  • Overview of MAST results
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 55:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Mega Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST) programme is strongly focused on addressing key physics issues in preparation for operation of ITER as well as providing solutions for DEMO design choices. In this regard, MAST has provided key results in understanding and optimizing H-mode confinement, operating with smaller edge localized modes (ELMs), predicting and handling plasma exhaust and tailoring auxiliary current drive. In all cases, the high-resolution diagnostic capability on MAST is complemented by sophisticated numerical modelling to facilitate a deeper understanding. Mitigation of ELMs with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) with toroidal mode number n(RMP) = 2, 3, 4, 6 has been demonstrated: at high and low collisionality; for the first ELM following the transition to high confinement operation; during the current ramp-up; and with rotating n(RMP) = 3 RMPs. n(RMP) = 4, 6 fields cause less rotation braking whilst the power to access H-mode is less with n(RMP) = 4 than n(RMP) = 3, 6. Refuelling with gas or pellets gives plasmas with mitigated ELMs and reduced peak heat flux at the same time as achieving good confinement. A synergy exists between pellet fuelling and RMPs, since mitigated ELMs remove fewer particles. Inter-ELM instabilities observed with Doppler backscattering are consistent with gyrokinetic simulations of micro-tearing modes in the pedestal. Meanwhile, ELM precursors have been strikingly observed with beam emission spectroscopy (BES) measurements. A scan in beta at the L-H transition shows that pedestal height scales strongly with core pressure. Gyro-Bohm normalized turbulent ion heat flux (as estimated from the BES data) is observed to decrease with increasing tilt of the turbulent eddies. Fast ion redistribution by energetic particle modes depends on density, and access to a quiescent domain with 'classical' fast ion transport is found above a critical density. Highly efficient electron Bernstein wave current drive (1 A W-1) has been achieved in solenoid-free start-up. A new proton detector has characterized escaping fusion products. Langmuir probes and a high-speed camera suggest filaments play a role in particle transport in the private flux region whilst coherence imaging has measured scrape-off layer (SOL) flows. BOUT++ simulations show that fluxes due to filaments are strongly dependent on resistivity and magnetic geometry of the SOL, with higher radial fluxes at higher resistivity. Finally, MAST Upgrade is due to begin operation in 2016 to support ITER preparation and importantly to operate with a Super-X divertor to test extended leg concepts for particle and power exhaust.

  • Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning relations in European forests depend on environmental context
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Ecology Letters. - : Wiley. - 1461-023X .- 1461-0248. ; 20:11, s. 1414-1426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The importance of biodiversity in supporting ecosystem functioning is generally well accepted. However, most evidence comes from small-scale studies, and scaling-up patterns of biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (B-EF) remains challenging, in part because the importance of environmental factors in shaping B-EF relations is poorly understood. Using a forest research platform in which 26 ecosystem functions were measured along gradients of tree species richness in six regions across Europe, we investigated the extent and the potential drivers of context dependency of B-EF relations. Despite considerable variation in species richness effects across the continent, we found a tendency for stronger B-EF relations in drier climates as well as in areas with longer growing seasons and more functionally diverse tree species. The importance of water availability in driving context dependency suggests that as water limitation increases under climate change, biodiversity may become even more important to support high levels of functioning in European forests.

  • Continental mapping of forest ecosystem functions reveals a high but unrealised potential for forest multifunctionality
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Ecology Letters. - : Wiley. - 1461-023X .- 1461-0248. ; 21:1, s. 31-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humans require multiple services from ecosystems, but it is largely unknown whether trade-offs between ecosystem functions prevent the realisation of high ecosystem multifunctionality across spatial scales. Here, we combined a comprehensive dataset (28 ecosystem functions measured on 209 forest plots) with a forest inventory dataset (105,316 plots) to extrapolate and map relationships between various ecosystem multifunctionality measures across Europe. These multifunctionality measures reflected different management objectives, related to timber production, climate regulation and biodiversity conservation/recreation. We found that trade-offs among them were rare across Europe, at both local and continental scales. This suggests a high potential for win-win' forest management strategies, where overall multifunctionality is maximised. However, across sites, multifunctionality was on average 45.8-49.8% below maximum levels and not necessarily highest in protected areas. Therefore, using one of the most comprehensive assessments so far, our study suggests a high but largely unrealised potential for management to promote multifunctional forests.

  • Worldwide circulation of HSV-2 x HSV-1 recombinant strains
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Homo sapiens harbor two distinct, medically significant species of simplexviruses, herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 and HSV-2, with estimated divergence 6-8 million years ago (MYA). Unexpectedly, we found that circulating HSV-2 strains can contain HSV-1 DNA segments in three distinct genes. Using over 150 genital swabs from North and South America and Africa, we detected recombinantsworldwide. Common, widely distributed gene UL39 genotypes are parsimoniously explained by an initial >457 basepair (bp) HSV-1 x HSV-2 crossover followed by back-recombination to HSV-2. Blocks of >244 and >539 bp of HSV-1 DNA within genes UL29 and UL30, respectively, have reached near fixation, with a minority of strains retaining sequences we posit as ancestral HSV-2. Our data add to previous in vitroand animal work, implying that in vivo cellular co-infection with HSV-1 and HSV-2 yields viable interspecies recombinants in the natural human host.

  • Can Hymenoscyphus fraxineus infect hardy members of the Oleaceae other than ash species?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Forest Pathology. - : Wiley. - 1437-4781 .- 1439-0329. ; 45, s. 426-429
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interaction between the ash dieback fungus, Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, and two commonly grown members of the Oleaceae (Forsythiaxintermedia Lynwood' and Ligustrum vulgare) was investigated. Shoots were inoculated with three isolates of H.fraxineus and harvested after 2 and 10weeks. DNA was extracted from tissue collected at the point of inoculation, as well as 15mm below and above (distal), and analysed using fungal-specific ITS primers and specific primers for H.fraxineus. The fungus was frequently detected in tissue at the point of inoculation, but rarely in distal samples. There was no evidence that H.fraxineus was pathogenic on either of the two oleaceous species over the duration of the experiment.

  • Dual-Fiber Approach toward Flexible Multifunctional Hybrid Materials
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : Wiley. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028. ; 28:27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multifunctional paper-like materials containing metal oxide nanofibers are important for flexible electronics and other redox-based applications, but are often prone to mechanical failure. This work presents the coassembly of V2O5 nanofibers (VNFs) in a dual-fiber approach together with cellulose nanofibers to produce tough (0.26 MJ m(-3)), but strong (250 MPa) flexible hybrid materials. Indeed, nanotensile tests reveal a significant increase in toughness (200%) and strength (85%) of the hybrid films as compared to pristine VNF films. The microstructure of the films shows a transition from an anisotropic texture for the single-component films to an isotropic, entangled network in case of the hybrid films, which facilitates effective fracture resistance mechanisms. The flexible hybrid films display high electrical conductivity (0.2 S cm(-1)) and elastic properties originating from V2O5 nanofibers with excellent toughness and transparency endowed by the cellulose nanofibers. The self-supported hybrid films show reversible electrochromic behavior without the need for common substrates such as conducting indium tin oxide glass. It is conceivable that these self-supported films can be exploited in the future in smart, flexible optoelectronic devices.
