  • Thoracic epidural anesthesia does not influence the occurrence of postoperative sustained atrial fibrillation
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Annals of Thoracic Surgery. - 0003-4975 .- 1552-6259. ; 72:1, s. 65-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. To evaluate whether thoracic epidural anesthesia (TEA) can reduce the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).Methods. Forty-one patients undergoing CABG were treated with TEA intraoperatively and postoperatively. Another 80 patients served as the control group. The sympathetic and parasympathetic activities were evaluated by analysis of neuropeptides, catecholamines and heart rate variability (HRV), preoperatively and postoperatively.Results. Postoperative AF occurred in 31.7% of the TEA-treated patients and in 36.3% of the untreated patients (p = 0.77). TEA significantly suppressed sympathetic activity, as indicated by a less pronounced increase of norepinephrine and epinephrine (p = 0.03, p = 0.02) and a significant decrease of neuropeptide Y (p = 0.01) postoperatively in TEA-treated patients compared to untreated patients. The HRV variable expressing sympathetic activity was significantly lower and the postoperative increase in heart rate was significantly less in the TEA group than in the control group after surgery (p = 0.01, p < 0.001). Among patients developing AF, the maximal number of supraventricular premature beats per minute increased significantly in untreated patients postoperatively but remained unchanged in TEA-treated patients (p = 0.004 versus p = 0.86).Conclusions. TEA has no effect on the incidence of postoperative sustained AF, despite a significant reduction in sympathetic activity.

  • Electrical properties of the TiSi2-Si transition region in contacts : The influence of an interposed layer of Nb
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 90:5, s. 2380-2388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of an interposed ultrathin Nb layer between Ti and Si on the silicide formation and the electrical contact between the silicide formed and the Si substrate is investigated. The presence of the Nb interlayer results in the formation of ternary alloy (Nb,Ti)Si-2 in the C40 crystallographic structure adjacent to the Si substrate. Depending on the nature of the Si substrates and/or the amount of the initial Nb, the interfacial C40 (Nb,Ti)Si-2 leads, in turn, to either epitaxial growth of a highly faulted metastable C40 TiSi2 or formation of the desired C54 TiSi2 at a lower temperature than needed for it to form in reference samples with Ti deposited directly on Si. On p-type substrates doped to various concentrations, the Nb also leads to a considerably lower specific contact resistivity than that obtained in the reference samples: a twofold to fourfold reduction in the contact resistivity is found using cross-bridge Kelvin structures in combination with two-dimensional numerical simulation. As C40 (Nb,Ti)Si-2 forms at the interface when an interfacial Nb is present, the interface characterized is likely to represent the one between (Nb,Ti)Si-2 and Si. For the reference samples, the interface studied is between TiSi2 and Si.

  • Systematic notes on Asian birds 32: The type locality of Hirundo daurica Laxmann, 1769
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Zoologische Verhandelingen Leiden. - 0024-1652. ; 340, s. 205-206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The restricted type locality suggested by Brooke (1974) for Hirundo daurica Laxmann, 1769 was apparently made without a translation of the original Swedish description. With this in hand we find it necessary to correct that restriction and move the type locality some 2500 km west.

  • Variation in the position and orientation of the elbow flexion axis
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. - : British Editorial Society of Bone and Joint Surgery. - 0301-620X .- 2044-5377. ; 85B:4, s. 538-544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analysed the axis of movement in the normal elbow during flexion in vivo using radiostereometric analysis (RSA). The results show an intraindividual variation in the inclination of the axis ranging from 2.1 degrees to 14.3 degrees in the frontal and from 1.6 degrees to 9.8 degrees in the horizontal plane analysed at 30 degrees increments. The inclination of the mean axis of rotation varied within a range of 12.7 degrees in the frontal and 4.6 degrees in the horizontal plane. In both planes, the mean axes were located close to a line joining the centres of the trochlea and capitellum. The intra- and interindividual variations of the axes of flexion of the elbow were greater than previously reported. These factors should be considered in the development of elbow prostheses.

  • A Gondwanan origin of passerine birds supported by DNA sequences of the endemic New Zealand wrens.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Biological Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 0962-8452 .- 1471-2954. ; 269:1488, s. 235-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zoogeographic, palaeontological and biochemical data support a Southern Hemisphere origin for passerine birds, while accumulating molecular data suggest that most extant avian orders originated in the mid-Late Cretaceous. We obtained DNA sequence data from the nuclear c-myc and RAG-1 genes of the major passerine groups and here we demonstrate that the endemic New Zealand wrens (Acanthisittidae) are the sister taxon to all other extant passerines, supporting a Gondwanan origin and early radiation of passerines. We propose that (i) the acanthisittids were isolated when New Zealand separated from Gondwana (ca. 82-85 Myr ago), (ii) suboscines, in turn, were derived from an ancestral lineage that inhabited western Gondwana, and (iii) the ancestors of the oscines (songbirds) were subsequently isolated by the separation of Australia from Antarctica. The later spread of passerines into the Northern Hemisphere reflects the northward migration of these former Gondwanan elements.

  • Evolution, biogeography, and patterns of diversification in passerine birds
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Avian Biology. - 0908-8857 .- 1600-048X. ; 34:1, s. 3-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper summarizes and discusses the many new insights into passerine evolution gained from an increased general interest in avian evolution among biologists, and particularly from the extensive use of DNA sequence data in phylogenetic reconstruction. The sister group relationship between the New Zealand rifleman and all other passerines, indicates the importance of the former southern supercontinent Gondwana in the earliest evolution of this group. Following the break-up of Gondwana, the ancestors of other major passerine groups became isolated in Australia (oscines), South America (New World suboscines), and possibly, the then connected Kerguelen Plateau/India/Madagascar tectonic plates (Old World suboscines). The oscines underwent a significant radiation in the Australo-Papuan region and only a few oscine lineages have spread further than to the nearby Southeast Asia. A remarkable exception is the ancestor to the vast Passerida radiation, which now comprises 35% of all bird species. This group obviously benefitted greatly from the increased diversity in plant seed size and morphology during the Tertiary. The lyrebirds (and possibly scrub-birds) constitute the sister group to all other oscines, which renders “Corvida” (sensu Sibley and Ahlquist 1990) paraphyletic. Sequence data suggests that Passerida, the other clade of oscines postulated based on the results of DNA–DNA hybridizations, is monophyletic, and that the rockfowl and rock-jumpers are the most basal members of this clade. The suboscines in the Old World (Eurylamides) and the New World (Tyrannides), respectively, are sister groups. A provisional, working classification of the passerines is presented based on the increased understanding of the major patterns of passerine evolution.
