  • Electronic structure of highly ordered films of self-assembled graphitic nanocolumns
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 68:19, s. 195414-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Highly ordered, several nanometers thick films of alkylated large planar, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules have been grown on semi-metallic molybdenum disulfide substrates. The films are characterized by a two-dimensional lateral arrangement of columns standing at the surface on a macroscopic scale. The self-assembly of such insulated columns of face-to-face disks with surface-induced vertical alignment has been achieved directly from solution processing. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectra revealed a highly anisotropic quasi-one-dimensional electronic structure with an extended π-electronic wave function. An intermolecular dispersion of the highest occupied band of at least 0.15 eV along the stacking direction has been measured. A partial breakdown of the concept of quasimomentum due to the finite size of the nano-objects perpendicular to the stacks is observed.

  • A joint theoretical and experimental study on the electronic properties of phenyl-capped 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene oligomers
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 119:19, s. 10415-10420
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electronic structure of a series of phenyl-capped EDOT oligomers was studied using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, in combination with quantum-chemical methods. The bulk IP of the neutral PEDOT polymer was estimated to be 4.2 eV. The frontier band structue was predicted from the evolution of the spectral features in the studied series of oligomers.

  • The electronic structure of n- and p-doped phenyl-capped 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene trimer
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 118:14, s. 6495-6502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study was conducted on the effects of chemical doping on the chemical and electronic structure of condensed molecular solid films of the ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) trimer using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Phenyl-capped EDOT oligomers were potential candidates for molecular electronics applications and serve as model molecules for PEDOT. By combining UPS, XPS, and NEXAFS, a clear picture of the doping induced changes in the electronic structure of phenyl-capped EDOT-trimer was obtained.

  • Molecular evolution of the mammalian alpha 2B adrenergic receptor
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Molecular biology and evolution. - 0737-4038. ; 19:12, s. 2150-2160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The alpha 2B adrenergic receptor (A2AB) is a heptahelical G protein-coupled receptor for catecholamines. We compared the almost complete coding region (about 1,175 bp) of the A2AB gene from 48 mammalian species, including eight newly determined sequences, representing all the 18 eutherian and two marsupial orders. Comparison of the encoded proteins reveals that residues thought to be involved in agonist binding are highly conserved, as are the regions playing a role in G protein-coupling. The three extracellular loops are generally more variable than the transmembrane domains and two of the intracellular loops, indicating a lower functional constraint. However, the greatest variation is observed in the very long, third intracellular loop, where only a few residues and a polyglutamyl tract are preserved. Although this polyglutamyl domain displays a great variation in length, its presence in all described A2ABs confirms its proposed role in agonist-dependent phosphorylation of the third intracellular loop. Phylogenetic analyses of the A2AB data set, including Bayesian methods, recognized the superordinal clades Afrotheria, Laurasiatheria, and Euarchontoglires, in agreement with recent molecular evidence, albeit with lower support. Within Afrotheria, A2AB strongly supports the paenungulate clade and the association of the continental African otter shrew with Malagasy tenrecs. Among Laurasiatheria, A2AB confirms the nesting of whales within the artiodactyls, as a sister group to hippopotamus. Within the Euarchontoglires, there is constant support for rodent monophyly.

  • Recurrent sites for new centromere seeding
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Genome research. - : Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. - 1088-9051. ; 14:9, s. 1696-1703
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using comparative FISH and genomics, we have studied and compared the evolution of chromosome 3 in primates and two human neocentromere cases on the long arm of this chromosome. Our results show that one of the human neocentromere cases maps to the same 3q26 chromosomal region where a new centromere emerged in a common ancestor of the Old World monkeys ∼25-40 million years ago. Similarly, the locus in which a new centromere was seeded in the great apes' ancestor was orthologous to the site in which a new centromere emerged in the New World monkeys' ancestor. These data suggest the recurrent use of longstanding latent centromeres and that there is an inherent potential of these regions to form centromeres. The second human neocentromere case (3q24) revealed unprecedented features. The neocentromere emergence was not accompanied by any chromosomal rearrangement that usually triggers these events. Instead, it involved the functional inactivation of the normal centromere, and was present in an otherwise phenotypically normal individual who transmitted this unusual chromosome to the next generation. We propose that the formation of neocentromeres in humans and the emergence of new centromeres during the course of evolution share a common mechanism.
