  • Exploring the Performativity Turn in Management Studies
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One of the contemporary “turns” in management studies is the “performativity” turn. In this paper, we present a genealogy of the concept of performativity as it has been used in management and organization studies (MOS). Starting with the work of Austin, Bateson, Goffman and Lyotard, we move on to more recent debates surrounding the use of the concept by Butler and the STS researchers Callon, Latour and Law, as well as how their ideas have been further translated within MOS. The focus is on how the concept is defined and on the areas of study where performativity has been used. Taken together, the approach to performativity employed has implications for how the concept is understood and translated. Finally, we discuss the particular ontological position of the performative perspective, and its methodological consequences.

  • I förändringens tid - vardagsberättelser från Försvarsmakten
  • 2012

  • Exercising social responsibility in downsizing: enrolling and mobilizing actors at a Swedish high-tech company
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Organization Studies. - 0170-8406. ; 32:7, s. 897-919
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper critically examines the claim made by previous research that companies exercise corporate social responsibility (CSR) by responding to stakeholder interests. It is based on a field study of the events following the announcement of collective redundancies at a Swedish high-tech company. Although more than 10,000 workers were dismissed, the company was accepted as being socially responsible. The study reveals that this outcome was the result of a process whereby corporate representatives managed to enrol and mobilize a network of actors into being faithful to, and defending, their definition of social responsibility. This indicates that a company can assume an active role in the construction of the same network of actors that it is asked to respond to and impose upon other actors its own definition of what it means to be socially responsible. As a result, the translation of CSR within the network of actors may reinforce the powerful position of the company, rather than curb it.

  • Boundary stories: Constructing the Validation Centre in West Sweden
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The role of stories in organizing has traditionally been examined within the context of specific organizations, communities of practice, or social worlds. The study reported here describes the establishment in West Sweden of a centre for developing methods that allow for the recognition of prior learning in people seeking employment. In the report, we highlight the role of stories and storytelling in coordination and organizing between and among organizations, but also between and among and social worlds. We refer to such stories as boundary stories, and argue that they are not only the means for creating a shared understanding and facilitating joint actions among a number of public and private organizations, but that they also help to hide potential conflicts, paradoxes, and contradictions among actors.

  • Classifying difference in organizing, or how to create monsters
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal. - 2040-7149. ; 33:7, s. 614-632
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the operation of classification mechanisms in organizational life, and how they construct the skills and knowledge of initially marginalized client groups. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on an ethnographically inspired case study of a Swedish labour market procedure, which was designed to validate the skills and knowledge of non-western immigrant job-seekers. Qualitative data were generated through observations, in-depth interviews and document analysis. Findings The study found that, contrary to policy-makers’ intentions, the validation procedure ended up dissociating the non-western job-seekers’ heterogeneous experiences, skills and knowledge from the organizing processes of the labour market, displacing them beyond the boundaries of legitimate knowledge, and reproducing their marginalized position on the labour market. As non-western skills and knowledge were found unclassifiable according to the validation procedure, they were deemed too different and monstrous. Research limitations/implications – The research approach and the specific institutional context of Swedish immigration and labour market policy means that the research results are not readily generalizable to other empirical contexts. Therefore, studies outside of Sweden are needed to generate knowledge about similar policies in other countries. Practical implications – The classification of skills and knowledge and the organizing of difference does not primarily require new tools and methods, but a whole new perspective, which recognizes the multiplicity and heterogeneity of unusual skills and knowledge as an important part of labour market integration. Originality/value – The paper examines the monstrous aspects of classification mechanisms within the empirical context of labour market integration efforts, which is hitherto underexplored in the literature on the management of difference and diversity.

  • Frozen fish and mummies: On the role of preserved objects in organizing
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper explores the efforts to construct a standard for competence development and management in Sweden. The apparently absurd idea – to standardize processes of competence development to gain a competitive advantage – manages to seduce many different people, groups and organizations over many years. We frame these developments and activities as the construction of an actor network, where attempts are made to translate the global idea of competence development into an object in order to be spread further and become a widely used management technology. When this translation fails new objects are constructed to aid in the translations. We argue that such an artefact-centred approach (Pentland & Feldman, 2008), while common in contemporary management does not translate well into intended actions. The framing of the paper reveals that the traditional account of “launch” and “implementation” is too simple to grasp all the complexity of introducing new technologies and practices.
