  • Measurement of the branching fraction for the decay K-S -> pi mu nu with the KLOE detector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : ELSEVIER. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 804
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a sample of 300 million K-S mesons produced in phi -> KLKS decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DA Phi NE e(+)e(-) collider we have measured the branching fraction for the decay K-S -> pi mu nu. The K-S mesons are identified by the interaction of K-L mesons in the detector. The K-S -> pi mu nu decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and by a time-of-flight measurement. Signal efficiencies are evaluated with data control samples of K-L -> pi mu nu decays. A fit to the reconstructed muon mass distribution finds 7223 +/- 180 signal events. Normalising to the K-S -> pi(+)pi(-) decay events the result for the branching fraction is B(K-S -> pi mu nu) = (4.56 +/- 0.11(stat) +/- 0.17(syst)) x 10(-4). It is the first measurement of this decay mode and the result allows an independent determination of vertical bar V-us vertical bar and a test of the lepton-flavour universality. (c) 2020 The Author. • Precision tests of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry with entangled neutral kaons at KLOE
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quantum interference between the decays of entangled neutral kaons is studied in the process phi -> KSKL -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(+)pi(-), which exhibits the characteristic Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations that prevent both kaons to decay into pi(+)pi(-) at the same time. This constitutes a very powerful tool for testing at the utmost precision the quantum coherence of the entangled kaon pair state, and to search for tiny decoherence and CPT violation effects, which may be justified in a quantum gravity framework. The analysed data sample was collected with the KLOE detector at DA Phi NE, the Frascati phi-factory, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb(-1), i.e. to about 1.7 x 10(9) phi -> KSKL decays produced. From the fit of the observed Delta t distribution, being Delta t the difference of the kaon decay times, the decoherence and CPT violation parameters of various phenomenological models are measured with a largely improved accuracy with respect to previous analyses. The results are consistent with no deviation from quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry, while for some parameters the precision reaches the interesting level at which - in the most optimistic scenarios - quantum gravity effects might show up. They provide the most stringent limits up to date on the considered models.

  • Upper limit on the eta -> pi(+)pi(-) branching fraction with the KLOE experiment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : SPRINGER. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on an integrated luminosity of 1.61 fb(-1)e(+)e(-) collision data collected with the KLOE detector at DA Phi NE, the Frascati phi -factory, a search for the P- and CP-violating decay eta -> pi (+)pi (-) has been performed. Radiative phi -> eta gamma decay is exploited to access the eta mesons. No signal is observed in the pi (+)pi (-) invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit on the branching fraction at 90% confidence level is determined to be B(eta -> pi (+)pi (-)) < 4.9 x 10(-6), which is approximately three times smaller than the previous KLOE result. From the combination of these two measurements we get B( -> pi (+)pi (-)) < 4.4 x 10(-6) at 90% confidence level.

  • Cosmic Rays Investigation by the PAMELA experiment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PAMELA (Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics) is a satellite-borne experiment. It was launched on June 15th 2006 from the Baikonur space centre on board the Russian Resurs-DK1 satellite. For about 10 years PAMELA took data, giving a fundamental contribution to the cosmic ray physics. It made high-precision measurements of the charged component of the cosmic radiation challenging the standard model of the mechanisms of production, acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays in the galaxy and in the heliosphere. PAMELA gave results on different topics on a very wide range of energy. Moreover, the long PAMELA life gives the possibility to study the variation of the proton, electron and positron spectra during the last solar minimum. The time dependence of the cosmic-ray proton and helium nuclei from the solar minimum through the following period of solar maximum activity is currently being studied. Low energy particle spectra were accurately measured also for various solar events that occurred during the PAMELA mission. In this paper a review of main PAMELA results will be reported.

  • Time dependence of the proton and helium flux measured by PAMELA
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The energy spectra of galactic cosmic rays carry fundamental information regarding their origin and propagation, but, near Earth, cosmic rays are significantly affected by the solar magnetic field which changes over time. The time dependence of proton and electron spectra were measured from July 2006 to December 2009 by PAMELA experiment, that is a ballooon-borne experiment collecting data since 15 June 2006. These studies allowed to obtain a more complete description of the cosmic radiation, providing fundamental information about the transport and modulation of cosmic rays inside the heliosphere. The study of the time dependence of the cosmic-ray protons and helium nuclei from the unusual 23rd solar minimum through the following period of solar maximum activity is presented.

  • Measurement of the K-S ? : pe? branching fraction with the KLOE experiment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ratio R = gamma(K-S -> pi e nu)/gamma(KS -> pi(+)pi(-)) has been measured with a sample of 300 million KS mesons produced in phi -KLKS decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DA Phi NE e(+)e(-) collider. K-S -> pi e nu events are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and time-of-flight measurements. Data control samples of K-L -> pi e nu decays are used to evaluate signal selection efficiencies. With 49647 +/- 316 signal events we measure R = (1.0421 +/- 0.0066(stat) +/- 0.0075(syst)) x 10(-3). The combination with our previous measurement gives R = (1.0338 +/- 0.0054(stat) +/- 0.0064(syst)) x 10(-3). From this value we derive the branching fraction B(K-S -> pi e nu) = (7.153 +/- 0.037(stat)+/- 0.044(syst)) x 10(-4) and f(+)(0)|V-us| = 0.2170 +/- 0.009.

  • Direct tests of T, CP, CPT symmetries in transitions of neutral K mesons with the KLOE experiment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 845
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tests of the T, CP and CPT symmetries in the neutral kaon system are performed by the direct comparison of the probabilities of a kaon transition process to its symmetry-conjugate. The exchange of in and out states required for a genuine test involving an antiunitary transformation implied by time-reversal is implemented exploiting the entanglement of K0K0 pairs produced at a 0 -factory.A data sample collected by the KLOE experiment at DAONE corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb-1 is analysed to study the At distributions of the 0 -> KSKL -> pi+pi- pi +/- e -/+ v and 0 -> KSKL -> pi +/- e -/+ v3 pi 0 processes, with At the difference of the kaon decay times. A comparison of the measured At distributions in the asymptotic region At â … iS allows to test for the first time T and CPT symmetries in kaon transitions with a precision of few percent, and to observe CP violation with this novel method.

  • Short- and long-term variability of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Reviews Earth & Environment. - : Springer Nature. - 2662-138X. ; 5, s. 193-210
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The variability of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets occurs on various timescales and is important for projections of sea level rise; however, there are substantial uncertainties concerning future ice-sheet mass changes. In this Review, we explore the degree to which short-term fluctuations and extreme glaciological events reflect the ice sheets’ long-term evolution and response to ongoing climate change. Short-term (decadal or shorter) variations in atmospheric or oceanic conditions can trigger amplifying feedbacks that increase the sensitivity of ice sheets to climate change. For example, variability in ocean-induced and atmosphere-induced melting can trigger ice thinning, retreat and/or collapse of ice shelves, grounding-line retreat, and ice flow acceleration. The Antarctic Ice Sheet is especially prone to increased melting and ice sheet collapse from warm ocean currents, which could be accentuated with increased climate variability. In Greenland both high and low melt anomalies have been observed since 2012, highlighting the influence of increased interannual climate variability on extreme glaciological events and ice sheet evolution. Failing to adequately account for such variability can result in biased projections of multi-decadal ice mass loss. Therefore, future research should aim to improve climate and ocean observations and models, and develop sophisticated ice sheet models that are directly constrained by observational records and can capture ice dynamical changes across various timescales.

  • EAU-ESMO Consensus Statements on the Management of Advanced and Variant Bladder Cancer – An International Collaborative Multistakeholder Effort : Under the Auspices of the EAU-ESMO Guidelines Committees
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Urology. - : Elsevier. - 0302-2838 .- 1873-7560. ; 77:2, s. 223-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Although guidelines exist for advanced and variant bladder cancer management, evidence is limited/conflicting in some areas and the optimal approach remains controversial.OBJECTIVE: To bring together a large multidisciplinary group of experts to develop consensus statements on controversial topics in bladder cancer management.DESIGN: A steering committee compiled proposed statements regarding advanced and variant bladder cancer management which were assessed by 113 experts in a Delphi survey. Statements not reaching consensus were reviewed; those prioritised were revised by a panel of 45 experts prior to voting during a consensus conference.SETTING: Online Delphi survey and consensus conference.PARTICIPANTS: The European Association of Urology (EAU), the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), experts in bladder cancer management.OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Statements were ranked by experts according to their level of agreement: 1-3 (disagree), 4-6 (equivocal), and 7-9 (agree). A priori (level 1) consensus was defined as ≥70% agreement and ≤15% disagreement, or vice versa. In the Delphi survey, a second analysis was restricted to stakeholder group(s) considered to have adequate expertise relating to each statement (to achieve level 2 consensus).RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: Overall, 116 statements were included in the Delphi survey. Of these statements, 33 (28%) achieved level 1 consensus and 49 (42%) achieved level 1 or 2 consensus. At the consensus conference, 22 of 27 (81%) statements achieved consensus. These consensus statements provide further guidance across a broad range of topics, including the management of variant histologies, the role/limitations of prognostic biomarkers in clinical decision making, bladder preservation strategies, modern radiotherapy techniques, the management of oligometastatic disease, and the evolving role of checkpoint inhibitor therapy in metastatic disease.CONCLUSIONS: These consensus statements provide further guidance on controversial topics in advanced and variant bladder cancer management until a time when further evidence is available to guide our approach.PATIENT SUMMARY: This report summarises findings from an international, multistakeholder project organised by the EAU and ESMO. In this project, a steering committee identified areas of bladder cancer management where there is currently no good-quality evidence to guide treatment decisions. From this, they developed a series of proposed statements, 71 of which achieved consensus by a large group of experts in the field of bladder cancer. It is anticipated that these statements will provide further guidance to health care professionals and could help improve patient outcomes until a time when good-quality evidence is available.
