  • Accurate determination of the enhancement factor X for the nuclear Schiff moment in (TlF)-Tl-205 molecule based on the four-component relativistic coupled-cluster theory
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Molecular Physics. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0026-8976 .- 1362-3028. ; 118:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of parity (P) and time-reversal (T) symmetry violations using molecules are important and attractive because they are complementary to the high-energy tests of physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. The focus of our present work is to surpass the current accuracies of the quantity X, an enhancement factor for the nuclear Schiff moment (Q), and the nucleon electric dipole moments for the (TlF)-Tl-205 molecule. We obtain X = 6856 a.u. using a relativistic coupled-cluster singles and doubles and perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) approach. This new value of X improves the upper limits for Q and the proton EDM by about ten percent over the previous ones. [GRAPHICS] .

  • Oropharyngeal dysphagia in adults: Prevalence, professional practices, patient perspectives and treatment outcomes
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is defined as any disruption in the transportation of food/liquids safely and efficiently from the mouth, through the pharynx and into the esophagus. The underlying causes of OD in adults are numerous and the consequences may have devastating effects on a person’s health and quality of life. Overall aim: Contribute to a stronger evidence base for the identification and treatment of OD in adults. Results: Study I was a cultural adaptation and validation study resulting in the first valid and reliable dysphagia-specific health related quality of life questionnaire for the Norwegian population. Study II was a systematic review and meta-analyses that revealed considerable heterogeneity in the definition of OD and type and quality of outcome measures used to determine prevalence. Estimated pooled OD prevalence of 36.5%, 42.5% and 50.2% in the hospital, rehabilitation and nursing home settings, respectively. There were no eligible studies identified for OD prevalence in palliative care. In Study III survey results from 396 nurses, occupational therapists and speech- language pathologists in the Nordic countries showed notable professional role differences between countries, minimal education and practical training in OD, and limited use of evidence-based practice in screening, assessments and rehabilitative treatment for OD. Study IV was an exploratory randomised control study including 15 participants with Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis. Findings revealed no change in swallowing function following expiratory muscle strength training, as assessed by flexible endoscopy, despite significantly improved maximal expiratory pressure and positive results from patient-reported outcome measures. Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of OD in healthcare settings. Currently, education curriculums and use of existing evidence-based outcome measures and rehabilitative treatment in the management of adults with OD in the Nordic countries are minimal. The inclusion of patient-reported outcomes in the management of OD is needed along with continued research in the use of rehabilitative treatments of OD in people with Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis.

  • Chemically modified cellulose micro- and nanofibrils as paper-strength additives
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cellulose. - : Springer Netherlands. - 0969-0239 .- 1572-882X. ; 24:9, s. 3883-3899
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chemically modified cellulose micro- and nanofibrils were successfully used as paper strength additives. Three different kinds of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were studied: carboxymethylated CNFs, periodate-oxidised carboxymethylated CNFs and dopamine-grafted carboxymethylated CNFs, all prepared from bleached chemical fibres of dissolving grade, and one microfibrillated cellulose from unbleached kraft fibres. In addition to mechanical characterization of the final paper sheets the fibril retention, sheet density and sheet morphology were also studied as a function of addition of the four different cellulose fibrils. In general, the cellulose fibrils, when used as additives, significantly increased the tensile strength, Young’s modulus and strain-at-break of the paper sheets. The effects of the different fibrils on these properties were compared and evaluated and used to analyse the underlying mechanisms behind the strengthening effect. The strength-enhancing effect was most pronounced for the periodate-oxidised CNFs when they were added together with polyvinyl amine (PVAm) or poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (pDADMAC). The addition of periodate-oxidised CNFs, with pDADMAC as retention aid, resulted in a 37% increase in tensile strength at a 2 wt% addition and an 89% increase at a 15 wt% addition (from 67 to 92 and 125 kNm/kg, respectively) compared to a reference with only pDADMAC. Wet-strong sheets with a wet tensile index of 30 kNm/kg were also obtained when periodate-oxidised CNFs and PVAm were combined. This significant increase in wet strength is suggested to be the result of a formation of cross-links between the aldehyde groups, introduced by the periodate oxidation, and hydroxyl groups on the lignocellulosic fibres and the primary amines of PVAm. Even though less significant, there was also an increase in wet tensile strength when pDADMAC was used together with periodate-oxidised fibrils which shows that the aldehyde groups are able to increase the wet strength without the presence of the primary amines of the PVAm. As an alternative method to strengthen the fibre network, carboxymethylated CNFs grafted with dopamine, by an ethyl dimethylaminopropyl carbodiimide coupling, were used as a strength additive. When used as an additive, these CNFs showed a strong propensity to form films on and around the fibres and significantly increased the mechanical properties of the sheets. Their addition resulted in an increase in the Young´s modulus by 41%, from 5.1 to 7.2 GPa, and an increase in the tensile strength index of 98% (from 53 to 105 kNm/kg) with 5 wt% retained dopamine-grafted CNFs.

  • Motivation, Gender, and Possible Selves
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Language learning. - : Wiley. - 0023-8333 .- 1467-9922. ; 63:2, s. 271-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the consistency with which gender differences have been found in second language motivation, little systematic research has taken place on motivation and gender to date. Permeating self-concept development, gender impacts not only current selves but also future-oriented possible selves. In construing possible selves, females tend to emphasize interdependence, meaning they invest more in interpersonal relationships and self-other interaction. Based on instruments measuring ideal language-speaking/using selves and an interdependent self-construal in a sample of 140 female and 129 male adolescents enrolled in the final year of secondary education in Sweden, and using confirmatory factor analysis, support was found for the hypothesis that gender-related variance on a measure of the ideal language-speaking/using self could be accounted for by an interdependent self-construal. In discussing the results, further avenues for exploring the impact of gender on possible selves using more contextually sensitive research designs are presented. © 2013 Language Learning Research Club, University of Michigan.
