  • Koraller och dinoflagellater — ett marint partnerskap
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Svensk Botanisk Tidskrift. - 0039-646X. ; 100:4, s. 263-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Most reef-building corals live in partnership with so-called zooxanthellae in a mutually dependent way. Zooxanthellae are unicellular algae (dinoflagellates) inside the coral polyps, and by their photosynthesis they contribute to the sustenance of the coral. Corals already existed during the Cambrian period, more than 500 million years ago, bu these were very different from today's reef-building species. The scleractinians or stony star corals, the main structural component in modern reefs, did not appear until after the great end-Permian extinction 261 million years ago. The dinoflagellate genus Symbiodinium, which forms the symbiosis with the corals, also stems from this time. The coral reefs of the world, the marine ecosystems with the highest biological diversity, are now endangered due to coastal "development", oil spills and other local pollution, acidification due to atmospheric carbon dioxide increase, and climate change.

  • American Stars 'n' bards, and Swedish Reviewers : The Swedish Field of Literary Criticism and the Local Symbolic Reproduction of Global U.S. Authors
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: American Studies in Scandinavia. - 0044-8060. ; 40:02-jan, s. 140-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article looks at the way U.S. authors were received by Swedish practical criticism in the period 1980-2005. After a quantitative overview of the U.S. authors and genres that were given attention in Swedish review media in this period, the article discusses discrepancies between the original U.S. and the Swedish recognition. One particularly interesting case is the very favorable reception of Paul Auster's work, which functioned as a confirmation of the postmodern breakthrough in the Swedish literary field. What the introduction of Auster shows is how Swedish critics function as intermediaries who represent what Pascale Casanova has identified as the ""national"" and the ""international"" poles of the literary field. Since Swedish criticism is in the peculiar position of representing a peripheral literary field that nevertheless controls a central consecrating instance, the Nobel Prize, it call be argued that the strategies of the most autonomous critics are always to some extent oriented in relation to the struggles between the world literary centers. The Swedish critic Aris Fioretos' introduction and intraduction of Paul Auster is, in that regard, a pertinent illustration of the cosmopolitan trajectory required for the fulfillment of the role of introduktor (""introducer""), a particularly significant function in afield that contains the Prize-awarding Academy.

  • Comparing literary worlds : An analysis of the spaces of fictional universes in the work of two US prose fiction debut cohorts, 1940 and 1955
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Poetics (Amsterdam. Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-422X .- 1872-7514. ; 33:5-6, s. 343-368
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a geometric data analysis (GDA) of the two “spaces of fictional universes” made up by the literary works of two cohorts of US prose fiction debut writers, 1940 and 1955. It is argued that the analysis reveals a common structure with significant variations that enable a comparison between two different states of a collective social imaginary, generated by 385 of the 560 authors included in the study. It is shown that the 1955 space is characterized by a greater contrast between agonistic and non-agonistic universes, and a firmer gendering of these oppositions. Other results include a confirmation of the generally accepted intuition that first novelists tend to reproduce features of their own social and geographical background in their works, but it is argued that different “site effects” enable a greater power to appropriate symbolically privileged spaces. The article concludes with a brief return to the individual authors, indicating the kind of research that the geometric data analysis makes possible.
