  • Respiratory Health and Inflammatory Markers : Exposure to Cobalt in the Swedish Hard Metal Industry

    • OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between inhalable dust and cobalt and respiratory symptoms, lung function, exhaled nitric oxide in expired air and CC16 in the Swedish hard metal industry.METHODS: Personal sampling of inhalable dust and cobalt, medical examination including blood sampling was performed for 72 workers. Exposure-response relationships was determined using logistic, linear and mixed model analysis.RESULTS: The average inhalable dust and cobalt concentrations were 0.079 and 0.0017 mg/m, respectively. Statistically significant increased serum levels of CC16 were determined when the high and low cumulative exposures for cobalt were compared. Non-significant exposure-response relationships was observed between cross-shift inhalable dust or cobalt exposures and asthma, nose dripping and bronchitis.CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest an exposure-response relationship between inhalable cumulative cobalt exposure and CC16 levels in blood, which may reflect an injury or a reparation process in the lungs.

  • Personality- and size-related metabolic performance in invasive round goby (Neogobius melanostomus)

    • Differences between individuals in behavioral type (i.e. animal personality) are ecologically and evolutionarily important because they can have significant effects on fitness components such as growth and predation risk. In the present study we are used the invasive round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) from an established population in controlled experiments to examine the relationships among personality, metabolic performance, and growth rate (inferred as size-at-age). Boldness was measured as the time to return to normal behavior after a simulated predator attack, where fish with shorter freezing times were categorized as "bold" and fish with longer times were categorized as "shy." We show that bold fish have significantly higher standard metabolic rate (SMR) than their shy conspecifics, whereas there was no difference between personality types in their maximum metabolic rate (MMR) or aerobic scope (AS). Bold fish furthermore had a smaller size-at-age as compared to shy fish. Together this provides evidence of a metabolic underpinning of personality where the high-SMR bold fish require more resources to sustain basic life functions than their low-SMR shy conspecifics, indicating that bold round goby from established populations with high densities (and high competition for food) pay a price of reduced growth rate.

    • This study examines the impact of boldness on foraging competition of the highly invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus Pallas 1815. Individual risk tolerance, or boldness, was measured as the time to resume movement after a simulated predation strike. Fish that resumed movement faster were categorized as "bold," fish that took more time to resume movement were categorized as "shy" and those that fell in between these two categories were determined to have "intermediate" boldness. Competitive impacts of boldness in N. melanostomus were determined in a laboratory foraging experiment in which interspecific (juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua Linnaeus 1758) and intraspecific (intermediate N. melanostomus) individuals were exposed to either bold or shy N. melanostomus competitors. G. morhua consumed fewer prey when competing with bold N. melanostomus than when competing with shy N. melanostomus, whereas intermediately bold N. melanostomus foraging was not affected by competitor boldness. Bold and shy N. melanostomus consumed similar amounts of prey, and the number of interactions between paired fish did not vary depending on the personality of N. melanostomus individuals. Therefore, intraspecific foraging competition was not found to be personality dependent. This study provides evidence that individual differences in boldness can mediate competitive interactions in N. melanostomus; nonetheless, results also show that competition is also governed by other mechanisms that require further study.

  • Language that supports sustainable development: How to write about people in universal design policy

    • Universal Design (UD) is a design approach that recognises and anticipates diversity as a fundamental human condition. UD is also frequently referred to in relation to the social dimension of sustainable development. Central to both UD and sustainability is the way “everyone,” as the target of UD and sustainability goals, is understood. The purpose of the study is to identify how UD’s “everyone” is conceptualised in Swedish UD policy and to provide a set of recommendations for how to categorise people with regards to UD. A qualitative text analysis is used, which investigates semiotic modes in relation to the content, form, and social relations of texts. Based on the analysis, two challenges for UD policy are identified: (i) how to convey that UD is design for everyone, and (ii) how to move away from a thought pattern of norm and deviation. Seven recommendations for how to approach categorisations of people in UD policy are formulated. We argue that an adoption of UD has the potential to bring about sustainable living environments for all, if integrated with social, economic, environmental, and spatial dimensions of development, but that in order for this to succeed, careful attention needs to be paid to how UD is conceptualised, and a radically different way of categorising people is necessary.

  • Situation, Non-Categorisation, and Variation: Conveying Nonclusion Through Text and Image

    • Nonclusion is aligned with Universal Design and involves a critical approach to the categorisation of people. Specifically, nonclusion resists categorisations of bodies/roles and does not come with predefined or presupposed limits in terms of who something is meant for. While UD and nonclusion generally target Design and Architecture, this article explores how nonclusion can be conveyed through text and image in communication. The aim is to identify how the textual and visual presentation itself can make use of nonclusion, irrespective of the content that is to be conveyed. The material used is a video clip produced by the Swedish Agency for Participation. The video clip contains simple animation, subtitles, and a voice-over. The analysis identifies three components of nonclusion as relevant for the communication of nonclusion through text and image: 1) Situation encourages focus to be placed on contextual factors rather than individuals and their properties, 2) Non-Categorisation encourages a critical approach to categorisations of people, questioning unnecessary, routine, or harmful categorisations, and 3) Variation encourages the recognition of human variation, and the necessity of meeting human variation by variation in the designed and built environment. These three nonclusion components are of relevance to policy development in areas such as Social Sustainability, Disability Rights, Gender Equality, and Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.

  • The dis/ablement of bodies in semiotic landscapes – a citizen science approach

    • Much of our built environment is constructed to accommodate ‘normate’ (Garland-Thomson 1996; Hamraie 2017) bodies. This fact may remain invisible to normate users of public space, much as the ordering of human interaction through categorisation is often invisible (Bowker & Star 1999). Reading semiotic landscapes through the dis/abling (Campbell 1999) of bodies that (attempt to) move through them, in this talk we investigate how dis/ablised bodies and places are co-constituted and how hegemonic constructions of space can be noticed and problematised.Data was collected using a citizen science approach (e.g. Purschke 2017), whereby the public were invited to contribute data on experiences of categorisation in relation to exclusion and inclusion in public places. This was done using a purpose-designed app. Participants were encouraged to take and submit photos, write a comment about the photo and their experience, and to select one of three emotions, viz. happy, sad, or angry. To date, around 100 submissions have been collected.Data is analysed using visual multimodal analysis (Ledin and Machin 2018, expanded to include movement through, and presence in, space, as well as properties ascribed to the particular body acting in the place). This is also combined with a critical, multimodal discourse approach to dis/ability (cf. Grue 2015; Machin, Caldas-Coulthard & Milani 2016). The data includes examples of both ablement and disablement. Participants’ choices and descriptions of physical objects and places (signs, the placement of buttons to be pressed, contrast markings, etc.) reveal bodily requirements (linguistic competences, body height and dexterity, sight, etc.) and pinpoint the body in the landscape.The talk adds to the field of Linguistic Landscapes by considering the dis/ablement of users in semiotic settings of signs and the built environment.   • Digital consultations in Swedish primary health care: a qualitative study of physicians job control, demand and support

    • Background Digital consultation with primary care physicians via mobile telephone apps has been spreading rapidly in Sweden since 2014. Digital consultation allows remote working because physicians can work from home, outside their traditional primary care environment. Despite the spread of digital consultation in primary care, there is a lack of knowledge concerning how the new service affects physicians psychosocial work environment. Previous research has focused primarily on the patients point of view and the cost-effectiveness of digital consultation. Hence, there is a paucity of studies from the perspective of physicians, focusing on their psychosocial work environment. The aim of this study was to investigate primary care physicians perceived work demands, control over working processes, and social support when providing digital consultation to primary care patients. Methods The study has a qualitative design, using semi-structured interviews conducted in Sweden in 2019. We used a purposeful sampling strategy to achieve a heterogeneous sample of physicians who represented a broad spectrum of experiences and perceptions. The interviews were conducted by video meeting, telephone, or a personal meeting, depending on what suited the participant best. The interview questions were informed by the Job Demand-Control-Support (JDCS) model, which was also used as the framework to analyze the data by categorizing the physicians perceptions and experiences into the three categories of the model (Demand, Control, Support), in the deductive analysis of the data. Results Analysis of the data yielded 9 subcategories, which were mapped onto the 3 categories of the JDCS model. Overall, the participants saw numerous benefits with digital consultations, not only with regard to their own job situation but also for patients and the health care system in general even though they identified some shortcomings and risks with digital care. Conclusions This study has demonstrated that physicians perceive working with digital consultation as flexible with a high grade of autonomy and reasonable to low demands. According to the participants, digital consultation is not something you can work with full time if medical skills and abilities are to be maintained and developed.

  • Conformational Selection in Biocatalytic Plastic Degradation by PETase

    • Due to the steric effects imposed by bulky polymers, the formation of catalytically competent enzyme and substrate conformations is critical in the biodegradation of plastics. In poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), the backbone adopts different conformations, gauche and trans, coexisting to different extents in amorphous and crystalline regions. However, which conformation is susceptible to biodegradation and the extent of enzyme and substrate conformational changes required for expedient catalysis remain poorly understood. To overcome this obstacle, we utilized molecular dynamics simulations, docking, and enzyme engineering in concert with high-resolution microscopy imaging and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to demonstrate the importance of conformational selection in biocatalytic plastic hydrolysis. Our results demonstrate how single-amino acid substitutions in Ideonella sakaiensis PETase can alter its conformational landscape, significantly affecting the relative abundance of productive ground-state structures ready to bind discrete substrate conformers. We experimentally show how an enzyme binds to plastic and provide a model for key residues involved in the recognition of gauche and trans conformations supported by in silico simulations. We demonstrate how enzyme engineering can be used to create a trans-selective variant, resulting in higher activity when combined with an all-trans PET-derived oligomeric substrate, stemming from both increased accessibility and conformational preference. Our work cements the importance of matching enzyme and substrate conformations in plastic hydrolysis, and we show that also the noncanonical trans conformation in PET is conducive for degradation. Understanding the contribution of enzyme and substrate conformations to biocatalytic plastic degradation could facilitate the generation of designer enzymes with increased performance.
