  • Polarizing a stored proton beam by spin flip?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 674:4-5, s. 269-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss polarizing a proton beam in a storage ring, either by selective removal or by spin flip of the stored ions. Prompted by recent, conflicting calculations, we have carried out a measurement of the spin-flip cross section in low-energy electron–proton scattering. The experiment uses the cooling electron beam at COSY as an electron target. The measured cross sections are too small for making spin flip a viable tool in polarizing a stored beam. This invalidates a recent proposal to use co-moving polarized positrons to polarize a stored antiproton beam.

  • Common sequence variants on 20q11.22 confer melanoma susceptibility
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-1718 .- 1061-4036. ; 40:7, s. 838-840
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We conducted a genome-wide association pooling study for cutaneous melanoma and performed validation in samples totaling 2,019 cases and 2,105 controls. Using pooling, we identified a new melanoma risk locus on chromosome 20 (rs910873 and rs1885120), with replication in two further samples (combined P < 1 x 10(-15)). The per allele odds ratio was 1.75 (1.53, 2.01), with evidence for stronger association in early-onset cases.

  • Prolonged prophylaxis against venous thromboembolism with enoxaparin in patients undergoing cancer surgery : long-term survival analysis
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Phlebology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0268-3555 .- 1758-1125. ; 21:4, s. 195-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: ENOXACAN II was a randomized, double-blind trial that showed prolonged (four-week) thromboprophylaxis with enoxaparin to be more effective than and as safe as standard (one-week) thromboprophylaxis in patients undergoing surgery with a curative intent for abdominopelvic cancer. This follow-up study compared long-term, all-cause mortality in both groups. Methods: Survival rates were calculated on the randomized, treated population (n = 501). The primary efficacy endpoint was survival at one year. An exploratory analysis including survival data up to 44 months was performed. Because some patients were deemed to have undergone palliative as opposed to curative surgery, and there was a significant difference between the treatment groups in the percentage of patients undergoing palliative surgery, the survival analyses were adjusted for the type of surgery performed. Results: When adjusted for type of surgery, there was a trend towards reduced mortality among patients undergoing palliative surgery in the prolonged prophylaxis group (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.598, P = 0.3565) that became more pronounced beyond the pre-specified one-year follow-up period (HR = 0.469, P = 0.078). This trend may reflect a beneficial effect of prolonged prophylaxis on survival in the palliative surgery group (one-year survival 65.4 versus 50% for standard prophylaxis). In patients undergoing curative surgery, one-year survival rates were equal in the standard and prolonged prophylaxis groups (93.8 and 93.2%, respectively). Conclusion: Prolonged thromboprophylaxis with enoxaparin may affect long-term survival in palliative surgery for cancer, but further investigation is warranted.

  • Anthropometry and Esophageal Cancer Risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention. - 1538-7755 .- 1055-9965. ; 18:7, s. 2079-2089
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Increasing evidence suggests that general obesity [measured by body mass index (BMI)] is positively associated with risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). In contrast, previous studies have shown inverse relations with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, it is still unclear whether body fat distribution, particularly abdominal obesity, is associated with each type of esophageal cancer. Methods: We applied multivariable adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression to investigate the association between anthropometric measures and risk of EAC and ESCC among 346,554 men and women participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. All statistical tests were two sided. Results: During 8.9 years of follow-up, we documented 88 incident cases of EAC and 110 cases of ESCC. BMI, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were positively associated with EAC risk [highest versus lowest quintile; relative risk (RR), 2.60; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 1.23-5.51; P-trend < 0.01; RR, 3.07; 95% CI, 1.35-6.98; P-trend < 0.003; and RR, 2.12; 95% CI, 0.98-4.57; P-trend < 0.004]. In contrast, BMI and waist circumference were inversely related to ESCC risk, whereas WHR showed no association with ESCC. In stratified analyses, BMI and waist circumference were significantly inversely related to ESCC only among smokers but not among nonsmokers. However, when controlled for BMI, we found positive associations for waist circumference and WHR with ESCC, and these associations were observed among smokers and nonsmokers. Conclusion: General and abdominal obesity were associated with higher EAC risk. Further, our study suggests that particularly an abdominal body fat distribution might also be a risk factor for ESCC. • Control of seed-borne pathogens on legumes by microbial and other alternative seed treatments
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European journal of plant pathology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0929-1873 .- 1573-8469. ; 123:2, s. 139-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Greenhouse trials were carried out in order to test the efficacy of different seed treatments as alternatives to chemicals against Colletotrichum lindemuthianum cause of anthracnose on bean and Ascochyta spp. cause of Ascochyta blights on pea, respectively. Resistance inducers, commercially formulated microorganisms, non-formulated selected strains of different microorganisms (fungi, bacteria and yeasts) and plant extracts were applied as dry or liquid seed treatments on naturally infested seeds. Seedling emergence and disease incidence and/or severity were recorded. Almost all seed treatments turned out to be ineffective in controlling the Ascochyta infections, which is in line with the literature stating that these pathogens are difficult to control. The only alternative treatments that gave some control of Ascochyta spp. were thyme oil and a strain of Clonostachys rosea. The resistance inducers tested successfully controlled infections of bean by C. lindemuthianum. Among the formulated microorganisms, Bacillus subtilis-based formulations provided the best protection from anthracnose. Some strains of Pseudomonas putida, a disease-suppressive, saprophytic strain of Fusarium oxysporum and the mustard powder-based product Tillecur also proved to be effective against bean anthracnose. However, among the resistance inducers as well as among the other groups, certain agents caused a significant reduction of plant emergence. Different alternative seed treatments can therefore be used for the control of C. lindemuthianum on bean, while on pea only thyme oil and a strain of Clonostachys rosea showed some effectiveness against Ascochyta spp.
