  • Flow of Canadian Basin Deep Water in the Western Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Deep Sea Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0967-0637 .- 1879-0119. ; 57:4, s. 577-586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The LOMROG 2007 expedition targeted the previously unexplored southern part of the Lomonosov Ridge north of Greenland together with a section from the Morris Jesup Rise to Gakkel Ridge. The oceanographic data shows that Canadian Basin Deep Water (CBDW) passes the Lomonosov Ridge in the area of the Intra Basin close to the North Pole and then continues along the ridge towards Greenland and further along its northernmost continental slope. The CBDW is clearly evident as a salinity maximum and oxygen minimum at a depth of about 2000 m. The cross slope sections at the Amundsen Basin side of the Lomonosov Ridge and further south at the Morris Jesup Rise show a sharp frontal structure higher up in the water column between Makarov Basin water and Amundsen Basin water. The frontal structure continues upward into the Atlantic Water up to a depth of about 300 m. The observed water mass division at levels well above the ridge crest indicates a strong topographic steering of the flow and that different water masses tend to pass the ridge guided by ridge-crossing isobaths at local topographic heights and depressions. A rough scaling analysis shows that the extremely steep and sharply turning bathymetry of the Morris Jesup Rise may force the boundary current to separate and generate deep eddies.

  • Autoantibodies predate the onset of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in northern Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Arthritis Research & Therapy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1478-6362. ; 13:1, s. R30-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: Autoantibodies have a central role in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The presence of autoantibodies preceding disease onset by years has been reported both in patients with SLE and those with rheumatoid arthritis, suggesting a gradual development of these diseases. To identify autoantibodies in a Northern European population predating the onset of symptoms of SLE and their relationship to presenting symptoms.METHODS: The register of patients fulfilling the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria for SLE and with a given date for the onset of symptoms was co-analysed with the register of the Medical Biobank, Umea, Sweden. Thirty-eight patients were identified as having donated blood samples prior to symptom onset. A nested case-control study (1:4) was performed with 152 age- and sex-matched controls identified from within the Biobank register. Antibodies against anti- Sjogren's syndrome antigen A (Ro/SSA) (60 and 52 kDa), anti- Sjogren's syndrome antigen B (La/SSB), anti-Smith antibody (Sm), ribonucleoprotein (RNP), scleroderma-70 (Scl-70), anti- histidyl-tRNA synthetase antibody (Jo-1), double-stranded DNA (dsDNA); Centromere protein B and histones were analysed using the anti-nuclear antibody test II (ANA-II) Plus Test System (Athena Multi-Lyte(R)) on a Bio-Plex Array Reader (Luminex200). ANA were analysed using indirect immunofluorescence on Human Epidermal cells-2 (HEp2-cells) at a sample dilution of 1:100.RESULTS: Autoantibodies against nuclear antigens were detected 5.6 (+/- 4.7; mean +/- SD) years before the onset of symptoms and 8.7 (+/- 5.6) years before diagnosis in 63% of the individuals who subsequently developed SLE. The sensitivity (45.7%) was highest for ANA with a specificity of 95%, followed by anti-dsDNA and anti-Ro/SSA antibodies both with sensitivities of 20.0% at specificities of 98.7% and 97.4%, respectively. The odds ratio (OR) for anti-dsDNA predicting disease was 18.13 (CI 95%; 3.58-91.84), and for ANA 11.5 (CI 95%; 4.54-28.87). Anti-Ro/SSA antibodies appeared first, 6.6 (+/- 2.5) years prior to symptom onset. The mean number of autoantibodies in pre-diseased individuals was 1.4 and after disease onset 3.1 (P< 0.0005). The time predating disease was shorter, and the number of autoantibodies greater, in those individuals with serositis as a presenting symptom in comparison to those with arthritis and skin manifestations.CONCLUSIONS: Autoantibodies against nuclear antigens were detected in individuals developing SLE several years before the onset of symptoms and diagnosis. The most sensitive autoantibodies were ANA, Ro/SSA and dsDNA, with the highest predictive OR for anti-dsDNA antibodies. The first autoantibodies detected were anti-Ro/SSA.

  • Managing political crisis : an interactional approach to "image repair"
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Communication Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1363-254X .- 1478-0852. ; 16:3, s. 264-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to extend the image repair theory by focusing on the largely ignored context of the face-to-face communication. The paper offers an exploratory study of how image repair work is carried out in interviews with politicians in the context of press conferences.Design/methodology/approach - The paper combines theoretical reflections with two qualitative case studies of press conferences of Swedish politicians. These press conferences were held to manage the challenge posed to the politicians’ public image by the media criticism. The analytical frame employed in this study is Conversation Analysis (CA).Findings - The way journalists act during interviews and how they pose questions have noticeable consequences for the accused actor´s image repair work. Image repair strategies like "apologizing" and "mortification" during the speech section of a press conference tend to be more effective as they give the accused greater opportunities to take control of the interaction.Research limitations/implications - Due to the exploratory nature of this interactional approach and the fact that the analysis involves only two cases, the findings must be seen as provisional.Practical implications - The knowledge of how journalists construct question is of high relevance for crisis communication and image repair work, and therefore of high value of public relations practitioners.Originality/value - The interactional approach to image repair offers a new theoretical frame for the understanding of crisis management in interview situations. The approach especially highlights the importance of journalists' questions in image repair work.

  • Commissioning of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer with cosmic rays
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 70:3, s. 875-916
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider has collected several hundred million cosmic ray events during 2008 and 2009. These data were used to commission the Muon Spectrometer and to study the performance of the trigger and tracking chambers, their alignment, the detector control system, the data acquisition and the analysis programs. We present the performance in the relevant parameters that determine the quality of the muon measurement. We discuss the single element efficiency, resolution and noise rates, the calibration method of the detector response and of the alignment system, the track reconstruction efficiency and the momentum measurement. The results show that the detector is close to the design performance and that the Muon Spectrometer is ready to detect muons produced in high energy proton-proton collisions.

  • Studies of the performance of the ATLAS detector using cosmic-ray muons
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 71:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Muons from cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere provide a high-statistics source of particles that can be used to study the performance and calibration of the ATLAS detector. Cosmic-ray muons can penetrate to the cavern and deposit energy in all detector subsystems. Such events have played an important role in the commissioning of the detector since the start of the installation phase in 2005 and were particularly important for understanding the detector performance in the time prior to the arrival of the first LHC beams. Global cosmic-ray runs were undertaken in both 2008 and 2009 and these data have been used through to the early phases of collision data-taking as a tool for calibration, alignment and detector monitoring. These large datasets have also been used for detector performance studies, including investigations that rely on the combined performance of different subsystems. This paper presents the results of performance studies related to combined tracking, lepton identification and the reconstruction of jets and missing transverse energy. Results are compared to expectations based on a cosmic-ray event generator and a full simulation of the detector response.

  • The ATLAS Inner Detector commissioning and calibration
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 70:3, s. 787-821
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS Inner Detector is a composite tracking system consisting of silicon pixels, silicon strips and straw tubes in a 2 T magnetic field. Its installation was completed in August 2008 and the detector took part in data-taking with single LHC beams and cosmic rays. The initial detector operation, hardware commissioning and in-situ calibrations are described. Tracking performance has been measured with 7.6 million cosmic-ray events, collected using a tracking trigger and reconstructed with modular pattern-recognition and fitting software. The intrinsic hit efficiency and tracking trigger efficiencies are close to 100%. Lorentz angle measurements for both electrons and holes, specific energy-loss calibration and transition radiation turn-on measurements have been performed. Different alignment techniques have been used to reconstruct the detector geometry. After the initial alignment, a transverse impact parameter resolution of 22.1 +/- 0.9 mu m and a relative momentum resolution sigma (p) /p=(4.83 +/- 0.16)x10(-4) GeV(-1)xp (T) have been measured for high momentum tracks.

  • The ATLAS Simulation Infrastructure
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 70:3, s. 823-874
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The simulation software for the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider is being used for large-scale production of events on the LHC Computing Grid. This simulation requires many components, from the generators that simulate particle collisions, through packages simulating the response of the various detectors and triggers. All of these components come together under the ATLAS simulation infrastructure. In this paper, that infrastructure is discussed, including that supporting the detector description, interfacing the event generation, and combining the GEANT4 simulation of the response of the individual detectors. Also described are the tools allowing the software validation, performance testing, and the validation of the simulated output against known physics processes.

  • Activated MCTC mast cells infiltrate diseased lung areas in cystic fibrosis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1465-9921 .- 1465-993X. ; 12:139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Although mast cells are regarded as important regulators of inflammation and tissue remodelling, their role in cystic fibrosis (CF) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has remained less studied. This study investigates the densities and phenotypes of mast cell populations in multiple lung compartments from patients with CF, IPF and never smoking controls. Methods: Small airways, pulmonary vessels, and lung parenchyma were subjected to detailed immunohistochemical analyses using lungs from patients with CF (20 lung regions; 5 patients), IPF (21 regions; 7 patients) and controls (16 regions; 8 subjects). In each compartment the densities and distribution of MCT and MCTC mast cell populations were studied as well as the mast cell expression of IL-6 and TGF-beta. Results: In the alveolar parenchyma in lungs from patients with CF, MCTC numbers increased in areas showing cellular inflammation or fibrosis compared to controls. Apart from an altered balance between MCTC and MCT cells, mast cell in CF lungs showed elevated expression of IL-6. In CF, a decrease in total mast cell numbers was observed in small airways and pulmonary vessels. In patients with IPF, a significantly elevated MCTC density was present in fibrotic areas of the alveolar parenchyma with increased mast cell expression of TGF-beta. The total mast cell density was unchanged in small airways and decreased in pulmonary vessels in IPF. Both the density, as well as the percentage, of MCTC correlated positively with the degree of fibrosis. The increased density of MCTC, as well as MCTC expression of TGF-beta, correlated negatively with patient lung function. Conclusions: The present study reveals that altered mast cell populations, with increased numbers of MCTC in diseased alveolar parenchyma, represents a significant component of the histopathology in CF and IPF. The mast cell alterations correlated to the degree of tissue remodelling and to lung function parameters. Further investigations of mast cells in these diseases may open for new therapeutic strategies.
