  • Modulation of Ion and Electron Pitch Angle in the Presence of Large-amplitude, Low-frequency, Left-hand Circularly Polarized Electromagnetic Waves Observed by MMS
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 867:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most studies on low-frequency electromagnetic cyclotron waves have assumed a small wave amplitude, which ensures the reasonable application of linear and quasi-linear theories. However, the topic of large-amplitude electromagnetic cyclotron waves has not received much attention. Using Magnetospheric Multiscale measurements, this study observes low-frequency, left-hand circularly polarized electromagnetic waves with magnetic fluctuation similar to 1-2 nT in the dusk flank side of the Earth's magnetosheath. Considering the ambient magnetic field similar to 15 nT therein, the relative wave amplitude is of the order of 0.1. These large magnetic field fluctuations result in a periodic variation of the ion pitch angle. The electron pitch angle exhibits a localized distribution feature with a timescale approximating the wave period. Moreover, some electrons are trapped at a pitch angle similar to 90 degrees, and the trapping is more remarkable as strong waves arise. These two features of the electron pitch angle distribution imply that the trapping of electrons (partly) results from large-amplitude electromagnetic cyclotron fluctuations. Our results illustrate the important role of large-amplitude electromagnetic cyclotron waves on the dynamics of charged particles.

  • Genome-wide association study in 79,366 European-ancestry individuals informs the genetic architecture of 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vitamin D is a steroid hormone precursor that is associated with a range of human traits and diseases. Previous GWAS of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations have identified four genome-wide significant loci (GC, NADSYN1/DHCR7, CYP2R1, CYP24A1). In this study, we expand the previous SUNLIGHT Consortium GWAS discovery sample size from 16,125 to 79,366 (all European descent). This larger GWAS yields two additional loci harboring genome-wide significant variants (P = 4.7x10(-9) at rs8018720 in SEC23A, and P = 1.9x10(-14) at rs10745742 in AMDHD1). The overall estimate of heritability of 25-hydroxyvitamin D serum concentrations attributable to GWAS common SNPs is 7.5%, with statistically significant loci explaining 38% of this total. Further investigation identifies signal enrichment in immune and hematopoietic tissues, and clustering with autoimmune diseases in cell-type-specific analysis. Larger studies are required to identify additional common SNPs, and to explore the role of rare or structural variants and gene-gene interactions in the heritability of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels.

  • A direct calibration of thtae IRX-β relation in Lyman-break Galaxies at z = 3-5
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 479:4, s. 4355-4366
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use a sample of 4209 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z ≃ 3, 4, and 5 in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Ultra Deep Survey field to investigate the relationship between the observed slope of the stellar continuum emission in the ultraviolet, β, and the thermal dust emission, as quantified via the so-called 'infrared excess' (IRX=LIR/LUV). Through a stacking analysis, we directly measure the 850-μm flux density of LBGs in our deep (0.9 mJy) James Clerk Maxwell Telescope SCUBA-2 850-μm map as well as deep public Herschel/SPIRE 250-, 350-, and 500-μm imaging. We establish functional forms for the IRX-β relation to z ~ 5, confirming that there is no significant redshift evolution of the relation, and that the resulting average IRX-β curve is consistent with a Calzetti-like attenuation law. Comparing our results with recent works in the literature, we confirm that discrepancies in the slope of the IRX-β relation are driven by biases in the methodology used to determine the ultraviolet slopes. Consistent results are found when IRX-β is evaluated by stacking in bins of stellar mass, and we argue that the near-linear IRX-M* relationship is a better proxy for correcting observed ultraviolet luminosities to total star formation rates, provided an accurate handle on M* and also gives clues as to the physical driver of the role of dust-obscured star formation in high-redshift galaxies.
