  • Self Shadows and Cast Shadows in Estimating illumination distribution
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper compares two methods for estimating illumination distributions from shadows: methods using self shadows and cast shadows. The cast shadow method provides an effective framework for recovering illuminations in a real scene utilizing variations of image brightnesses inside shadows cast by an occluding object of known shape. The shadow surface is typically the same plane on which the object is placed. A new self shadow method is proposed in this paper in which the shadow surface is on the occluding object itself. We show that it works even for lighting environments where the cast shadow method fails while clarifying the stability issues related to sampling resolution, and the selection of lighting model. We also present an automatic framework for estimation of near lighting by a depth identification, as well as the directional analysis of the illumination distribution, which was not addressed in the cast shadow method. We prove the effectiveness of our new method with experiments using real scenes.

  • The two-pore domain potassium channel KCNK5 : induction by estrogen receptor alpha and role in proliferation of breast cancer cells.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Molecular Endocrinology. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0888-8809 .- 1944-9917. ; 25:8, s. 1326-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of many human breast tumors requires the proliferative effect of estrogen acting via the estrogen receptor α (ERα). ERα signaling is therefore a clinically important target for breast cancer prevention and therapeutics. Although extensively studied, the mechanism by which ERα promotes proliferation remains to be fully established. We observed an up-regulation of transcript encoding the pH-sensitive two-pore domain potassium channel KCNK5 in a screen for genes stimulated by 17β-estradiol (E2) in the ERα(+) breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and T47D. KCNK5 mRNA increased starting 1 h after the onset of E2 treatment, and protein levels followed after 12 h. Estrogen-responsive elements are found in the enhancer region of KCNK5, and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays revealed binding of ERα to the KCNK5 enhancer in E2-treated MCF-7 cells. Cells treated with E2 also showed increases in the amplitude of pH-sensitive potassium currents, as assessed by whole-cell recordings. These currents are blocked by clofilium. Although confocal microscopy suggested that most of the channels are located in intracellular compartments, the increase in macroscopic currents suggests that E2 treatment increases the number of active channels at the cell surface. Application of small interfering RNA specific for KCNK5 decreased pH-sensitive potassium currents and also reduced the estrogen-induced proliferation of T47D cells. We conclude that E2 induces the expression of KCNK5 via ERα(+) in breast cancer cells, and this channel plays a role in regulating proliferation in these cell lines. KCNK5 may therefore represent a useful target for treatment, for example, of tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer.

  • Comparison of UV-curable materials for high-resolution polymer nanoimprint stamps
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Micro and Nano Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 2590-0072. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a systematic comparison of four resins for nanoimprint intermediate polymer stamps, the standard IPS material, OrmoStamp and two new polymers GMN-PS90 (foil) and GMN-PS40 (liquid). The new polymers are based on acrylated silane and offer sufficiently high Young’s modulus and low shrinkage to provide good me chanical stability during the imprint process of well-separated structures. No anti-sticking treatment requires for those new polymers and they can be used at room temperature, which results in better stability of the nano imprint process. The nanoimprint experiments using four resins showed a superior performance of the GMNPS90 material in both single-layer and double-layer imprint process with resolution after lift-off about 30 nm.

  • Developing Neck Circumference Growth Reference Charts for Pakistani Children and Adolescents Using the Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS) and Quantile Regression Method
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Public Health Nutrition. - : Cambridge University Press. - 1368-9800 .- 1475-2727. ; 24:17, s. 5641-5649
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Neck circumference (NC) is currently used as an embryonic marker of obesity and its associated risks. But its use in clinical evaluations and other epidemiological purposes requires sex and age-specific standardized cut-offs which are still scarce for the Pakistani pediatric population. We therefore developed sex and age-specific growth reference charts for NC for Pakistani children and adolescents aged 2-18 years.Design: Cross-sectional multi-ethnic anthropometric survey (MEAS) study.Setting: Multan, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad.Participants: The dataset of 10,668 healthy Pakistani children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years collected in MEAS were used. Information related to age, sex and NC were taken as study variables. The lambda-mu-sigma (LMS) and quantile regression (QR) methods were applied to develop growth reference charts for NC.Results: The 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th and 95th smoothed percentile values of NC were presented. The centile values showed that neck size increased with age in both boys and girls. During 8 and 14 years of age, girls were found to have larger NC than boys. A comparison of NC median (50th) percentile values with references from Iranian and Turkish populations reveals substantially lower NC percentiles in Pakistani children and adolescents compared to their peers in the reference population. Conclusion: The comparative results suggest that the uses of NC references of developed countries are inadequate for Pakistani children. A small variability between empirical centiles and centiles obtained by QR procedure recommends that growth charts should be constructed by QR as an alternative method.

  • Comorbidities in patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis versus the general population
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rheumatology. - : The Journal of Rheumatology. - 0315-162X .- 1499-2752. ; 43:8, s. 1553-1558
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. To evaluate the consultation rates of selected comorbidities in patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) compared with the general population in southern Sweden. Methods. We used data from a population-based cohort of patients with AAV diagnosed between 1998 and 2010 in Southern Sweden (701,000 inhabitants). For each patient we identified 4 reference subjects randomly sampled from the general population and matched for year of birth, sex, area of residence, and index year. Using the population-based Skåne Healthcare Register, we identified relevant diagnostic codes, registered between 1998 and 2011, for selected comorbidities assigned after the date of diagnosis of AAV or the index date for the reference subjects. We calculated rate ratios for comorbidities (AAV:reference subjects). Results. There were 186 patients with AAV (95 women, mean age 64.5 yrs) and 744 reference persons included in the analysis. The highest rate ratios (AAV:reference) were obtained for osteoporosis (4.6, 95% CI 3.0-7.0), followed by venous thromboembolism (4.0, 95% CI 1.9-8.3), thyroid diseases (2.1, 95% CI 1.3-3.3), and diabetes mellitus (2.0, 95% CI 1.3-2.9). For ischemic heart disease, the rate ratio of 1.5 (95% CI 1.0-2.3) did not reach statistical significance. No statistically significant differences were found for cerebrovascular accidents. Conclusion. AAV is associated with increased consultation rates of several comorbidities including osteoporosis and thromboembolic and endocrine disorders. Comorbid conditions should be taken into consideration when planning and providing care for patients with AAV.

  • Environmental benefits and biomass production from riparian buffers and windbreaks in Europe
  • 2021
  • Annan publikationabstract
    • Three scenarios of large-scale deployment for riparian buffers and windbreaks, across over 81,000 landscapes in Europe, with quantified corresponding areas, biomass output, and environmental benefits.Abstract:Within the scope of the new Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union, in coherence with other EU policies, new incentives are developed for farmers to deploy practices that are beneficial for climate, water, soil, air, and biodiversity. Such practices include establishment of multifunctional biomass production systems, designed to reduce environmental impacts while providing biomass for food, feed, bioenergy, and other biobased products. Here, we model three scenarios of large-scale deployment for two such systems, riparian buffers and windbreaks, across over 81,000 landscapes in Europe, and quantify the corresponding areas, biomass output, and environmental benefits. The results show that these systems can effectively reduce nitrogen emissions to water and soil loss by wind erosion, while simultaneously providing substantial environmental co-benefits, having limited negative effects on current agricultural production. This kind of beneficial land-use change using strategic perennialization is important for meeting environmental objectives while advancing towards a sustainable bioeconomy.
