• Disappearance of the N=14 shell gap in the carbon isotopic chain
• 2008
• Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 78:3
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The structure of C-17-20(6) nuclei was investigated by means of the in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy technique using fragmentation reactions of radioactive beams. Based on particle-gamma and particle-gamma gamma coincidence data, level schemes are constructed for the neutron-rich C17-20 nuclei. The systematics of the first excited 2(+) states in the carbon isotopes is extended for the first time to A = 20 showing that in contrast to the case of the oxygen isotopes, the N = 14 subshell closure disappears. Experimental results are compared with shell-model calculations. Agreement between them is found only if a reduced neutron-neutron effective interaction is used. Implications of this reduced interaction in some properties of weakly bound neutron-rich Carbon are discussed.

• Beyond drinking: differential effects of demographic and socioeconomic factors on alcohol-related adverse consequences across European countries
• 2008
• Ingår i: European addiction research. - : S. Karger AG. - 1421-9891 .- 1022-6877. ; 14:3, s. 150-160
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Background/Aims: Evidence underlines the importance of drinking patterns and individual characteristics in experiencing adverse alcohol-related consequences; however, little research has been conducted to explore who does and who does not experience consequences with similar drinking patterns. Using data from seven European countries, this study assesses the association between demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and six adverse consequences. Methods: Conditional logistic regression models were estimated, cases (experiencing a consequence) being matched to controls (not experiencing the consequence) by drinking patterns. Results: In general, protective effects with increasing age and being in a partnership were consistent. Gender effects were mixed, but mainly protective for women. Educational achievement and economic status showed consistent effects across countries, but different directions of effect across consequences. Consequences mostly associated with individual drinking pattern (injury, blackout, and loss of control over drinking) exhibited similar patterns of associations, but varying ones arose for consequences additionally influenced by societal reaction to drinking (guilt, role failure, and pressure to cut down drinking). Conclusion: Differences in strengths and directions of effects across consequences pointed to the possibility that the reporting of adverse consequences is not only influenced by alcohol consumption, but also by attributional processes related to demographic and socioeconomic statuses.

• Precision study of ground state capture in the 14N(p,γ)15O reaction
• 2008
• Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 78:2
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The rate of the hydrogen-burning carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle is controlled by the slowest process, 14N(p,γ)15O, which proceeds by capture to the ground and several excited states in O15. Previous extrapolations for the ground state contribution disagreed by a factor 2, corresponding to 15% uncertainty in the total astrophysical S factor. At the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) 400 kV accelerator placed deep underground in the Gran Sasso facility in Italy, a new experiment on ground state capture has been carried out at 317.8, 334.4, and 353.3 keV center-of-mass energy. Systematic corrections have been reduced considerably with respect to previous studies by using a Clover detector and by adopting a relative analysis. The previous discrepancy has been resolved, and ground state capture no longer dominates the uncertainty of the total S factor. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

• Lifetime of the isomeric O-2(+) state in Be-12
• 2007
• Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 654:3-4, s. 87-91
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Mean lifetime tau of the isomeric O-2(+) state in Be-12 has been determined by measuring decay spectra of delayed y-rays from stopped Be-12 2 nuclei produced by the projectile fragmentation of O-18 at 100 A MeV. A consistent value of tau = 331 +/- 12 ns was obtained from the time spectra of the E2 gamma decay to the 2(1)(+) state and the positron annihilation following the E0 decay to the ground state. Based on the observed branching ratio between the E2 and E0 decays, transition strengths of the two decay modes were deduced to be B(E2; O-2(+) -> 2(1)(+)) = 7.0 +/- 0.6 e(2) fm(4) and 2 1 1 (O-2(+) Sigma(i) e(i) r(i)(2) O-1(+)), = 0.87 +/- 0.03 e fM(2), respectively. • Ground state capture in 14N(p,γ)15O studied above the 259 keV resonance at LUNA
• 2008
• Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 35:1
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• We report on a new measurement of 14N(p,γ)15O for the ground state capture transition at Ep = 360, 380 and 400 keV, using the 400 kV LUNA accelerator. The true coincidence summing effect - the major source of error in the ground state capture determination - has been significantly reduced by using a Clover-type gamma detector. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.
