- The consumption of nondigestible carbohydrates is perceived as beneficial by health professionals and the general public, but the translation of this information into dietary practice, public health recommendations, and regulatory policy has proved difficult. Nondiaestible carbohydrates are a heterogeneous entity, and their definition is problematic. Without a means to characterize the dietary components associated with particular health benefits, specific attributions of these cannot be made. Food labeling for "fiber" constituents can be given only in a general context, and the development of health policy, dietary advice, and education, and informed public understanding of nondigestible carbohydrates are limited. There have, however, been several important developments in our thinking about nondigestible carbohydrates during the past few years. The concept of fiber has expanded to include a range of nondigestible carbohydrates. Their fermentation, fate, and effects in the colon have become a defining characteristic; human milk, hitherto regarded as devoid of nondigestible carbo-hydrates, is now recognized as a source for infants, and the inclusion of nondigestible carbohydrates in the diet has been promoted for their "prebiotic" effects. Therefore, a review of the importance of nondigestible carbohydrates in the diets of infants and young children is timely. The aims of this commentary are to clarify the current definitions of nondigestible carbohydrates, to review published evidence for their biochemical, physiologic, nutritional, and clinical effects, and to discuss issues involved in defining dietary guidelines for infants and young children. Interactions between pH-sensitive liposomes and model membranes

- The structure and dynamics of two different pH-sensitive liposome systems were investigated by means of cryo-transmission electron microscopy and different photophysical techniques. Both systems consisted of dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE) and contained either oleic acid (OA) or a novel acid-labile polyethylene glycol-conjugated lipid (DHCho-MPEG5000) as stabiliser. Proton induced leakage, lipid mixing and structural changes were studied in the absence and presence of EPC liposomes, as well as in the presence of liposomes designed to model the endosome membrane. Neither DHCho-MPEG5000- nor OA-stabilised liposomes showed any tendency for fusion with pure EPC liposomes or endosome-like liposomes composed of EPC/DOPE/SM/Cho (40/20/6/34 mol.%). Our investigations showed, however, that incorporation of lipids from the pH-sensitive liposomes into the endosome membrane may lead to increased permeability and formation of non-lamellar structures. Taken together the results suggest that the observed ability of DOPE-containing liposomes to mediate cytoplasmic delivery of hydrophilic molecules cannot be explained by a mechanism based on a direct, and non-leaky, fusion between the liposome and endosome membranes. A mechanism involving destabilisation of the endosome membrane due to incorporation of DOPE, seems more plausible.

- In this work we present the dielectric function of hexagonal 4H- and 6H-SiC polytypes as well as the cubic 3C-SiC polytype in the energy range from 3.5 to 10 eV measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry. We operated with synchrotron radiation at the Berlin electron storage ring BESSY I. Additionally the samples were investigated by atomic force microscopy to correct the measured dielectric function for the influence of surface roughness. The experimental results are compared to theoretical calculations.

- Measurements of the dielectric function components parallel and perpendicular to the optical axis of wurtzite GaN are presented. The results are obtained on a multilayer AlxGa1-xN / GaN film grown on gamma -LiAlO2 which exhibits a very small amount of Al (x<0.1) in the uppermost layer. We use the spectroscopic ellipsometry to determine (omega) around the interband critical points of GaN up to 9 eV. Since the optical axis of the films are parallel to the surface, a separation of the different epsilon components is possible. The line shape of the measured tensor components e(parallel to) and epsilon (perpendicular to) is in very good agreement with results of recently published band-structure calculations. By comparison with the calculations we assign structures in the dielectric function to critical points in the Brillouin zone. In addition, a comparison with similar spectra for CdS and CdSe is presented, together with a discussion of possible spin-orbit splitting effects.
