  • Treatment of CD40 ligand deficiency by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a survey of the European experience, 1993-2002
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 0006-4971 .- 1528-0020. ; 103:3, s. 1152-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CD40 ligand (CD40L) deficiency causes recurrent sinopulmonary infection, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and Cryptosporidium parvum infection. Approximately 40% to 50% of patients survive to the third decade: long-term survival is unclear. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is curative. We present a retrospective analysis of 38 European patients undergoing HSCT for CD40L deficiency in 8 European countries between 1993 and 2002. Donor stem cell source included 14 HLA-identical siblings, 22 unrelated donors, and 2 phenotypically matched parental stem cells (12 T-cell depleted). Of the patients, 34 engrafted and 26 (68%) survived; 3 had autologous reconstitution, 22 (58%) were cured, and 1 engrafted but has poor T-cell immune reconstitution. There were 18 evaluated patients who responded to vaccination. Of the patients, 12 (32%) died from infection-related complications, with severe cryptosporidiosis in 6. Grades 2 to 4 graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) associated with infection occurred in 6 of 12 fatal cases. HSCT cured 58% of patients, 72% of those without hepatic disease. Early T-cell function following whole marrow HSCT may limit cryptosporidial disease, but survival was similar after T-cell-depleted HSCT. Preexisting lung damage was the most important adverse risk factor. Further studies will determine optimal timing and type of HSCT.

  • Relative Frequencies of Blue Stragglers in Galactic Globular Clusters: Constraints for the Formation Mechanisms
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 604:2, s. 109-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss the main properties of the Galactic globular cluster (GC)blue straggler stars (BSSs), as inferred from our new catalog containingnearly 3000 BSSs. The catalog has been extracted from thephotometrically homogeneous V versus (B-V) color-magnitude diagrams(CMDs) of 56 GCs, based on Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images of theircentral cores. In our analysis, we used consistent relative distancesbased on the same photometry and calibration. The number of BSSs hasbeen normalized to obtain relative frequencies (FBSS) andspecific densities (NS) using different stellar populationsextracted from the CMD. The cluster FBSS is significantlysmaller than the relative frequency of field BSSs. We find a significantanticorrelation between the BSS relative frequency in a cluster and itstotal absolute luminosity (mass). There is no statistically significanttrend between the BSS frequency and the expected collision rate. Thevalue of FBSS does not depend on other cluster parameters, apart from a mild dependence on the central density. Post-core-collapseclusters act like normal clusters as far as the BSS frequency isconcerned. We also show that the BSS luminosity function for the mostluminous clusters is significantly different, with a brighter peak andextending to brighter luminosities than in the less luminous clusters. These results imply that the efficiency of BSS production mechanisms andtheir relative importance vary with the cluster mass.Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtainedat the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by theAssociation of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under NASAcontract NAS 5-26555.

  • Virtual Reality in Air Traffic Control
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEA 2000/HFES 2000 Congress. ; 6, s. 6-275
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Air traffic control is a highly spatial work. However, there are currently no three-dimensional tools used in the education of air traffic controllers or in the operational work of air traffic control. This paper presents results from some pilot studies aiming to: -Find new techniques for visualization and editing of trajectories in air traffic control. -Investigate how Virtual Reality (VR) can contribute to the air traffic controllers’ understanding of the air space and of certain situations. Two VR models have been developed. In one model a procedure called ‘holding’ is visualized. In the other VR model the different sectors in the air space are shown to make it easier for the air traffic controller to build a mental picture of a sector. In a training package the user can fly around in the sector and see how traffic passes through. These introductory studies indicate the usefulness of new ways to present the third dimension in a variety of air traffic situations. The tools can be used to visualize a three dimensional situation and help the air traffic controller to build a mental model The most obvious application area is in training and education of air traffic controllers but other applications such as an explanation and communication tool in the investigation after an incident are of interest.
