  • GIFT: Hybrid Museum Experiences through Gifting and Play
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Workshop on Cultural Informatics. ; , s. 31-40
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • he GIFT project develops new approaches to creating hybrid physi-cal-digital visitor experiences in museums. Through design exploration of two concepts focusing on gifting and playful appropriation, the project charts how museums can create a deeper and more meaningful experience by giving visitors the tools to tell their own stories. The project is highly cross-disciplinary com-bining HCI research, artist-led exploration, technology explorations, and experi-ence design in collaboration with museums. Furthermore, the project gathers 10 prominent museums from Europe and the US in an action research project that both serves to ground the prototypes and framework in the needs of museums, while also facilitating the museum sector's need to become 'digital-ready', under-standing and capitalising on digital technology. As the project has progressed through half of its duration, we report on initial findings and how these have shaped our direction of progress.

  • Health Promotion Can Postpone Frailty : Results from the RCT Elderly Persons in the Risk Zone
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Public Health Nursing. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0737-1209 .- 1525-1446. ; 33:4, s. 303-315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Very old persons (80+) are often described as "frail", implying that they are particularly vulnerable to adverse health outcomes. Elderly Persons in the Risk Zone was designed to determine whether a preventive home visit or multiprofessional senior group meetings could postpone deterioration in frailty if the intervention is carried out when the person is not so frail. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: The study was a RCT with follow-ups at 1 and 2 years. A total of 459 persons (80+), still living at home, were included. Participants were independent in activities of daily life and cognitively intact. MEASURES: Frailty was measured in two complementary ways, with the sum of eight frailty indicators and with the Mob-T Scale measuring tiredness in daily activities. RESULTS: Both interventions showed favorable effects in postponing the progression of frailty measured as tiredness in daily activities for up to 1 year. However, neither of the two interventions was effective in postponing frailty measured with the sum of frailty indicators. CONCLUSIONS: The results in this study show the potential of health promotion to older persons. The multiprofessional approach, including a broad spectrum of information and knowledge, might have been an important factor contributing to a more positive view of aging.

  • For whom is a health-promoting intervention effective? : Predictive factors for performing activities of daily living independently
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: BMC Geriatrics. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2318. ; 16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Health-promoting interventions tailored to support older persons to remain in their homes, so-called “ageing in place” is important for supporting or improving their health. The health-promoting programme “Elderly Persons in the Risk Zone,” (EPRZ) was set up for this purpose and has shown positive results for maintaining independence in activities of daily living for older persons 80 years and above at 1- and 2 year follow-ups. The aim of this study was to explore factors for maintaining independence in the EPRZ health-promoting programme. Methods: Total of 459 participants in the original trial was included in the analysis; 345 in the programme arm and 114 in the control arm. Thirteen variables, including demographic, health, and programme-specific indicators, were chosen as predictors for independence of activities of daily living. Logistic regression was performed separately for participants in the health promotion programme and in the control arm. Results: In the programme arm, being younger, living alone and self-rated lack of tiredness in performing mobility activities predicted a positive effect of independence in activities of daily living at 1-year follow-up (odds ratio [OR] 1.18, 1.73, 3.02) and 2-year, (OR 1.13, 2.01, 2.02). In the control arm, being less frail was the only predictor at 1-year follow up (OR 1.6 1.09, 2.4); no variables predicted the outcome at the 2-year follow-up. Conclusions: Older persons living alone - as a risk of ill health - should be especially recognized and offered an opportunity to participate in health-promoting programmes such as “Elderly Persons in the Risk Zone”. Further, screening for subjective frailty could form an advantageous guiding principle to target the right population when deciding to whom health-promoting intervention should be offered. Trial registration: The original clinical trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov. Identifier: NCT00877058 , April 6, 2009.

  • Bridging the online/offline divide : The example of digital gaming
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Computers in human behavior. - : Elsevier BV. - 0747-5632 .- 1873-7692. ; 53, s. 527-535
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of virtual worlds are often based on the dichotomous 'real world'/'virtual world', yet research has indicated that this division is far from unproblematic. The aim of this study is to examine empirically the link between online/offline using the example of social online gaming. The data consist of individual and group interviews with 33 adult garners. The results explore three themes sociability and design; group membership; norms and rules and show how on-and offline are inexorably linked through the social organizational demands of Internet gaming. Individuals ground online group membership in offline relations and shared characteristics, aiming to maximize game-play gains and support sociability. Gaming with 'people like us' facilitates creation of norms and expectations, which aids in producing stable social groups. Thus the boundary between online and offline becomes contingent on links between people. The study shows how important offline connections are for online interaction.

  • Considering Co-Players : Implications for research and design
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on the Foundations of Digital Games (FDG 2015). - : Society for the Advancement of the Science of Digital Games. - 9780991398249
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This empirical study explores the role of co-players in players’ motivations and experiences of gaming through relational sociological analyses of interview and survey data. The aim is to bring attention to the importance of divergent gaming partners, and to offer some implications for considering co-players in game research and design. Results explore three gaming situations: playing with family members, playing with friends and playing with strangers, and shows how differently these co-players impact on players’ experiences and motivations. Games as designed platforms have certain affordances for social behaviour that will vary for different constellations of individuals playing together. Moreover, the study shows how strong game structures facilitate and encourage play with strangers but simultaneously dissuade player agency and social incentive in play with friends and relations. From analysis of the data three design hypotheses concerning co-players and their impact on gaming are posed.

  • Cropland changes in times of conflict, reconstruction, and economic development in Iraqi Kurdistan
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of Human Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447. ; 45:1, s. 78-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The destruction of land and forced migration during the Anfal attacks against the Kurds in Iraq in the late 1980s has been reported to have severe consequences for agricultural development. A reconstruction program to aid people in returning to their lands was launched in 1991. To assess the agricultural situation in the Duhok governorate during the pre-Anfal (A), post-Anfal (B), reconstruction (C), and present (D) periods, we mapped winter crops by focusing on inter-annual variability in vegetation greenness, using satellite images. The results indicate a decrease in cultivated area between period A and B, and a small increase between period B and C. This supports reports of a decline in cultivated area related to the Anfal campaign, and indicates increased activity during the reconstruction program. Period D showed a potential recovery with a cropland area similar to period A.

  • Data and methods in the environment-migration nexus : A scale perspective
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Die Erde. - 0013-9998. ; 147:2, s. 139-152
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relationship between environment and migration has gained increased attention since the 1990s when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change projected climate change to become a major driver of human migration. Evaluations of this relationship include both quantitative and qualitative assessments. This review article introduces the concept of scale to environment-migration research as an important methodological issue for the reliability of conclusions drawn. The review of case studies shows that scale issues are highly present in environment-migration research but rarely discussed. Several case studies base their results on data at very coarse resolutions that have undergone strong modifications and generalizations. We argue that scale-related shortcomings must be considered in all stages of environment-migration research.
