  • Gender and electoral communication: How differences in non-verbal and verbal behavior lead to different evaluations of male and female politicians
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 Annual American Political Science Meeting.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents the results of an experiment in political communication that was designed to maximize what McDermott (2002) terms “experimental realism.” Participants are presented with a believable and engaging stimulus in the form of a candidate webcast. They view one of four different versions of a political speech delivered by a candidate, who is played by a male actor or by a female actor, depending on the treatment. Physiological response technology is used to capture participants’ unconscious reactions to the speech. The objective is to see how both the verbal and non-verbal behavior of male and female candidates influences how they are evaluated.

  • How anxiety affects support for third-placed parties in winner-take-all contexts
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 Annual European Political Science Association Meeting.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When more than two parties compete, winner-take-all elections can potentially lead to significant policy losses for supporters of smaller parties who stand no chance of winning. However, despite the pressure to coordinate on a viable party, sizable minorities support third-placed parties with little or nil hope of winning. This paper aims to understand how anxiety at the time of the vote affects support for third parties in winner-take-all elections. Two hundred and seventy four participants recruited from the general voting population of Quebec took part in a voting experiment in 2013. Results suggest that anxiety increases the likelihood of switching only under specific conditions, and that its role depends on the object in the electoral context generating it. The paper proposes that the impact of anxiety should be reconceptualized to take more into account the difficulty of the decision making.

  • Communicating the European Idea: A Visual Analysis of Parties' European Elections Manifestos Since 1979
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 Annual European Political Science Association Meeting.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article presents a first cohesive effort to study the European identity among one of the most important category of political elites, the national parties. Based on research on European identity at the individual level, we analyze the display of EU visual symbols on the first page of parties’ European Elections Manifestos, as a measure of parties’ European affective and instrumental identities. By making use of a novel and comprehensive dataset covering 681 manifestos of 237 parties across a period of 30 years, we show that parties’ display of European identity symbols is influenced by both party strategies and the public’s affective attachment to Europe, while fluctuating over time
